Yuma Kagiyama

This is the CBC television broadcast of Yuma's long program with Kurt Browning's commentary (no short programs were aired). I had to upload his performance on Streamable because Dailymotion rejected it due to the music.

2022 Worlds LP (CBC TV 720p):

These vids are less significant, but Kurt Browning talks about Yuma in both.
2022 Worlds Men Opening Montage + Discussion + SP Recap (CBC TV 720p):

The programme about Yuma was interesting. It went into some depth about his struggles earlier in the Olympic season (most of it was mental - he was overwhelmed by the pressure he felt about having to produce results and compete with the "big boys"). He overcame that, continued to work on the 4 loop after seeing how Shoma and Yuzu continued to challenge themselves, and worked on his presentation by attending contemporary dance classes with a top dancer/instructor. Lori Nicholl talked about how she used his FP piece (Gladiator) to bring out Yuma's mental strength and will to win, which was tucked away deep inside. Yuma also talked about his SP: "I used to smile as part of the choreography, so it was kind of forced, but I was quite relaxed at the Olympics and found myself smiling anyway."

His dad and coach Masakazu said that little Yuma wasn't a natural jumper, so he drilled skating skills and spins a lot, which explains his stellar skating skills. Their relationship is heartwarming - I'm sure there must be times when they clash, but Yuma said he had always respected and admired his dad as an athlete/coach and had no desire to train with anyone else. Maybe this will change at some point, but if it ain't broke, why fix it? Masakazu-san seems like a calm and philosophical coach who knows when to lead and when to step back.

There were also scenes of Yuma graduating from high school, taking photos with his new mirrorless camera (he loves photography), and working with his personal trainer and nutritionist.

Summary: My view of Yuma is unchanged. What a lovely young man and awesome talent. He wants to perfect the 4Lo and work on the 4Lz. Can't wait for next season!!!

Hello everyone in this fan fest! I'm surprised there are only 8 pages dedicated to our new Olympic silver medalist and two time world silver medalist. We'll have to do something about that. :)

Anyway, I just wanted to express how much in love I am with Yuma's skating skills and jumps! His jump landings are just so unbelievably soft and smooth. :love2:

For me, Yuma's free skate at the Olympic Team Event was one of the highlights of the entire season.

Yuma attended the opening ceremony for the freshman class at Chukyo University! He's in the sports science program and hopes to learn English and Chinese (because the characters are similar to kanji) and has rugby and volleyball selected as his sports. Yuhana Yokoi basically filled out his entire schedule for him. He doesn't thing he will get tattoos/piercings or dye his hair (what a weird question lol) but wants to be able to drive and have a proper college experience because he really couldn't in middle/high school. He's a bit concerned about getting in all the credits to graduate in time, but Chukyo's on-campus rink will be a huge help. Yuma also seems very determined to get a gold medal at the next Olympics.

Yuma's new SP is to "Believer" by Imagine Dragons, choreo by Shae! He's planning to debut it at the end of the month (or maybe DOI idk), will have a backloaded combo (4S, 3A, 4T-3T), and apparently it is a program that uses the whole body to the point where it hurts. He narrowed down to this song from 100 options, and heard it from phone ringtones? (The last bit has a weird translation so don't quote it). He spent 3 hours a day for five days working with Shae exclusively on the program.

An update (copied from GPF Men's FS thread)

He has been training since the end of September after a two-month break from the ice. He struggled with regaining quads and 3As, and is currently not at 100% yet. I believe he is still dealing with some pain/lingering effects from his injury, as stress fractures take a long time to heal, seen with Rika. He is planning on competing at JNats, likely with "watered-down" content (likely 3 quads in the free and 2 in the short), and is excited to perform. He has started doing media-open practices, which is a very good sign that he and his team feel confident about his fitness levels. I expect that he'll be less consistent in his comeback, but he seems to have a good team around him and some of his best programs yet that push him artistically.
