Vincent Zhou

Picture of Vincent with Alex, from Tatjana Flade Instagram (2nd picture). Good luck to both of our US men! I hope Vincent got enough sleep last night (Japan time).

The latest Skate Talk Online interview talked about Vincent, 2018 NHK Trophy Preview with PJ Kwong

Talking about podium contenders after Shoma
Tony: 3:24 And you have Vincent Zhou of the United States, ...he's one that's always kind of under the microscope as far as rotating his jumps
PJ: 3:44 - 4:05 , so my favorite performer is Vincent Zhou by a country mile. I love both of his programs. I think you're right. He's one of those skaters who seems to inspire scrutiny. As far as sheer watchability for the casual skating fan, I love what he's doing.
4:32 For me, Vincent Zhou is really the one I'm watching!

PJ also wrote about Vincent in this article:

Out of pure interest, I am anxious for a second look at American Vincent Zhou, whose beautiful programs are a highlight regardless, in my mind, of the under-rotations he is penalized for in his jumps. Will he have had time to improve his technique since Skate America? That is one of the questions on my mind.

I got up at 4am to watch the SP and thought Vincent popped both of his quads? Rockerskating:
https://twitter.com/rockerskating/status/1060854539891470336

Vincent Zhou USA
4Lz(ur?)3T(ur?), 3F, 3A(ur?)
TES 37.94, PCS 37.96, SP 75.90 into 2nd - looks like the Lz, T, and 3A might have been called

Wishing Vincent all the best in his FP. Hope he keeps all the quads clean.

Latest Ice Talk with Vincent and Satoko

The beginning has both Satoko and Vincent introducing themselves and their voices sounded really cute together "And you're listening to Ice Talk"
19:39 Nick spoke with Vincent on the phone a few days ago, asked about Vincent turning 18, training plans, goals for this season.
Interview starts 20:07 - 28:40
Being more responsible for his training
There are certain things that change in the way he approaches his training now
Lori & Jeff gave him more things to work on
Went back to California after Skate America to see his doctor for shoulder issue
Applying to colleges, enjoy spending time outdoors, will start driving soon
"There's a lot for me to look forward to in life outside skating."
29:03 Jackie talked about Vincent's jump technique

Nick: "I think Vincent can kind of come off as rather demure on the phone, rather understated. But he's a serious kid and he's seriously good at figure skating." Sigh, Vincent puts too much pressure on himself. I hope this new approach to training will help with his jump issues. Wishing him all the luck in college picks and continued improvement with his programs.

Going back to sleep now so I can get up on time for work.

Regardless of the jumps, I really LOOOVED this. His SP is beauuuuuutiful. I'm very excited to see him again tomorrow:love:

This SP is really an improvement in pcs to last season! But I have to admit I can't focus on it because while he did a perfectly fine 3F the rest of his jumps... even if they are not called UR (I think his 3T was not iirc?) they look borderline UR and not 'pleasing' to me. I'd rather see a 3Lz than his 4Lz< anyday. (I hope the system is working and the 3F +GOE got him more points than 4F< - GOE)

Good to hear that he is reducing his quads in the FS as well.

Vincent just skated his FS and he seems to have changed the jump layout a bit. Rockerskating:

Vincent Zhou USA
2Lz, 4S3T, 3A(ur?)2T, 3A, 4Lz(ur,ftdwn), 3F, 3Lz1Eu(ur)3S
TES 71.66, PCS 75.86, FS 147.52, TOTAL 223.42 into 1st

So Vincent missed the podium again by less than one and a half points this time. If only he didn't pop the first lutz. Sigh. But he fought hard and did a good job despite the pitfalls. Very proud of him.

Vincent's latest Instagram message, with all his Domokuns and gifts from the fans:

After dislocating my shoulder and not being able to skate all week before I came here to Japan, I struggled through my practices, every step on the ice feeling foreign and arduous. However, in the end, I emerged victorious--perhaps not over others, but over the immense difficulties I faced this week. Simply making it through my two programs was more than I could have thought to expect from myself during the flight here. I am so, so fortunate to compete, and the love I have received from my fans has been overwhelming. For that, thank you. Until next time, Japan ❤️~

Vincent did mention going back to California to visit his doctor for a shoulder issue during the Ice Talk interview but did not specify that it was a dislocated shoulder. He fought through despite the difficulties and performed his best. So proud of him.

Todd Eldredge wrote a nice comment: "Great fight this week Vincent! I know exactly how that feels and how much pain is involved with dislocating your shoulder. Take care of it and focus on that rehab so you can get back to feeling 100% again soon. Safe travels and best of luck for the rest of the season."

Vincent has been designated as the 2nd performer in the Gala Exhibition. It will be a thrill for him to skate with his childhood mascot. So happy for him and wishing him the best in recuperation and continued improvement of his jumps.

So proud of him.

Happy to see the Japanese fans showed him so much love too.

Zhou has wonderful programs this season, he just needs to rotate his jumps. I have understood something like that is not so easily fixed, it takes time and patience. Hopefully for next season this problem is over!!!

i agree with every word Euro sports boyz said about Vincent's performances and his improvement especially in the performance department. this season, first SA outing, second NHK.

