Wakaba Higuchi

I can't believe I am only seeing this program now: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MJDDkTNDwEc

The beautiful, flawless running edges, the insane speed across the ice and the fluidity of movement kept reminding me of Yuna Kim's Sheherezade. That was an absolute masterpiece, and what a score - 145.3.

While this program isn't my favorite of hers, this performance was wonderful! Skating at home doesn't seem to be a problem, so I'm hoping for the same luck at the GPF :)

This was the performance that first sold me on Wakaba. All year she hadn't really put together a 100% clean program and this one was exactly that, 100% completed as intended. I love the moment where she does the arm pose right on the music! (it happens at 2:34).

Yeah!

Also, at her GP France 2016 debut, the commentators couldn't believe she was the youngest competitor there (15). Since she skated with as much maturity and even more than any given senior lady, and didn't even look tired after finishing her long program. They noted how all the elements in the 2nd half were executed just as effortlessly as in the first. I am just so amazed.

Fluff piece in the lead up to GPF

Wakababy says she she has friends who are athletes in other sports and that. she wants to stand out and not be forgotten. She is going into GPF not with the attitude of "will I make the podium?" but with "I will make the podium."

Aw, so cute! What was the game they were playing in the school gym? Also, she has a very mature quality to her speech, even though I can't tell what she's saying.

They were playing onigokko aka tag. She can run 50 meters in 7.1 sec. although I've seen 6.9 reported as well.

As for her speech, perhaps it's because she is from Tokyo where they speak standard Japanese as opposed to the Kansai girls who have to switch from their usual dialect to standard Japanese when giving interviews and sometimes have to stop themselves from switching back. On the other hand, Mao who speaks standard Japanese didn't really sound mature until she turned 20 (traditional adulthood in Japan).

Haha that sounds like something she would say. Always ambitious! I remember during Japanese Nationals she would always want to podium... and that's what she ended up doing!

She is the only Japanese skater I know who said out loud that that she wanted to beat Mao. And guess what...that's what she ended up doing 3 times without a loss! Not even Satoko can say that.

Which competitions were those? Two Nationals and a GP? To be fair Mao wasn't really in top shape in the 2016-2017 season (+ injuries), but man Wakaba is so gutsy! :)

Nationals 2015 & 2016 and TdF 2016. And yes I'd agree, it's a bit off as a comparison because Mao sadly struggled so much with injuries in those seasons. But I admire her guts to say it out loud too :)

2 nats and GP France. True Mao was in decline but you gotta like the talk the talk, walk the walk attitude.

Are there any good places to followe her practices for GPF? I don't think I've wanted a skater to win something this badly since 2014. :hap10:

Wearing my Bond watch strap to root for Wakabond. Kind of odd that I don't have a watch attached to it, but it's worn in the same spirit as a rally cap.;)

Events in Japan usually don't have public practices. Maybe some footage will show up though! (Who were you rooting for in 2014? :) )
