Vincent Zhou

Nam, Michal & Jimmy have a good chance of scoring high. Praying for Vincent to get on the podium after his more successful FP performance. :pray:
 
Vincent finished in 4th place, less than 2 points away from winning the Bronze. His FS had the highest score, almost 10 points higher than Nam's. Hopefully, this will give him the confidence to carry forward and work for a good redemption performance at SA.
 
Fascinating competition. I know that many skaters had said the reduction in program length would make the FS more a test of endurance and it did seem like a lot of guys pooped out at the end. Perhaps the high elevation was also a factor, although I would have thought Vincent and Paniot had an advantage by training in Colorado Springs.
 
The altitude is really tough at this competition. I remember someone saying "Who Wants to Live Forever" is not a good piece to skate to here, since everyone is dying by the end of their free skate! :laugh2:...Great fight from Vincent to move up to 4th. This is a great program, and I especially liked the one section that had lots of loud drumming and he was doing his spins! Very cool. I have to watch it again. Some very nice touches in the choreography where movements happened right during a highlight of the music like a cymbal crash and such. He gets an A+ on this costume too. Very nice! The intensity really builds at the end of the program, and I think as his back feels better and he gets more and more accustomed to the program, the ending will have a lot of "pizazz"! ...Now regroup and get ready for Skate America!
 
Vincent was smiling in the Kiss & Cry so he felt better about this FP, even though his jumps are still not clean. Poor Micah, HK skater (Notre Dame/red ascot) & Nam were all having trouble breathing at the end. Too bad Vincent wasn't able to use the local training to his full advantage due to the recent injury and lack of training time. I thought he performed well despite the circumstances, though he got much lower overall scores than the SP (jumps aside).

I also love the music selection & his cool costume. He was too distracted with the stepped out jumps/fall to really perform 100% with the "Rising Sun" part, but that's to be expected. I am sure it will only get better and better.

^^^sheetz, I didn't watch Yaroslav Paniot closely at the end of his skate as I was either on Twitter or heating up something to eat, but I don't remember Vincent or him panting/out of breath at the end of their skates. So their local training really are a benefit. I didn't get to watch the earlier groups skate since my live stream was delayed. Did all of them had altitude breathing issues at the end of their programs? I just remember poor Micah Tang almost passing out.

It's a shame Vincent missed the podium by less than 2 points, but happy that Jimmy took the bronze. Sending Vincent good wishes to recuperate completely and continue to stabilize his jumps for Skate America! Looking forward to a "redemption" skate from him.
 
I haven't watched all the men but just going by the protocols Vincent won the FS mostly because he was one of the few skaters to attempt all 11 jumps without popping. Nam got off 9 jumps (popping 2) and Brezina only got off 8 (popping 1). Paniot attempted just 3 quads and 5 singles. I assume he was either completely exhausted after the third quad or he injured himself.

So I guess maybe Vincent's altitude training did do him some good. :laugh:
 
Wow, the FS is really good this season. I remember that I had a hard time finish watching his FS last season. This season's program seems like a more difficult one but it's done well and captures the essence of the music/movie. The costume also works altogether. They obviously will still have to polish it more here and there, but everything seems pretty good already. :) I especially enjoy those knee slide moments and Kung-fu poses.:dance:

Just checked on wiki and it says Vincent's FS is choreographed by Jeffery Buttle , the news source (The Mercury news) says that he was planning to have Buttle to do the FS for him.
But I am not 100% sure if it ended up that way.
and I don't think Vincent's and Boyang's programs are done by the same choreographer because the programs look very different to me, even without the costume comparison.
 
Vincent's FS was choreographed by Jeff Buttle. It was announced on his Instagram. I will have to rewatch Boyang's version to look for any similarities. There is NO WAY Vincent would ask Lori to choreograph a similar program for him, LOL

I just rewatched the opening pose of Boyang's version and it is completely different! Maybe the same music and arm poses are giving you that impression but the positioning, hand gestures, movements & feelings, etc. are totally not the same.

Jeffrey and Lori are completely different in their choreographic styles.

Are you watching his sp from this year because the choreo has changed a bit over the season. Vincent hand is slightly lower than Boyang's but it is more or less the same pose. I dont think the 2 programs are similar anyway.
 
Which version of Boyang's CTHD were you referring to? I watched the 4CC one. Regardless, there is only a limited style of movements a choreographer can use to complement the opening music. The distinctive style calls for those type of arm movements.

Ha, you beat me to the answer, lol. So glad you liked the program! Once Vincent stabilizes his jumps and become completely comfortable with the shorter time frame of the FS, the program will be a real showstopper. The second half of the program to "Rising Sun" can be sharper, with more attack & rhythm, to match the staccato of the drums. But he must first recuperate completely & get stronger to make those changes.


Even Jackie Wong thought Vincent's new programs are an improvement:

The 4cc one. I do think they look rather similar but like I said, the 2 programs are completely different apart from that.
