Vincent Zhou

Yes, but the judges called his quads UR when both Tarah & Johnny can clearly see they were fine! Not fair!
Poor Vincent. He was so proud of having landed his jumps clean. But the judges are biased....

Vincent was robbed! Even Jackie Wong tweeted that his 4F looked good.

I think the judges want someone to rival Nathan, so they are harsh on him this time. But he has room and time to grow, I don't think they will be as hard on him by the time at the Worlds.
The main problem for me is those many moments when he seems a little awkward and out of balanced. I wish he can make them smooth. And obviously, the jumps need to be fixed, especially and landing.

I do have faith in Vincent and trust that he will improve with each skate. And I am so proud of him for coming back strong after US Int'l Classic! But the judges should use the same standard to judge each competitor, not just be extra harsh on a particular skater because they "want" him to improve (to be Nathan's rival, as you put it)! He may have to pull out all the planned quads in the FP, but risk being deducted again. Oh, Vincent! Please stay strong and have faith! Wishing you the best of luck in the FP tomorrow!

:(

This performance was so good to me, then the scores. WHAT. But to be honest, I would take this over his SP last year, it's like child versus adult this year. I can't wait for the Free and his progress in the season :o:

That was a harsh judging panel but the good news for Vincent is that he's still very capable of making the podium with a good free skate.

He was deducted 1 point for a late start!

I'm so confused about how Zhou's 4F was called under, the lutz and axel I saw on replay as iffy but the flip looked good in real time and in replay

Coach TomZ's response: Watch the video and notice the grade of execution from the judges using their naked eye is all in the positives for 54 technical points but then the technical panel using sub par video quality in terms of frames per second and only one camera angle reduces that to 39 points.

(Of course, there is always a "hater" lurking around proclaiming to be the expert and making his/her own analysis in the response).

Skate America SP Videos

Vincent ZHOU Skate America 2018 SP (No Commentary) with Kiss & Cry

SP video with NBC commentary

Pertinent comments:

5:00 Tarah: His technique needs to be fixed. The way his toepick hits the ice, it makes it very unclear.
5:09 Johnny: That was a perfectly clean 4F.
5:48 Call a spade a spade. Really get in there and look. When you are a technical specialist on the panel, deciding what these elements are worth and what they are, you have to take in the technique of the skater. And Vincent does land with a bit of a lazy foot, so it's easier for him to underrotate and hide it. But you can't always assume that it's underrotated just cause.

Bottom line: Each skater has such unique technique.

Michael Weiss's Commentary from Bridgestone Ice Desk

Friday Wrap - up / Bridgestone Ice Desk from 2018 Skate America

Commentary on Vincent's unfair scores and overly harsh judging begins around 9:40
Michael Weiss and the panel were completely shocked at the score.
Michael disagree with the 4F UR call. "This quad flip was huge!"

I have a problem with the consistency of it (the judging). As soon as somebody thinks that person is an underrotator and now all of a sudden they are just going to be all over him?

Nick McCarvel: Vincent is still only 5 points away from the podium. That is easily something he can make up tomorrow.
Michael: Hopefully, the technical specialists & controllers will make some adjustments (winks)

Vincent was unfairly targeted because the same "harsh" judging is not going to be used on all skaters. Johnny & Michael Weiss both think so!
But the most important aspect of this is that Vincent was proud of himself for overcoming a back injury, lack of training time during off season, not so good practice runs, and then come out and nailed the program! You can tell at the end (the same look he had on his face at US Nationals FP ending pose), how much it meant to him to perform well and skate a clean program.

He will show everybody what he is capable of with the FP! So proud of you, Vincent! Go show them that you cannot be pushed down! We are rooting for you this afternoon!

Vincent's Response to the Overly Harsh Judging

Vincent's message on his Instagram from last night:

Things happen that are out of my control all the time, and nothing exemplifies that more clearly than today. But I am proud of how I skated, and I truly enjoyed every second of my performance. And as always, today is the first day of the rest of my life. Good night everyone!

So proud of you, Vincent! That was a really mature and poignant response. You skated beautifully and gave a wonderful performance! Keep on shining and slay the FP this afternoon! We believe in your talents and ability! Don't let them push you down.

Lynn Rutherford tweet with picture of Vincent :

#SkateAmerica: @govincentzhou was pleased with his short program, but coaches Tammy Gamble & Tom Zakrajsek were not happy with under rotation calls on his quads. Gambill: "He did the quad Lutz right in front of us and the landing looked backwards to me. The flip was even better."

Vincent smiling and responding in the mature way. He is pleased with his performance (under his control), and doesn't want to focus on the overly harsh and unfair judging (out of his control).

Nick McCarvel's tweet about Vincent's SP:
Vincent Zhou delivers in his SP outstandingly. Had a bad back all summer, bum ankle here AND rough practices. Goes out and is next to flawless at #SkateAmerica.

Figure Skaters Online on Vincent's SP performance

Tweet: That was impressive! He seemed like he really connected well to that program. Way to go Vincent!

Website Review of Skate America Men's SP

It was unfortunate to see Vincent Zhou in sixth place after he delivered one of the strongest short programs that we have seen from him. Vincent showed tremendous growth in his new program and seemed to connect with the music, while still landing a quad lutz-triple toe combination, a quad flip and a triple axel. Sadly, all of his jumps were judged under-rotated so he did not receive the full point value. Regardless, his performance revealed artistic progress and consistency.

“That performance was a good reminder of why I still do the sport,” Vincent said. “And it just feels so good to put out a performance like that."

Vincent's bow from FP Practice. that his FP will go well and not be unfairly targeted with the harsh judging.

The look of "anguish" on Vincent's face at the end of the SP, as if he was signaling the deduction of his TES score from 54.49 to 39.52. :(

From Rockerskating:

Vincent Zhou USA
4Lz3T(ur), 2F, 4T(ur), 3A(ur)2T, 4Lz(ur), 3Lz, 3Lz1Eu3F
TES 72.87, PCS 76.50, FS 149.37, TOTAL 225.75 into 2nd - 3T, 4T, 3A, and 4Lz all called under

Vincent was robbed again! His FP was definitely stronger than Sergei's, even with the UR calls. And his PCS scores are always criminally underscored, even when delivering a great performance.

NBC Sports Gold live stream is really bad! Lots of glitches and static.

Just heard what Johnny said about ISU wanting to promote someone artistic like Matteo to be their poster child and pumping him up, while harshly judging someone with quad skills like Vincent. Thus the high scores. Absolutely unfair!

#JusticeForVincent

Does Vincent really have so much of an UR problem? And if he does, what about his technique needs to be changed to fix it? I'm really gutted that UR calls are holding him down because he's such a wonderful skater.
