Vincent Zhou

Nice, touching words from Vincent about Denis! Vincent always strikes me as a thoughtful, introspective young guy.

I'm late but I was so happy to see Vincent will be going to SA and NHK. I know skating at home will mean a lot to him, and also that he has some dedicated fans in Japan who I'm sure is excited to see him there! Now I wish I still lived in Japan :hap85: but I'll brave the time differences for both (I'm in Europe lol) to watch on tv/online for him of course.

What happened to Denis has upset me so badly, and I saw that Vincent posted a thoughtful tribute <3.

Hi, Fool! Long time no see. Good to hear from you again. What European country are you in? Vincent's Japanese fans are all ecstatic that he will be at NHK and they are getting ready to shower him with his mascot, Domokun. Also hope Vincent will skate at 4CC.
Be sure to drop by when GP season starts. It gets lonely here and I need my fellow Vincent supporters to cheer with. :hap10:

Yes, it has been really upsetting with the passing of Denis. My eyes were hurting from all the tears . It's amazing that Vincent was just studying Denis' skating the night before the tragedy. He did mention that his focus this new season is to work on his artistry and who better to get inspiration from than D10.

OMG, just when I stopped crying, and saw this video clip of Denis practicing at the OG...:sad21:

Vincent is shown throughout the video, in Royal blue shirt, at the very beginning & around 0:30, on lower part of screen. Then ~1:31, he turns around from talking to Tammy & TomZ by the rink and looks at Denis. They skate together by the end....

:sad21: RIP, Denis! Your beautiful skating will live on!

^^ Thank you for this precious clip.

Not just skating, there are many things could learn from Denis as a person.
some account of Denis from figure skating fans, Denis even asked "would you wanna autography?" or "Wouldn't you like a selfie?" in those chaotic, nervous fan meet situation when fans forgot.
"He seems totally understand his self-worth and be totally content"

"always walking straight like a noble man even when dragging his luggage"

:2thumbs: Zenchio63 same to you! Sadly, it was Denis' passing (:sad21:) that brought me back to GS, because I do not trust any other outlets to be respectful or have user comments that are respectful, but I was only away because it's off season, once the season is back on I'll be back here frequently as well to support our wonder boy :o:

I'm in France btw! :agree2:

Rockerskating listed Vincent's Worlds SP as #31 of Top 50 Videos of 2017-18:

VIDEO: #31 of Rocker's Top 50 of 2017-18 - Vincent Zhou @govincentzhou turned his season around from a first few rocky months, finding a new gear at Worlds with this career-best short program (bonus: Zhou brings it in his Olympics FS)

Vincent Zhou USA - 2018 World Championships short program

"Having had some struggles in practice with a back injury that he was nursing, Zhou put that all aside and skated this program at its finest, both technically and artistically. Though his free skate was disappointing, he will always have that short program as a highlight of his season - and it proved to him that he can be competitive with the best in the world."

Thanks for that well written article and acknowledgment, Jackie! :agree:
Vincent is definitely under-appreciated and does not get enough kudos for his accomplishments.

There is also a bonus video of Vincent's OG FS on the webpage.

So well put, yyyskate! Denis had a quote from the Olympic Channel's GameBreakers video that always stuck out in my mind: "True art is to be able to appreciate yourself and to accept yourself." I think he was able to skate so expressively from his soul and be such a genuine person because he truly embraced that philosophy. Very few artists are able to reach that goal. And how ironic that he was carrying a luggage in this video and used it in his skating program.

I found some more pictures of Denis and Vincent together which I will post in a separate message.

From Vincent's Tweet about Denis: "I clearly recall the intensity in his eyes as he warmed up for the 2018 Olympics."

It must have happened in the above video clip as well as in these 2 photos from a Japanese fan:

The first pic showed Denis in the blue shirt and Vincent in the grey, and it actually seems like they are looking at each other. The second one is the warm up with Vincent in the blue and Denis in black. They were wearing the same shade of blue.

Another Japanese fan tweeted 3 pictures of Vincent and Denis getting ready to go out into the rink at OG.

Yay, Vincent was just announced on the 2018 Cast Sneak Peek list of An Evening with Champions.

2018 CAST SNEAK PEEK
Hosts: Paul Wylie & Emily Hughes
Courtney Hicks
Vincent Zhou
Kevin Shum
Haydenettes
Molly Malone
Sharita Taylor

SEPTEMBER 14 & 15, 2018 @ 7:30PM
BRIGHT-LANDRY HOCKEY CENTER at HARVARD UNIVERSITY

An Evening with Champions is a public charity non-profit committee dedicated to fighting cancer by raising money for The Jimmy Fund, the fundraising arm of Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Founded at Harvard University in 1970, An Evening with Champions presents an annual world-class figure skating exhibition at the Bright Hockey Center in Allston, Massachusetts. The exhibition features national and Olympic figure skaters, and has seen the talents of champions such as Yuna Kim, Michelle Kwan, Evan Lysacek, and more.

