Yulia Lipnitskaya

Maybe I just don't follow sports enough to understand why it's such a big deal... but medal ceremony doesn't bug me. She's a girl who's upset at herself about a disastrous program. I can see why she'd want to hide out/would completely forget the medal ceremony. Also, I suspect that at the moment she didn't realize how it would be seen--it's not like she skipped the medal ceremony for Worlds. Of course GP silver is a huge achievement for 99% of skaters out there, but considering the pressure Yulia's under, and all her achievements, she probably forgot that in the moment. Yulia's just so darn perfect most of the time that a genuine meltdown probably shocked her.

I agree. Still, not a good thing to not partecipate. Not a big deal either.
I don't think it's because she didn't win. She didn't win in the Olympics and Worlds and was not like that.
She won CoR but cried and said in the press conference that she skated bad. Almost suggesting that she didn't deserved the victory.
Never seen a skater so harsh towards herself as her.

As a Liza fan, would I have wanted to see them on the podium together? Of course! But I'll take the positives out of this: Liza has her gold, and Yulia can learn from this experience. Hopefully they'll both grow stronger, and we'll see them on the podium together at many events in the future.

I'm glad about Liza. She skated very well.

How is the situation with the GP's now and the candidates? Liza is the first confirmed, the rest how are they?

^Of course it would've been smarter of Yulia to go. And I agree, it's not because she didn't win. It's because she skated so badly.

Just saying, I'm not mad at her for it. I even understand it. Perhaps because I've done a lot of rash things in my life, so her skipping a GP medal ceremony doesn't seem like a big deal. :p My only wish is that they hadn't made up the "didn't know" excuse (if it indeed is an excuse); I'd rather she came out and sad, "Look, I felt terrible, I was angry at myself, I really didn't want to go." I doubt that'll come over any better with FS fans, but I appreciate blunt truth.

I agree, and I think it is an excuse. I don't know, maybe she said I'm not going deal with it and her staff went in panick and came up with that stupid excuse. Now, I'm worried she has to back that excuse.

As you said, not that the truth would've come better with FS fanatics, but as you said blunt truth is way better and she is like that.

Do you know more or less their possibilities? She needs to win TEB, that's a must right?

Absolutely disgusting. People criticizing a 16 year old girl like they know better. And some of those words even go beyond criticism.
I left a message. Couldn't stop myself. Useless though, I know. :sarcasm:

^^ She'd definitely still be be in with another silver (26 points), bronze would go into tie-breaker and would probably not qualify her depending on how the podiums shake out at RC and NHK.

I'm so gutted for her right now, that was heart-breaking.

Since it wasn't held immediately why is so hard to believe that thinking about the ceremony wasn't even a blip on their radar? Yulia was probably crushed and Eteri was concerned about her not medals. Is it so hard to believe that they were caught up in that and not knowing what time it was because they did not stay?

I feel almost like this event was cursed, it was just so tragic.

I think that people juste have to understand that she is just a child, she is 16 years old and as she said her FS today was maybe the worst FS of her all career. Today was a very bad day for her, she was disappointed and the pressure was too important. And even if her excuse seems improbable, people just can't criticize her with such violence.

Sorry I am from France, and I don't speak english very well ... : Sarcasme:

I think it seems unprofessional frankly. Skating is essentially her job. She receives money from her federation for it, it is not unreasonable for her to be expected to show up for things she is scheduled for. Does not matter if she did not want to go, or messed up the times, it still seems unprofessional. Yes teenagers can act both professionally and unprofessionally.

It would be unprofessional for an accountant/lawyer/barrister/doctor/etc. to miss a scheduled appointment, but I suspect a lot of us have seen it happen, and a lot likely would not find one time enough to take their business elsewhere. Much the same, this is to me a one time incident, that while I view it was unprofessional at best, I don't think it should haunt her, nor do I think it should be a one strike you are out situation. My hope is everyone moves on, but I do hope she does not do it again.

Although some of my friends joked about she went back to check if Yuzuru is fine ORZ. That is a joke which I know not appropriate to mention here.
So still mystery!

I swear to god that I was about to write that on FB group.
I didn't because may people were seriously worried about Yuzuru and I felt maybe non appropriate to mention that because of what happened to him.

Don't worry. It's very appropriate here, in fact is needed some laughing. She's ok, didn't have a bad accident like poor Yuzuru.
Just a bad day with skating.

Smiling again :) Hope things get back to normal soon. Wow did Yulia get really big or has Elizaveta always been so dainty? Beautiful smiles all around to lighten the mood over that horrendous competition.

Anyway, the past is in the past. If you ask me, she should ditch R&J...I mean gorgeously tragic is such a great concept for her performances on ice....but not when it's in the literal sense . She should have just stuck with the plan and not let the adults tell her what's right for her. After all, that's how she ended up with that SL masterpiece last year. It's so painfully obvious how she just was not into that program last night. It could have been absolutely exquisite, no doubt, but if it's going to have to be such a labored effort than it really would serve Yulia better to find something she actually connects with. No point of risking something like this happening again. Re-watching that was hard, but definitely not as bad as seeing it live. Ugh. I'm just happy she didn't injure herself. The over-scoring was disappointing...but that's up to the judges so no need to criticize her for that. While I thought Polina Edmunds deserved a medal over Yulia, neither her nor Murakami produced anything memorable during this event (well, Polina showed a lot of promise as usual). I'm just happy that there's still a chance to see more of Yulia if she gets into the final...deservedly or not. The one thing that's irksome though is the whole medal ceremony thing. If Yulia has issues with losing graciously (which hasn't been an issue in the past aside from a few shady glances at her competitors)...well at least this will be the biggest lesson she's had yet. It actually is quite rude (still love you Yulia though!), and if it continues it could seriously damage her reputation a lot...especially when she goes to places like China where respect is a big thing. If that's not the case (and I'm confident), then I hope she isn't hurt, or whatever happened isn't going to be a bigger issue.