Before, I support Vincent, mostly because of our shared ancestry, Chinese. I felt obliged and it feels like a habit/tradition, like supporting your family, your own blood. As for figure skating, I knew ofc Vincent is tremendously talented, jump genius, also is charming and has charisma. but seems lacking a bit in terms of innate artistic ability comparing to my fav skaters. Things that I value most in figure skating is musicality and sense of dance/movement as well as tech ability/quality.
My point is that, after watching Vincent's performances this season, I changed. I started to watch his actual programs on youtube over and over (like what I do intrinsically to my fav skaters, because their performances even through youtube is hypnotizing) Now I watch Vincent's performance, not out of obligation but simply i was genuinely attracted.

So when I heard Vincent's icetalk interview by Nick. where he mentioned he is applying for college on spare time. My heart surprisingly hurts for a sec. I always support my fav skaters pursuit the life of their own choice, be it skating or otherwise... But at that moment. I wanted to see more of Vincent, to watch more of his figure skating performances, perhaps, selfish, but the pain hidden in my heart is real.

So here leads to the fan feedbacks to Vincent's skating this season so far. Fans are as frustrated as Vincent (and team), Lots of things has been said, I won't repeat. But the most important point I wish to transfer. is the fear(like the pain in my heart) that Vincent's seemly absolute and endless passion to figure skating may be deflated after being knock down over and over again. Every time gave out one hundred percent and more, every time outperform his condition through sheer courage. yet, watching his score drop like snowball and missing the podium by mere point. Fans are scared to think how mentally strong (and How much love to figure skating) Vincent should have, to continue this journey... But, Fans REALLY hope to see Vincent at Beijing 2022

Kinda feeling hopeless at the moment, but wish Vincent can push through and believe in himself with inner peace and confidence, there are many reasons as for why, I won't list them all. For one, Vincent changed my opinion regarding artistic potential.

Fans will be with Vincent every step of his figure skating journey and witness how Vincent's figure skating journey will unfold, and I literally mean it. I have seen on Chinese social media that more and more fans (Chinese or not) came to the figure skating event to watch Vincent and his performances in person and Vincent is covered by fans (photography, videography, gifts, greetings, little fan interviews, etc. all sorts of fan support you can imaging) in more and more of his figure skating outings. :agree::luv17: , let alone all kinds of fan art, fan edit:luv17:

And Vincent is seriously getting more and more good looking by seconds.

Hopefully, someday, this will transfer to sponsorship and Judges will finally approve and blush like a little girl.:o:

ETA, since Vincent wrote a little thesis after every competition:biggrin:, thus as a fan I should at least write one as well. Like Idol Like Fan.

Thanks for that heartfelt message, yyyskate. If you look closely at the expressions on Tammy's and Tom's faces at the Kiss & Cry, it makes you wonder what they are thinking and what plans they have with Vincent. I hope he doesn't develop a complex of some kind, and get discouraged from being constantly picked on. It will take time to fix the jump technique and let's hope Vincent accepts that and doesn't over train and injure himself again.

I still have faith that he has his sights set on Beijing and will not give up easily despite all the pitfalls. But if his team can't help him, there may be a chance that he will consider alternative coaching. From his Ice Talk interview, he had a change of mindset and approach to training. He also grew up tremendously, not just physically but emotionally, after going through all the highs & lows. This is clearly evident in his skating and he will continue to evolve.

Cute pictures of Vincent from NHK

FS screenshots showing Vincent's nice hands. Those are "artist" hands according to Chinese palmistry/hand reading.

Take On Me shoulder shimmy, he's getting more natural!

The turn and look with a twinkle in his eyes. That would make a great advertisement shot.

Our boy Vincent has definitely grown up! Wishing him all the best in rehab/recuperation of his shoulder and hope he takes all the love and support he received from his Japanese fans to march on with his training.

@Zenchio63 great summary, thank you for all your hard work to keep Vincent's GS FF organized.

"I hope he doesn't develop a complex of some kind" you know what, this worry occurred to me for a split second lately as well. Hope it will never happen.

I don't know how to help Vincent as just a little fan.

but I will use one of my figure skating fan friend's light-hearted words to encourage “(Vincent) as an Asian kid, will not be that easy to know down:cool:”

Vincent you will always have your fans, friends, family and feline;) (I call it 4F (hope you can tame your quad flip jump asap, we know you love her)) to fall back on. That is a promise.:luv17:

oh, almost forget,
Vincent if you see this, please post some of your Banquet photos from NHK if you have any (if it is too much to ask, instastory would be fine:laugh:).
you may not know, but this is one of the best "thank you for your support" gift (second to "I love you too") to your fans.

To me Vincent's biggest problem is his constant injuries. Take it for what it's worth, but in the latest TSL Dave said Vincent is prone to training himself into the ground. I believe Vincent has the talent and drive to be a World medalist but he will get nowhere if he does not take care of his body. Does anyone know what his off ice training regimen consists of? I feel like all I hear about are his visits to his doctor.

I think Vincent is extremely determined and will not let these setbacks deter him from pursuing his dream.

But yeah, the injuries are worrying :(. Dave from TSL said that both Tom and Tammy would let him train himself into the ground.

He needs to be careful with his health if he wants to make it to Beijing 2022!
