Where's this Global Warming?

Sean - Rush is an idiot, I'm not. All I was doing was complaining about the weather, and trying to make a joke. Everyone else seemed to get it. ;)

I do get upset with political activists on both sides just arguing up here in Alaska in the summer. We are not having record highs or lows we're not seeing a lot of undue change... it's staying pretty consistant... save for the winter where it's flipping colder. lol

To put me in teh same boat as Rush is a huge insult to me...

ETA - I will say that I live in S. Central AK... I don't get to travel to all of my state... it's just way too huge and some places (most actually) are only accessable by plane... I'll admit I don't have a science degree, nor do I understand all the mumbo jumbo, however global warming has been in effect longer than we've been using up the oil supplies. Has it gone faster? Depends on which reports you read... it seems we're still learning a lot about it, but that doesn't stop people from taking sides and throwing insults when none are needed.

I wasn't talking directly about you, and was only referring to Rush as the idiot. This is an issue regardless of your intent and some comments made by you or other posters (I don't want to point fingers) started leading me to believe this once again is going to be overlooked as a serious issue. BTW, I am not a fan of Gores, but what he is talking about is a topic that needs attention regardless of how I feel regarding politics.

So now that I have tried to clarify that I was not pointing fingers at anyone but Rush and acknowledged the difference between him and Anyone, I will read the rest of your post.

I live with my aunt so bills are not my thing... but she won't let me crank up the heat to where I want it...
:) It's funny how that works out. Paying the gas bill and dialing down the heat seem to go together, somehow.

Again, not my intent, but he did say something similar, so it is not me placing anyone with him, just words that were similar in meaning to the same thing he has said. Coincidence or whatever, just happened to be similar comments / sentiment.

? is this contradicting or just not understood?

Correct, so why use words that would discourage it's importance? That is just my take. Not trying to have an argument or point fingers, but trying to keep awareness from being belittled. Just as some might be questioning it validity I was trying to support it. 2 sides to every coin thing.

Think of it this way (if you want, not trying to tell anyone whats what) Your computer likes it best at 64 degrees.:agree:

You would love my mom's temp settings. It is ridiculous, nothing under 73 and normally she is bypassing that for the 78. Then she will use space heaters in the bathroom to boot.

Rush is an idiot but Al Gore... on the environment... Please. Love him... I only wish he hadn't been a politican and focused on the environment from the beginning. The problem with modern politics is that people cannot see beyond personalities to have thoughtful discussion around the true issues that concern us all... But here's a link on global warming for those interested...

And its a balmy 70 degrees in Richmond...

We have a huge snow storm happening here right now in Lotus Land - (Vancouver and surrounding lower mainland in British Columbia). We just endured the Pineapple Express from Hawaii - we were convinced we really are experiencing global warming - until today that is - now we are getting an arctic front. So much for our warm tropical winter we were informed about for this winter. Lacing up my muklucks.....

Hey Ladskater, here in Newfoundland, we are still golfing-how's that for Global Warming-We are all trading in our snow machine for convertables (cars).

Well, I was trying to keep my mouth shut about Rush but I just can't.
In my opinion, he is a hate monger. He also is really full of the devil. It's people like him that are changing human beings to be hate mongers. Also, would you believe that I don't like him? I can't say I hate anyone. But there sure are a lot of big don't likes.

The lack of political leadership on this issue has been astounding; same goes for this linking of environmentalism to "liberal" ideology. Are you familiar with Tomas' Friedman's "geo-green" principle? Here is a nice summary. Basically, he makes a point that reducing America's dependence on oil would go a long way toward helping the country politically; oh, and, BTW, it would also help the environment. I think the abandonment of this issue of conservatives has led to some sad results. Just one example - I (as an environmentalist) support building more nuclear power plants (which liberals don't support).

Right now, we have a wonderful opportunity to do something about this as oil prices make it worthwhile to spend money on making our houses etc. more efficient. For example, after last winter's heating bill (and we always have the temp on 67F) we actually installed new windows which should save A LOT of energy. We didn't do it because we want to help the environment - we did this because we want to save money. Likewise, my father changed his heating system in the house to install a tankless water heater thus reducing his bills dramatically - once again, not because he a goody-two-shoes liberal, but because he wants to save money. Actually, it's quite a travesty that most houses still use a water heater tank - that squanders more energy than I can wrap my head around.

