what do you make of Bird flu?

Eventually there will be pandemic influenza again. The problem is, we have no way of knowing when, or even if this particular strain of avian flu is the one that's going to be the pandemic strain. What we will really need is a rebuilding of the public health system in the US, which will cost far more than what has been allocated. If I were to see a strain of flu in a patient, who would get my call? what would their response be? and who is going to make sure that other first responders don't die from this?
After 20 years of decimating the public health infrastructure, we aren't prepared for any disaster, yet Bush is talking like we have a chance and 7 billion will fix it.
If we can exit this war, we have a much better chance of stopping the spread. Seeing our resources squandered gets so frustrating.

Hi bronxgirl, M.D. the GS infectiouus disease doctor. You haven't been here for a while. Nice to see your post.
Assuming the pandemic will arrive in a couple of years, then hopefully there will be vaccines. BTW, How effective will be oseltamivir phosphate, and zanamivor in treating avian flu, any solid data, any reasonable guesses??

If the head scientists think we truly need to take a vaccine for the avian flu, and nobody dies from the vaccination itself, then I'll get it. Otherwise, I'm not going to die worrying about it.:thumbsup:

My friend works in infectious diseases at the CDC. (Worked on the smallpox report back when that was the next big "We're all going to die!" thing.) She is not overly concerned. If she decides it's time to panic, I'll worry.
