Yuzuru Hanyu: 2014-15 Season

ITA. It is entitlement to think that an athlete (no matter what level, but especially someone like Hanyu who is hounded by the media enough already) owes you personal time and acknowledgement, and then to go on and complain about it online is immature. To some extent I can understand feeling disappointed, but especially if it is a non-official fanmeet like when he is obviously on his way to get somewhere, or in the middle of a competition then fans really shouldn't have any expectations. He obviously makes efforts to interact with fans when he can, but he isn't a pop star nor is he an infinitely giving angel. As both a human and an athlete, he needs to put himself first sometimes.

The conversation was eliminated after some hours I could read it before they delete it and the incident happened after Yuzuru's practice for the long program, that practice where he popped like fives times his salchow, they wanted to give him a gift and he did receive the gift but he didn't said thank you or anything, that's why they were sad/disappointed because of his cold reaction, Anyway it was getting quite ugly and some people started to call him fake and that he only liked japanese fans, but fortunately at the end the girls apologized for their words.

I was revering to the GPF the season AFTER the Olympic win. No one had competed in the following GPF (same year different season) after winning olympic gold, therefore, Hanyu is the first to win Olympics, Worlds and the next season, GPF again.

:agree: for everything you said. People need to remember that he is an athlete first, not a pop icon/personality. He was focused on doing his job - skating, and he did just that. Personally, if I went to see him skate live, I would have been plenty content getting to see Hanyu's SP and FS and the joy that he exhibited afterwards.

That made me feel sad and a bit frustrated, I know they were sad for his cold attitude but they saw two of his best skates LIVE, but oh well I try to understand them

That is sad. I'm sorry for them. --But it's another reason not approach an athlete in the middle of competition time.
The timing is not right, their minds are 100% concentrated on what they need to do. Wait till after the competition is over, during fan-meeting times to get the best response.

Okay, so I finally found that Yuzuru Hanyu fanpage on FB and apparently people are calling him "fake", "two-faced", and "xenophobic"

Now that is going too far! Honestly, they should just be happy that they were there to experience it all. Many people who are even bigger Yuzuru fans will probably never get the opportunity to see him skate live. It's such a rare opportunity and very costly. If I was them, okay yes, Yuzuru didn't gave me an autograph but heck, he was 5 feet away from me. I could careless what happens after this b/c I saw him in person. Yeeaahh! And let's not forget he spent his last couple of weeks signing cards and sending them out to his fans from all over the world. Honestly, is there any other skater out there who does this for their fans? Because wow, how considerate (I'm just shocked that these fans were so quick to judge all because of that particular encounter. I can understand the fan's disappointment, but to go as far as calling him names and assuming he's a bad person was rather an ignorant move. We all know how grateful he is to his fans, he always make sure to thank them in his interviews. I am sorry for the fan who had to experience that but after a disappointing practice, he was probably not in the mood to receive any gifts).

I really think that off-rink, he should be left alone unless it is an event or presentation. I thought about this a lot because I have actually walked by Yuzuru a few times in the two years and a bit since he has been in Toronto. I always try to act like I don't recognize him (although the first time I saw him my jaw kind of dropped). A person should be entitled to his space and privacy. He gives so much as it is. He is so generous. He needs his time-outs and, now with his being so recognizable, there are very few places that he can go without being bothered. it has to be tough. Fans need to be understanding. If they really care, they should more give him his space.

My daughter is just a local level figure skating competitor. Even then I don't bother her after the practice at a competition. If it was a bad practice, I don't even talk to her. Those people who call themselves a fan should understand that skaters shouldn't be bothered before the competition in any case. Skater's state of mind is not normal (?) especially after the bad practice before the competition. I don't think Yuzuru is an exception.

Wow! Just wow at those so called fans for calling him names publicly like that just caz they didn't get the expected reaction they were hoping for.

I only gather the info from this thread but if I'm understanding this correctly they are trying to get a hold of him before he finished the competition? These "fans" do realize that he is fighting one of the toughest battle in his career right? Both mentally and physically after what happened in COC and NHK???? And all they could care for is that they didn't get the appreciation they want after they present their gifts?

I understand they would be disappointed, I probably would feel the same.....but in the first place I would never thought of bothering him while he is still in a competition mode. Again, especially not after what he has been through this season! So to me these "fans" are just "fake fans" and "two-faced" fans because if you truly support him as an athlete, you would not turn around and get all bitter because you didn't get the fan service you were hoping for, while he is still in the middle of a competition.

Couldn't they just be happy that he gave them two memorable skates, which demonstrated how hard he had been working since NHK, that's his way of giving back to those who support him!

Note that a large number of Yuzu's fans are teenage girls or in early 20s. They are imature in many ways so i kind of understand why they got so emotional when they were disappointed. These kids need to learn to respect their idol's privacy and personal space, as well as the appropriate way ( time and place) to support him, and what to expect from him.

I read somewhere when Yuzu arrived at Shanghai airport for CoC, some fangirls rushed to him and took pictures with him on their cell phones. Poor Yuzu was in shock...later on one of his fan pages had some serious dicussions on the basics for fans who expect to meet him, such as respect his personal space, do not bother him when he needs rest(such as after a long flight) or between competitions, do not fight with fans of his rivals ect. I was glad to see these young people quickly learn the lessens and grow to be ( at least try to be) respectful and responsible fans.

Damn these people are so lucky they get to see Yuzuru live and that's an opportunity many fans (including myself) will never have mainly due to location, school, money , etc. They're being extremely selfish and immature, they need to understand Yuzuru is an athlete and the way he gives back to his fans/shows gratitude is giving his 100% effort in performances and competitions. I get being upset that's understandable but the name calling is uncalled for, he's human just like the rest of us. He acknowledged it and wants to show everyone his gratitude, he's very thoughtful of us and appreciates all of our support. Especially during competition it isn't a good idea to go up to an athlete, they're only thinking about the competition so of course he's not gonna personally give everyone attention, and he's also feeling a lot of pressure so giving him extra is just not good at all. Heck I wouldn't even care if Yuzuru didn't give me any attention at least I saw him LIVE and in person skating beautifully, that's something from him I would be grateful for and I'm shock that some fans don't see it this way. :disapp:

I am slightly cringing that these fans are treating him like a boy band member - and boy do I feel bad for boy band members for their more "enthusiastic" fans. It's one thing to joke about it, but another to actually act it out. It's nice to hear that they learned quick. It's sad that teens need to be taught this, but more so that those in their early 20s still need to be taught this :disapp:

On a positive note, I love that he always seems so honest in his interviews. Hopefully, he'll be able to enjoy all his skates from now on like he did at the GPF

He popped 5 quads in practice and they expected him to smile and greet them? If it were me I would just scream and swear because my practice didn't go well. And I am in the middle of a serious competition with huge pressure, with all the criticism that I shouldn't be here...bla bla, my practice was terrible, my health condition was not good, and people constantly followed me... I would be crazy. Poor Yuzuru. I understand why they felt sad but they chose the wrong time. Right after a bad practice.

They caught him at a very bad time. I'm sure he wasn't expecting to be confronted by fans at that moment. Sorry that these young (I hope) fans feel bad, but Hanyu's reaction is completely understandable.

Lol I find that these fans feel like Yuzuru owes them something just because they support him but they should understand that he isn't around to give them fanservice, he's an ATHLETE and his job is to compete.

On a side note, does anyone have links to Yuzuru's GPF performances with CBC, NBC, or Universal commentary (i.e. english commentary other than B.ESP) or have they not been broadcasted yet? Thanks
