There's an article published today on the web in which Brian Orser is being interviewed by Japanese magazine, Shukan Gendai.

Talking about what Yuzuru needs to improve more, Orser says:
"He also needs to learn to say 'No.' After he won Sochi, many people have tried to be connected with him. He's gentle so he tried to respond to all of them, which sometimes even disturbed his training. If he wants to win Pyeongchang, he needs to save his time, sometimes by saying 'No.'"

I think this answers enough to the change of his attitude. It's something he's told to do, and definitely something he needs to do.
As I'm in Japan reading Japanese web articles, blogs, SNS etc., I scent that his surroundings are becoming more and more difficult, after Sochi and then after that CoC accident.
I'm actually really glad that he's now starting to protect himself.

By the way, I couldn't help but laugh about what Orser said right after that:
"I want him to improve his English. He has the habit of saying 'Yeah' and when he says that, he's normally not understanding me. When he says 'Yeah,' he does the same mistake which he had done before I explained. So, these days, when he say 'Yeah,' I tell him 'Come. Let's talk.' (laugh). Perhaps through that, his English is getting better day by day."

I can vividly imagine Yuzuru just saying 'Yeah'...:P
I remember the days when I first lived abroad, I was just like him indeed.

And here is my most favorite part:
"'Why is Yuzuru attractive though he falls?' That's the best question I've ever asked. Talent, technic, appearance...there are may answers to that, but I think his spirit is the best answer. Yuzuru loves skating. That passion even attracts me as a coach. It's been 17 years since I retired, but I also loved skating and worked hard on training as he does. Yuzuru's performance reminds me of those days. His skating not only moves me but also moves all audiences. Of course he has excellent technics, but 'the love for skating', that is exactly what makes his performance more attractive."

(I'm actually posting for the first time here. I'm not a huge Yuzuru fan, I'm rather an overall figure skating fan, but I thought it's nice to share this article here. Hope my English is alright.)

I've written first that I'm not a huge Yuzuru fan because it seemed to me to state myself as a Yuzuru fan is like becoming one of those crazy fans, but I was reading the older posts of this forum and realized I'm totally his fan as much as all other fans here are...!

Congratulation to Yuzuru! I was one of these lucky people who could see his wonderful performance live in Barcelona. His jumps are spectacular, fantastic spins, quality and confidence everywhere! That was great program, but ,,only" on technical side. I think he could give more in interpretation. He changed some of transition - I guess he just wanted to land everything, because he's not in top form so he simplified program a little bit. He was really focused on jumps. I love his costume and black gloves with frills emphasise nuances of choreography. Medal ceremony was funny (friendship between Javi and Yuzu just killed me xD) and touching (especially during anthem). Anyway competition was great, I saw so many great skaters that I admired for years through tv screen. I spent a lot of money....but I don't regret this. Barcelona is incredible beautiful and inspirational city and Spanish are really friendly and open minded.
I would like also to refer to your discussion about crazy fans...After competition I decided with my friend to go and look around venue - it's really close to sea and beach. After awhile we wanted to go to metro station but we saw big crowd at CCIB .I think that was quite unfortunately that athletes hotel was side by side to arena... I saw police officers and provisional barriers. We get there when dance pairs were living venue. All of them are so beautiful :) Everyone was so nice to fans - they signed autographs and didn't mind to take photos with fans. When they went to hotel we, me and my friend, wanted to leave because I thought that men already left venue. Unfortunately (yes unfortunately because now I regret staying there) I saw Japanese fan looking around with big Pooh....so I didn't move. Some time later Javier showed up with attendance of police officers....he waved to fans and rushed to hotel. Several dozen of fans were waiting for Yuzuru but he didn't come. Me and my friend capitulated (we were hungry and tired) and just went to metro station. As we were waiting for change of light at crossing I saw in the hotel lobby huge crowd of fans....they stood even outside the hotel....I thought: ,,Thank goodness Yuzu didn't show up, maybe he's resting in hotel already". I don't know what was next because we just left venue, but that was scary to see all these crazy people...I love Yuzuru's skating but he's also human...he needs rest and some private space...

