Many contend that Olympics are growing out of control. Which Winter Olympic sport(s) would you eliminate or at least cut down on (by cut down I mean, for example, eliminating ice dancing from the "figure skating" category).

NOTE THAT YOU CAN VOTE FOR MORE THAN 1 SPORT!

Curling! I'm still angry about our TV station, which was broadcasting Curling instead of Figure Skating most of the time during the last Olympic Games in SLC.

Well, if there is another scandal in skating, I would seriously consider pulling it out until things are fixed. All the drama and backroom deals may be good for attention and ratings, but I believe scandal works against the "sport" in general.

Commenting on how people have voted so far. (BTW, please note that you can vote for however many sports you want)

While I don't watch hochey, I would not eliminate it. It's one of the few sports that is widely watched, brings sponsorship & viership, and therefore $$$.

As for Biathlon - for me it's a sentimental favorite. After all, Coubertin re-introduced Olympic Games after the French defeat in the Franco-Prussian war to popularize physical disciplines necessary for the soldiers. That's why the original emphasize was on sports such as athletics (track and field), swimming, shooting, etc. Biathlon seems to be one sport Coubertin would have approved of wholeheartedly!

I voted for curling.

I think at one point they had talked about getting rid of figure skating because they didn't think it was a sport............and curling and poker are???? Poker is occupying ESPN as much as football and basketball.

I just don't get it.

Dee, figure skating in general is pretty safe, because it's one of the most televised Olympic events. However, many do talk about eliminating ice dancing because that seems more of an art than a sport. In fact, ice dancing was only added to the Olympics in 1980, and basically because the TV stations felt that they got so much viewership for the other 3 figure skating disciplines, they could easily profit from the 4th one as well.

None that were listed. I don't care for "Extreme" kind of sports, like the aerial-freestyle-snowboard-jumpy thingies and stuff like that...ugh.

Actually, I listed all the sports categories listed on the Winter Olympics site. I believe what you're refering to would fall under "Ski jumping, Snowboarding, Nordic combined" category (one of the categories I checked, BTW).

I'd have to go with biathlon, too. It's not that I especially dislike it, it's just that -- well, quite frankly, in the US they show so little of it that if they did get rid of it, no one would probably notice.

I, too, am getting tired of these new "extreme" snow sports (must be a generational thing); I think they've added some new ones this year that sound even weirder than the other ones. If they keep it up, there's going to be little difference between the Olympic and the Winter X-Games. But I realize the TV ratings have a lot to do with it; it's popular, and in North America, we seem to be rather good at it, so that helps revenue.

I wouldn't mind seeing short-track speedskating disappear. I flat out just do not understand this sport at all. What's the object? Keep going around the track at an extreme angle half holding onto the ice until everyone around you stops falling down and taking three other people with them? It's kind of like human bowling. Plus if they took it out of the Olys, perhaps Speedy would get so upset he would resign from the ISU in protest and that could ONLY be a GOOD thing.... (When WAS he a short-tracker, anyway? I was under the impression this was a pretty new sport and he looks pretty dang old to have competed in anything invented in the last couple decades of the 20th century.....)

curling... if there is curling in the winter olympics, why not add exciting sports like shuffleboard or golf to the summer olympics :D blehhhhhh.

I said none because the snowboarding and freestyle skiing were lumped with ski jumping and Nordic combined, which I think should stay. I also don't favor dumping biathalon (anything that gets any exposure at all for shooting sports is okay in my book) or curling, in curling's case because, while I REALLY don't see the point, a lot of people (Canadians and Scots in particular) seem to really get into it.

They're trying to get synchro in. But it's an approval process.

And if poker is a sport, ice dancing is SO a sport. (Poker is not a sport. Poker is a game.)

O.m.g.

:scratch:Can you believe that some guys voted for the elimination of Figure Skating from the O.W.G., being this a figure skating forum???, what's the point for being here if you don't like it?

Never Mind, I was just wondering.

You guys are picking on my favorite sports. Curling rocks. I am going to try out for the U.S. curling team next time. There's a guy on it who's 56.

Biathlon!!!! Think about it. You cross country ski for a while, then stop and shoot off your gun!!!! None of this sissy figure skating stuff. Did you see were Vice President Cheney shot someone in a hunting accident a couple of days ago? (Take that, Osama bin Laden!)

As for extreme sports, Dude! bring on the Flying Tomato. In his interview with Bob Costas he said that his gold medal in half pipe would get him in good with the hot chicks, such as Sasha Cohen.

Actually, I think the extreme sports like snowboarding and mogul skiing will turn out to be the saviour of the Winter Games. The old traditional sports, like ski jumping and downhill racing -- they seem so-o-o twentieth century.

MM :)
