What will 2010-11 bring for Caroline Zhang?

interesting. I hope she did make a coaching change, but will wait for the official announcement until I get too happy.

I've been hearing from various reliable sources that Caroline Zhang is skating primarily in Riverside, California these days. Tammy Gambill coaches there. (Please consider this unofficial hearsay info until it is confirmed publically.)

Can someone please tell me a little bit about Tammy Gambill. Her name sounds familiar to me, but I do not really know who she is. Are there other top skater she worked with before? Or any talent she trained?

Well she coaches Lindsay Davis and used to coach Ellie Kawamura and Amanda Dobbs. That's why I said mostly with younger kids. Some of her students have had moderate success on the junior national and international stage, but I don't believe she's ever coached a student who has really made it on the senior international level (at least not yet).

I think the international judges found Caroline more impressive than the other two at 4CC because she skated better than the other two, and the international judges found no reason to hold Czisny and Flatt up like the US judges did.

That's what I thought. Alissa was held up at '09 Nationals, and should have placed lower than Rachael and Caroline. As for which of them should have won, I don't think anyone would have cried "wuzrobbed" if either Rachael or Caroline won.

As for this coaching change, remember Caroline has 2 coaches now; Ms. Li and Ms. Nicole. We don't know which, if either, was replaced. Google Maps tells the drive between Brea and Riverside is 40 minutes; 70 with traffic.

Normally she trains in artesia and lakewood though, neither of which are that much closer than riverside, about 30 minutes without traffic, 45 with.

I'm sorry but cute little Caroline is not going to be around a long time. Haven't read this whole thread but with her jump issues and mollasses speed, I wonder why so much interest in her when Mirai, Rachael and Ashley are better skaters. She does not have it, IMO.

It's because she had an amazing junior year when she won everything by huge margins (except Nats where Mirai beat her). She was truly dominant. But I agree with you. She hasn't really progressed. The flaws that were easy to overlook when she was tiny and 14 loom large now that she's tall and 17 (?). I wish her the best but I'm not optimistic. I'd be delighted to be proved wrong, though.

Who is Ms. Nicole? If you mean Lori Nichol, she is her choreographer who is based in Toronto.

Ooops, not only is my spelling bad, but I got the wrong coach. I meant to write Sondra Holmes. In her blog from Dec 9, Caroline writes, "In the afternoon, after lunch, I have a lesson with my other coach, Sondra Holmes."
It will be interesting to see which, if either, coach was replaced.

Caroline has worked with Sondra Holmes for years. Many of Tammy Gambill's students work with her too though.

If she is indeed working with Tammy Gambill, blehh.. Ellie Kawamura made an upgrade to Frank Carroll and Caroline downgrades to Gambill? Charlene Wong anyone? I hope at least her programs are better this year. We don't know the music but we do know she isn't using Lori Nichol for both SP and LP right?

we don't know anything. she was reported to be training in colorado earlier in the month or late last month so maybe she went there to meet with a chreogrepher. But nobody knows anything for sure. Caroline has a non-existant publicity team.

Hi, I'm from then Philippines and I am a fan of Caroline's since her junior days but it's my first time joining here (and FSU).

It really hurts to see how Caroline's technique worsen through the years when she should have improved instead. She's definitely slow and you just really want her to skate clean and you'll be really, really happy for her.

A change of coach is a healthy choice for her. If she really switch coaches with Tammy Gambill (sorry, don't know her. Figure skating doesn't exist in our country), what are the pros and cons for Caroline? Thanks.

Welcome, Frauregina!

You really are a devoted fan, if you're in a country without figure skating and you love it anyway. Like you, many of us regret the fact that Caroline doesn't seem to have progressed from her sparkling junior days. I remember one year when she was just about the only American who won any kind of international medal. And now, as we say over here, she couldn't get elected dogcatcher. But I always hope for the best with someone like Zhang, who has so many fine qualities.

Thanks for the welcome!

I agree. That *much* talent must not go to waste. That's like buying a multi-million dollar nuclear power plant and never use it. She has much potential and that's what make me love her. I even dreamed that she did fix her technique and she's as rock solid as Yu-Na.

Let me be the first of the moderators to welcome you to the board, then (as Olympia beat me to being the first period lol I just like being first ha ha!)! Post often, post long!

I think we do know that she was in Colorado for choreography. Just not sure who, but for some reason Tom Dickson (who did Spanish Gypsy) comes to mind. Is he in Colorado?

Welcome to the board Frauregina. If you are from the Philippines, you might also be a fan of Charice Pempengco. Did you see the Skate for the Heart show last year where Caroline skated to Charice singing "In This Song"?

The audience went crazy over Caroline's regression.

EDIT : bad spelling

Why "downgrades"? Tammy Gambill is a very well-respected coach and I believe Caroline and her skating could benefit from working with/learning from her.