I really think that this was a dangerous situation as you describe, and both organizer, the people from JSF and Yuzuru was really surprised, maybe under other circunstances he/ his team will be more willing to meet fans. But in this situation it was practicly a mod, and you don´t know what could have happened if he show up, they could have starting pushing and would have been not only dangerous for Yuzuru, but for fans too.

So many people seem to think he can do no wrong, that has to be an insane kind of pressure in its on right. I'm sure that can drive a person crazy if it's not checked. Alright, these next sentences are pure speculation but in regards to fan interaction, my friend and I noticed that he didn't shake hands or get close to the fans during the NHK gala. In addition to him getting bodyguards for the event we joked that maybe he has a stalker now. I DON'T actually think he has a stalker but the sudden shift in fan interaction makes me wonder if a line was crossed somewhere. Or maybe it's all precaution because of his CoC accident. Or maybe he's really trying that whole 'no' thing out for good. Either way, PURE SPECULATION!

Edit: Heck yeah 900 pages! Wish it were a happier subject though

Yeah, some people think he is perfect and has no flaws :disapp:. Actually thanks for what happened at the GPF some of them realized he is not. I hope that in the next competition he goes fans will be more aware about respecting his privacity and understand that he is in a competition and needs to concentrate, so he probably won't have the time to sign or take a picture.

Those people who call themselves a fan should understand that skaters shouldn't be bothered before the competition in any case. Skater's state of mind is not normal (?) especially after the bad practice before the competition. I don't think Yuzuru is an exception.

^^This. Plus shouldn't scream the skater name a few seconds before the music start (the incident at World 2014 SP where a girl scream his name).

Haha. Funny you say that cause I'm a Directioner myself. But I'm not one of the CRAZY fans.
 
Btw I have no idea how he manages to stay focused when every jump he performs(sometimes even those which are popped) is followed by insane screaming. It's so intense you can barely hear the music. I'd take yoga classes if I was in his shoes. :biggrin:
 
You can see from my name "Schatz" that I'm german. I felt sorry about the little german girl. But his father describing Yuzu as arrogant really made me mad.
yeah, chinese fans seem to be really polite and wise. Once there're some crazy behaviors of some young fans, they make new rule for the fans and reason the fans. Just look, how quiet the COC rink became before Yuzuru's programm.
 
I'm sure if Orser or JSF never told him to avoid his fans, he would had stay and signed autographs. That would take hours! Might as well treat everyone equally by not giving everyone autographs than giving 1 to 4 people fanservice and see the other hundreds of fans complaining about injustice. He seems like a humble and kind-hearted person, no doubt about it. I'm glad to see he can say "no", even to his fans. I hope he can also say the same thing with the JSF when they offer him 60 ice shows.

The father has no right to call Yuzuru arrogant! Yuzuru is totally the opposite of that.

If all of his fans give him space and privacy and not be crazy, then things might be looking up. WE owe HIM space and privacy. Think of it like if it were you. Would YOU want people swarming you and give you no breathing space? I imagine you would say no. I always look at it as if it were myself. Like even if skaters, singers, bands, etc gets hugs all the time from fans and the fans just go up for hugs, I wouldn't do that. I would always ask first. Because I know me, if it's not family, friends, teammates, people from school that I trust, or people that I admire (Like singers, bands, skaters, or YouTubers (Like when I saw Jason Brown at a meet and greet after a SOI show, he hugged everyone that came up and met him. So he initiated the hug, which I was okay with since I'm a huge fan of Jason)), I would want them to ask me first. Because especially if it's a dude I don't trust or don't know, I'll start to get in a panic.

Same with autographs and pictures. Be polite and courteous and ask first. Don't talk to them for too long because you want other fans to have the chance to talk to them.

So remember the golden rule: Treat others like how they would like to treat you.