Ooh, that is good to know, thank you! I've been to this show several times but didn't go last year, mostly because I was out of town, but also the cast list wasn't nearly as impressive because I think most of the top skaters were focused on Olympic preparation. Knowing Vincent will be there is a big draw, I don't think I've seen him skate live before.

Tickets for an Evening with Champions are on sale now. The full cast has not been announced yet, but Vincent is still on the sneak peek list.

Vincent still hasn't announced his new programs but mentioned in his latest Instagram post:

Stay tuned. New things are coming 😉
Looking forward to seeing the more artistic side of him this season! :hap85:

Finally !!!! :hap36::hap36: SP announced, Exogenesis Symphony Pt, 3, by Lori Nichol.

!!!!

I love the opening pose. also Vincent is training at 7K sometimes. maybe he is getting all those body-movement training there. I can see the influence of Rohene Ward in this clips as well.

speaking of Exogenesis Symphony Pt 3.
the first skater come into mind would be Jeremy Abbot

here is Jeremy Abbot's Exogenesis at 2012 Nationals.

the palm touch ice moment is forever an immortal moment in figure skating history.

here is Vincent at 2012 US nationals FS winning his Novice national champ. He must have witnessed Jeremy's legendary performance there.

Vincent is wearing Chinese red costumes, reminds me of his Chinese styled red practice costumes at 2018 Nationals, also at San Jose. Maybe it is for good luck. maybe it is destiny

ETA, Novice Vincent is sooo cute, I wanna make some GIF.

another Exogenesis performance that has left a deep impression in my heart is Roman Sadovsky's Short program (also a SP:biggrin:) at 2016-17 season. I watch it in person, i remember, during the lutz combo jumping pass, music is started to swell, the lyrics started, and Roman's steps preparing for that jump pass also started to swell together with the music, although it is not something fancy, but my eyes started to tear... that is how and why it left the impression in my heart. simply musicality. #Romsky:love:

Vincent won his junior world champ with recording breaking FS that season in Taibei.

ETA, quote from Vincent insta "and I know we chose a big pair of shoes to fill":luv17:
fanny thing about Roman, when he chose the Exogenesis music as short that season, he does not know it has been used by Jeremy Abbot and it is one of Jeremy's signature piece. he just liked the music and something about he is Canadian not American.:biggrin: #Romsky

yet the most personal and emotional memory of Exogenesis and figure skating for me
is this Yuna Kim Exogenesis fan edit masterfully done by Sassybondgirl9
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w2Dh9zxjeAA
highly recommend to watch. In his insta, Vincent also linked the Japanese short movie production that used Exogenesis as background music. he must has deep feelings about this music. thus, I think Vincent will understand and appreciate this fan edit.

Thank you Vincent, I like it (music choice) very much.

Hope and eager to watch Vincent perform Exogenesis this season.

i already like the improvement in body language showed in Vincent's insta. the usage of head, neck, and shoulders, softer lines with more fluidity and deep edge, 3 dimensional whole body skating choreo (e.g. lean backwards, Rohene vibe).
some fan already pointed out the the inside spiral + outside spread eagle (which carved a S on ice is quite an innovative design in steps.
I really like the opening pose and choreo, I could already imagine Vincent would look like a prince charming on TV close-up with it. Also the opening dance, Vincent does it with more patience and better dance ability, which is better than chasing cars somewhat busy opening choreo.

my $0.00000000000002 suggestion about possible artistic direction of the SP, post this, because I know Vincent values fan input.
to distinguish from other masterful performances of this music (which is not a war house, but still used by some skaters, including signature performances).
for example, Jeremy's moment, Jeremy's look (the void, longing look into distance.) these has been used in many muse program not just Jeremy, but there is no need to reproduce these.
Vincent could focus on interpret the music using body language. whatever conflict, emotion, turmoil or even story telling(Vincent linked a short movie on insta). Or just the music note itself ( "such a beautiful, nuanced piece of music, where every note means something." quote Vincent:biggrin:). reflect it in body movement and musicality.

Muse SP is a good vehicle to showcase improved SS and dance ability.

ETA, okay I don't kr what I wrote:biggrin::biggrin: basically, I just wish Vincent make this music his own. :p

Wow, yyyskate! You get an A+ for that elaborate thesis on "Exogenesis" programs! :2thumbs:

Thanks for sharing your extensive knowledge and enthusiasm!! :gclap::luv17:

I am still commuting and won't be able to respond in detail till later tonight, but just wanted to say that Vincent will surely appreciate your input and support, and at the same time:

"Geesh, lady, you are putting too much pressure on him!

Just kidding! High five!
