What will 2010-11 bring for Caroline Zhang?

What are people going to do if you solicit, call the police?

No, the coach whose student was solicited would report you to the PSA, and like Robin Wagner, Sarah Hughes' coach, you could be suspended for unethical solicitation of a student for some period of time.

Post-Nationals thoughts?

With my non-expert eyes, I thought Caroline showed improvement although I did see a darn mule kick. She looked a bit faster and had some attack, and for the most part did not have that awful gloomy depressed look. Her spins were very good. She's a work in progress but at least I could see progress. I don't know how much time she has, though. This has to be a very lonely, costly struggle.

I thought Caroline lost some weight and was looking to be in better shape than during the Grand Prix. I was happy her pearl spin was back, though it looked more labored than when she was thinner. I think if she keeps improving, she can be a force next season.

What I don't know is whether she will get 2 GP assignments in the fall. If not, she will have to do Regionals or Sectionals. As for costs, she made some money from shows and her AT&T sponsorship in 2009-10, but I have no idea what her finances are.

I think best case scenario Caroline could maybe end up like Ashley Wagner. There's so much talent coming up through the ranks I don't expect her to be one of the top US ladies and go to Worlds or the Olympics between now and 2014, but if she works hard she can maybe be in the mix again. She has made some impressive improvements in a short period of time though.

I am going to remain positive and I hope Caroline does as well. I did see marked improvement although the mulekick did resurface. I think that was nerves/frustration causing that. This is going to be a long work in progress. Stay strong Caroline and kick some booty in the future!! :)

ITA with this. I wish Caroline the best of luck. It is not over for her if she continues her progress.

Caroline cannot end up like Ashley because Ashley has not ended up yet. There is always talent coming up through the ranks, but very little of it actually gets through. With all the young talent coming up, a 23 year old won the ladies' event and a 27 year old won the men's.

I also think I didn't like the performance of the choreography at all, it didn't feel fluid or beautiful. I hope she finds an LP for next season that she connect with and perform with some spark.

Well, for Caroline to get to Ashley's level , that would be like a 400% improvement. Mostly because Ashley has got so much fire, her skating is musical, has a lot of transitions and flourishes.

The jumps Caroline fell on/popped in her LP were the same ones she had some problems with in practice, so it's not totally shocking she had some issues, although her run-throughs have been generally cleaner. I was expecting something really awful after reading on all the boards how bad her LP was, and how much she gave up, etc. But actually I thought she looked much better than the rest of the season, and she didn't totally give up like everyone saying she was. Her last spin was gorgeous, and she attacked her last several jumping passes. I thought she and her coaches all had rather positive attitude, and recognized that it's going to take her some time to work through all her issues.

Among her improvements that I noticed: gorgeous 3F with no mule-kick or excessive twisting. Also slightly less mulekick/twisting on the lutz. Much better speed into the 3S (but I think her timing was a little off with this new entry, hence not being able to leverage that speed into height). Better spins (especially the layback) than on the GP's. Better speed in general. Great 3R combos. And her new LP dress is way nicer, much more flattering. Best of all, she seems to be in much better shape than in the fall. It's pretty impressive how much she slimmed down in just a couple of months at an age when girl athletes do all they can just not to gain weight. This takes determination and discipline, and shows me that she's serious about skating.

Actually, the most positive thing is that even with this disaster of a LP skate, USFSA seems to be sending a strong, supportive message. She got almost 10 points more than last year's LP at National's, when she only fell on a flip and stepped out of a lutz (and received only 83, which is outrageously low, if you think about it). This year, she fell on a lutz, fell on a salchow, singled the flip, substituted a 2A for a planned 3T, took out a bunch of choreography including most of her footwork sequence; not to mention the new CoP hurts a skater that used to get a lot of points for spins and spirals. And I saw that she got across-the-board +1 GOE for her 3F-2T combo, which she had been getting just 0 GOE all season on the GP's (well, it's a competent jump, but doesn't have any of those extra features like difficulty entry/exit, arm variation, or extra height/distance). I think this is the most generous US judges have been toward Caroline since she was 13 at National's as a junior. To me, she and her coaches didn't look like they were about to give up on her after she got her scores.

I actually feel much more positive about Caroline than I have all season. Few other skaters has been so hyped at 13-14, and so dumped at 15-16. From being touted as the future of US figure skating to relegated to the dustbins of history all before she was even old enough to get a driver's license! Think how wonderful a story it would be if she were to prove everyone wrong and come back to the top again. The wonderful recent outcomes of Sarah Meier, Alissa Czisny, and Ryan Bradley give me hope that she still has plenty of time to bring her skating career to new heights (I mean, think about how many times each of those three have been written off until they found their redemption in their mid to late 20's).

Go Caroline!

I think it's a serious problem when you gut the choreography. Even if all the jumps are executed perfectly, you end up in the same situation as Maé Bérénice Méité: great tech, but a placement very far away from the top because the PCS is abysmal. I know that Caroline is very focused on the grueling process of relearning her jumps, but I hope that she picks up the performance and the choreography aspects of skating again. (Just look at what good PCS scores do for Carolina Kostner; she can mess up her jumps without getting buried in the standings.)

^^ Didn't Caroline score 88 for her FS at nationals last year? I'm pretty sure she did, so the difference isn't that big, 3-4 points. I agree it's still encouraging though.

Zhang is only 17 (?) so there's plenty of time. The only X-factor is injury of course.

And that is without the spiral sequence and extra spin, which were big point getters for Caroline. This same program a year ago probably would've been like 5 points higher.

I thought she looked much improved. She had more speed, her flip has improved and her spins were better than this past fall. I thought it was wise of her to do a 3lp^2ax, looked better than her solo 2ax. Her lutz still needs to be redone, but the improvement on her flip really impressed me. I don't know that she'll ever be the top tier skater many expected, but I think the future of her career looks better than it did a year ago.

I just watched her SP for the first time on youtube -- I thought that her speed/musicality was much improved and the ice coverage on her 3R-2R combo was way more than in the past. Right now, I am going to have to be content with videos of her performances when she was 13/14 -- but I think this really shows that she *can* make major improvements.
GOOO Caroline! :)

By the way, if anyone is interested, check out what search terms Google Instant suggests once you type Caroline Zhang's name into the search box. Google's suggested searches are not pretty, so please do not bring them up in this thread. (The moderators, I am sure, want to keep things polite and civil. I would actually understand if this message ends up getting deleted.)