EDIT: I don't even watch men's that much but seeing this catastrophe is in many ways, harder than watching what happened to Yulia. What is it about this particular event...

Absolutely agree with you.

It was her who didn' want Mulan.
R&J it's a beautiful program and it's not tragic. There si no death she's protraying here.
They've already explained the concept.

I completely agree with you, we can just say that today was a very bad day, and I hope the next competition in France will be better for Yulia. She can't be perfect all the time...

I don't agree about Yuliya making up the excuse, but people should get over it. The reason why she wasn’t at the ceremony was probably because she was shocked at her performance and was extremely angry at herself. Everyone who’s truly her fan knows that she is a perfectionist and is very hard on herself. There are famous athletes older than twice her age who have done and said things that are a thousand times worse than this. Even if she had gone to the ceremony, the haters would have come up with a billion other reasons to hate on her. :roll eye: All I can say is, let them keep on hating

I know this is a very weird time for a first post, but I would just like to add that I absolutely ADORE this kid!

I know that last night was shocking to say the least, and that yes, she definitely should've gone to the ceremony if she physical could have. The excuse was poor and beneath an athlete of her calibre. This is pure speculation and over-worrying on my part...But honestly, last night after all the CoC chaos, I saw a jptv video of Yulia crying, followed by a twitter pic of only Liza and Kanako on the podium, and I was severely worried something serious had happened (or god-forbid were to happen), I hoped that either Eteri or her mother was keeping an eye out for (/on) her. She's one tough introverted kid, but she is also soooo vulnerable to something as public and scrutinised as this. I read on another forum that Tarasova she said both 'the athlete, and the coach is to blame' (or something along those lines) for the lack of decorum and respect, I agree yet there is ONE huge exception. Under certain circumstances, "saving face" should be put strictly aside for the well-being of an athlete, which is second to none. If that was the case, then I commend and am grateful to Eteri. Again, I am purely speculating.

For me, Yulia's magnetism extends beyond just skating. Her blunt, fiery, unpredictable, impulsive personality is one of her greatest qualities, yet it can also be her achilles heal, and can be an extremely easy and vulnerable target for folks and critics to attack. I am Chinese-by-birth, and I do believe Yulia was born in the year of the Tiger. So forgive me if I go off on a little tangent here.
'Tiger people are daring fighters, they are capable of standing up to the better end for what they think is right. Although they could be selfish from time to time in the little things, they are capable of great generosity. Tigers are unpredictable, always tense. and like to be in a hurry. Tiger people are difficult to resist, for they are magnetic characters and their natural air of authority confers a certain prestige on them. They are tempestuous yet calm, warm-hearted yet fearsome, courageous in the face of danger yet yielding and soft in mysterious, unexpected places. Tigers are very confident, perhaps too confident sometimes.'

I adore her, and hope above all else she mentally recovers from all this, and learns from this. I love her skating (she reminds me of younger, less refined version of S.Cohen, whom I use to watch as a kid), but her health and well-being should be put first.

Don't understand your emphasis/outrage re an "official" Facebook page. It is an independent website/magazine's FB page -- unaffiliated with the ISU or any federation.

It "officially" belongs to International Figure Skating, but so what? This thread "officially" belongs to GS.
It is only natural that a range of opinions would be represented in the comments in both places.

My thing is that if YL is not old enough to be a gracious loser, I wish that she had waited to become a Senior lady. If she wants to enjoy the higher highs of Senior competition, then she needs to accept the lower lows as well.

Why are you in this thread golden411? You do realize we can talk to you in Free Skate thread right?

And it's obvious that she is distraught about putting on an embarrassing performance, not about losing. Yes she should have been at the ceremony but people are trying to turn it into something it isn't.

This behavior is very similar to the Olympic inidvidual skate disappointment. Similar to last year at the Olympics, someone will sit down and tell her that a silver finish is quite good--all but one other skater would love to trade places. Remind her that Megapolis is truly outstanding. So far, this year is the reverse of last year, the short program is heart-felt and spectacular. Then take Ilya's tact (see interview posted here #2637 which is very similar to Alba's earlier analysis #2627) regarding preparation and practice. I repeat, this program has been her nemesis, she likely wanted to at least equal Schindler's List. I have no doubt that her mother and Eteri understand her and know exactly what to do. We need to remember that she was working toward an Olympic championship from age 9 or before, and that Schindler's List is widely praised for its exceptional qualities. It's none of our business why she chooses not to participate in a formality such as the medals ceremony, and it is rarely appropriate to compare behavior of a teenager to an adult professional. At the very least, let's remember that she isn't in this for money, this is not a business deal. She pours her soul into every minute and will pay the price over and over. She richly deserves love from us, not criticism, psychoanalysis, and advice.
