I love him dearly but he doesn’t have the natural body fluidity and musical expressiveness like Jun-hwan, Dima and even Camden. Everybody complains how he doesn’t feel the music, which is totally not true. They just don’t get his style.
May I ask where do you get the impression that he has a strong marketing team? I know Alibaba from China is sponsoring him, but he seems to be universally underappreciated and undervalued here in the States. That seems to be the consensus of many fans here.
Personally, I think Vincent has as much or more fluidity and musicality than Jun-Hwa.
As for the rest, it is true that Vincent is indeed undervalued and underappreciated in the States. Here's my take as to why (apologies in advance for the very long post!):
After Vancouver 2010, USA had no men that were competitive on an international level for awhile. Max Aaron won the US title in 2013 with a quad or two, but fans were quick to jump on his lack of artistry. Jeremy Abbott won the 2014 title in fine style, but was a headcase internationally... and then he retired... but along comes perky Jason Brown, with oodles of talent but no quads and barely a triple axel, winning the title in 2015 (which should have gone to Adam Rippon). In the eyes of the US figure skating fans, he and Adam became America's sweethearts.
Along comes Nathan Chen... and fans didn't know what to do. Many didn't like this new young "quadster" with "no artistry" who posed a threat to "mature and expressive" Jason and Adam. Jason had to sit out 2016 and the title went to Adam (which was ridiculous, it clearly should have gone to Nathan or maybe even Max). Of course, Nathan got hurt just a few hours afterward in the exhibition, so he didn't go to worlds... giving smug fans the opportunity to surmise that Nathan had to undergo surgery because he was too ambitious with quads, he would probably end up in a wheelchair for life... too bad, so sad.
In 2017, Adam had to sit out (broken foot), while Nathan comes back with guns (quads) blazing and simply could not be denied any longer. He won the title with his record breaking 5-quad long program. In the meantime, here comes young Vincent Zhou, sporting a number of quads of his own, taking the silver at Nationals (quadless Jason was third), denied a spot on the world team, sent to Jr. Worlds instead, which he won.
But fans were okay with that, since Jason got to go to worlds, even if "who cares if he can do quads" Nathan had to go, too. No shade on Jason, he placed seventh at Worlds (the highest he could have possibly hoped for) and helped secure three spots for the next year. However...
Here comes the Olympic year and there are no less than five US men expected to vie for the Olympic team. Even die-hard Jason/Adam fans begrudgingly accepted that Nathan would be on the team, but assumed that it would be along with Jason and Adam. Well, as we know, Jason had a sucky season and still had no quad (and his triple axel weakened as well), Adam had a good season, but without the content to do any damage internationally, Max was hot and cold... while Vincent had an up and down season as well, but had real moments of brilliance. Many US figure skating fans had a hard enough time accepting Nathan, but they surely were not going to be on Vincent's side... if he were to make the Olympic team, then either Jason or Adam would not... and--OH NO!--that would be the end of figure skating as we know it!
Thank the skategods that the USFS got smart and sent Vincent to the Olympics, where he got a 6th place finish! (As we know, Adam got 10th and Jason certainly wouldn't have fared much better.)
And at this last Worlds, with Vincent's third place SP, the US had men in 1st and 3rd afterward! Wouldn't have happened without Vincent. I was sad to see him destruct in the free, but I have no doubt he will keep fighting and coming back strong.
Vincent has my support and, fingers crossed, he will soon have the support of most US figure skating fans as well!