The challenge for the goverment now is to use the current situation to change the attitudes of both consumers and business in America. Only time will tell if this will happen...

Here is a nice summary.

"It's smart geopolitics. It's smart fiscal policy. It is smart climate policy. Most of all - it's smart politics! Even evangelicals are speaking out about our need to protect God's green earth. "The Republican Party is much greener than George Bush or Dick Cheney," remarked Mr. Schwartz. "There is now a near convergence of support on the environmental issue. Look at how popular [Arnold] Schwarzenegger, a green Republican, is becoming because of what he has done on the environment in California."

Imagine if George Bush declared that he was getting rid of his limousine for an armor-plated Ford Escape hybrid, adopting a geo-green strategy and building an alliance of neocons, evangelicals and greens to sustain it. His popularity at home - and abroad - would soar. The country is dying to be led on this. Instead, he prefers to squander his personal energy trying to take apart the New Deal and throwing red meat to right-to-life fanatics. What a waste of a presidency. How will future historians explain it?"

Speaking of the enviroment in California has anyone seen the documentary Who Killed The Electric Car? Thought it was one of the most interesting movie I've seen.

Likewise, my father changed his heating system in the house to install a tankless water heater thus reducing his bills dramatically - once again, not because he a goody-two-shoes liberal, but because he wants to save money..

I don't think my argument is with the liberals, my argument is that this was not a real slight to anyone or any subject... I just want some good ol global warming to warm my frozen little body... it was a joke that was taken too seriously by one person and everyone jumped on it after that...

I will say that I do know of the tankless water heater, and my aunt had a chance to install one, but didn't have the $ it would take to install/buy it... she's not a liberal or a conservative... she doesn't take sides... but her pocketbook has to follow the rules of business lol

I think a lot of us would be more interested in saving the world so to speak if we could afford it! which is the argument that many have made but again let it become a this side vs that side when really it's a small group that are in control and they have the real power... and they're not 'politicians' ;)

anyway I'm not as cold anymore... it's warming up a couple of degrees we even got snow last night (woo-hoo)

Couple of random thoughts:
Rush Limbaugh is an entertainer, just like Jay Leno, David Letterman and Britney Spears are entertainerslet's not forget that.....

Nobody killed the electric car, it gave up the ghost trying to go up a hill......perhaps it was suicide.....;)
Ever tried an electric scooter.......?

As for water heaters, having experienced both growing up, I can tell you that the continuous flow heater is a great deal better than any tank heater.

They had something on TV last night about a guy who is selling conversion kits that can make pretty much any car run on vegetable oil and/or diesel, you just flip a switch if you're out of Mazola 3000 and run on diesel......
That sounds a little too computery, bug-ridden and break-down prone to me (the more buttons something has, the more likely it is to break...), but it may be a step in the right direction.

Most important random thought of all: All politicians are crooks. All of them. No exceptions.

Well, I hadn't heard of tankless water heaters (as an apartment dweller, I'm just not in that market). So, this discussion enlightened me.

Well, growing up, my aunt and uncle had a tank heater, which meant that after using x amount of hot water, it would start to get sorta lukewarm and subsequently take a while or two to reheat the water being refilled into the tank.
My parents had a (cheaper....) continuous flow heater, in which water gets pumped through a serpentine series of tubes, much like a car radiator and heated as it goes.
Doesn't get quite as boiling hot as the tank heater does, but hot enough for showers in 20 below zero outside temps.
And the water stays pretty much at the same temperature all the time.
If I had the time and resources, I'd get me a house with a wood burning stove, hooked up to the water reservoir.
Those things - albeit being a lot of work and taking some time getting used to them - not only produce very nice heat (as opposed to the suffocating, smelly superheated air that gets pumped out of your apartment wall), they heat water like nobody's business, humidify at the same time, and food cooked in a wood burning oven tastes twice as good!
And as long as you keep the creosote under control, the fire hazard is only as high as the person tending the stove.......
