Yuzuru Hanyu: 2013-14 Season

Well I personally won't worry about Yuzu getting the same style of costume for next season. First I think Orser said Yuzu is going to change the style. Second, even if he would wear another Johnny style/designed costume, it is fine with me. It is still his choice. And Yuzu is still Yuzu. :) Same about music. Anything will be fine and I will look forward to how he handles it and get evolved with it. I am really open-minded

I don't know if this video has been posted or not when we discussed novice skaters. This little boy Jun Hwan CHA from South Korea is just amazing. His body feature resembles that of Yuzu and his posture is better (I think).

It's good to know that Asia has many talents to come. Let's wait and see.

Anyways, by the time this boy compete in the senior, Yuzuru might have retired already. You know the skating career of skaters in single discipline. :slink: not anyone can be Plushenko (I love Plushy, but frankly I've always thought he should have retired 4 years ago). And even though I love Yagudin very much, I pretty much seconded his decision to retire at the age of 23.

Thanks skatefan22! You're not the only Yuzuru fan who's reminded of him at seeing this little boy, and not just because of the expanding hair when he spins;). Like Yuzuru, he has this ability for people to notice every little thing he does as well as great commitment and energy to his program. Definitely someone to watch out for.

Interesting that Yuzuru and Javier, generally considered as the two men who will contend for the top spot in this quad, both say that you never know when a junior skater in an astoundingly short period of time makes a quantum leap in improvement and shoots past the "veterans," citing Yuzuru himself as an example. But as has been observed, Yuzuru is something of an outlier, so I still think of him as the man to beat. He'll be entering his prime and I hope his programs, both technically and artistically, will reflect that.

Come to think of it, people often say Yuzuru is notable for his jumps. But personally I think he is notable for his spins. I mean, after watching his young performances and compare to other kids at the same age (from 10 to 12), it's not the jumps that stood out in his performance in his young age, it's the spins. ;) we can see other kids with excellent jumps, too.

Yuzuru didn't actually stand out with his jumps until, I guess, he reached the age of 13-14 (when he started to master 3A). If we talk about the jumps, then on any good day, all the guys can jump very well. Denis Ten can jump very well, too, even higher than Yuzuru sometimes. Javi can jump very well, too. So it's not just the jumps that make Yuzuru special.

With spins, I think it's in his nature. Very pleased to the eyes. I hope one day he will be able to reach Lambiel's level of spins.:)

Hm...I can see him holding out on retirement if the new crop of Japanese men's don't perform up to expectation. He might feel obligated to compete just to maintain the 3 spots for Japan. The top 4 men right now--Yuzuru aside--are all going to be 26-28 by 2018 and they might not even continue till then. I'm not sure how the next group will fair against the up and coming skaters from other countries. I'm doubtful they will be able to maintain 3 spots, same with the Japanese ladies now without Mao and Akiko (against up and coming girls from Russia and US) Although whatever he decides to do, I hope its on his own accord and not one that the JSF/outsiders forced onto him (same with Mao)

I've seen him on Yuna's show before..I think. He good but I don't like holding onto hope for kids under 15 because many of them gets buried before even making it to seniors  And posture wise.... I think alot of people have better posture than Yuzuru lol he's a sloucher.

I don't really have a preference on his new music and costume tbh. I expect the costume to be very "johnny weir-ish" because that's just what he likes. I want something fun and exciting for his music because its the start of a new quad, the time you can just relax and have a bit of fun before the olympic pressure builds again.

Yuzuru stands out as a technician, but its not the types of jumps he can execute but the difficulty of his jumps is what puts him above the rest IMO. His GOE is unmatched (Patrick on a good day can get pretty close though) and no else can back load their programs with difficult combo like Yuzuru can and nail them almost perfectly. Even Han Yan's GOE on his 3A, on average, is lower than Yuzuru's. I think that's what sets him apart and makes him special.

Thank @cruzceleste to translate Javier's interview in Spanish. I just read Japanese subtitles to catch what he said.:) And all posts you guys discussed about new programs are amusing. 3Q!

By the way, I learned that DW choreographed for Nobu's SP in 2005 with the music of Barbiere di Siviglia. Very impressive! Share with you all.

I mean when he was small, it's not his jumps that stood out, but his spins. At the same age (10-13) there could be other mini skaters with better jumps than Yuzuru but for some reason, they couldn't develop it like Yuzuru. Yuzuru has beautiful spins even at the age of 10. And I haven't seen that with other boys at same age. Even the boy in the above video clip. That's why I said Yuzuru's spins are special. He might have to focus too much on his jumps now, so sometimes his spins receive level 3, but mostly he receives level 4 for his spins.

When Yuzuru won gold at worlds junior 2010, his jumps have become so big and beautiful, much much better than his peers and that was very unpredictable for the level of his jumps at the age of 10 (when he was 10, no one could predict his jumps would be like that when he reached 14-15 years old). I hope with better basic skills, Yuzuru's spins will improve, too.

The positions he use to do when he was younger very much resembles Lambiel's and was so gorgeous but they don't give you the levels. Unfortunately, we might not see those kinds of spins from him again unless its in an EX(cross our fingers?). The spins he has now gives him the levels that he needs because it hits those 4 bullets so its doubtful he will divert too far from that.

Its also the reason that we rarely see those kinds of spins on the senior level even though there are a few people are are capable of doing similar types. :)

Also...please, please get rid of that ugly final spin that was in his FS :disapp:

I agree with you. I just remeber his great spins when he was in novice/junior category. His jumps were also good when succeeded, but he also fell a lot

Everybody is talking about his Biellmann spins, but I adore his donut spins. That reminded me of Yukari Nakano who was famous for her beautiful donut spins. Mens skaters usually do not have such amazing flexibility with consistency.

I must say, Yuzuru's donut spin may be even better than hers :o:

Shizuka Arakawa also noted in the interview with Yuzuru that she had received strong impression from his spins, more than jumps.

Oh, by the way, Yukari said in the interview with Yuzuru that her Firebird costume was the one inspired by Yuzuru's Firebird costume. That's nice :yay:

Corrected: hell --- fell
Sorry, I was asleep

Yes, I remember this part of interview last June. The Firebird costumes were also handmade by their own mother. Yuzu even suggested one day they might perform together in a show with this "sister & brother dress". ;)

I think I read somewhere where Yuzuru said that doing the Bielmann spin is getting harder right now for him. everytime I see him doing it, his speed getting slower, idk I could be wrong.

I hope he will stop doing the Bielmann spin next season. He might need it for Juliet program, but next season he will do new ones so that spin might not be needed anymore. I hope he knows what is right for his body.
