Yuzuru Hanyu: 2014-15 Season

The judges may be strict but I don't see the purpose of being strict on spin levels and step sequence levels. These levels should be more objective and it isn't great for Japanese judges to be marking them down on their levels when they would be getting higher internationally, if they are actually doing so to prevent criticism of favouritism or National inflation. Heck, what's the point of giving both Tatsuki and Yuzuru such scores for their programs when they would definitely be getting much higher scores for the same programs in international competition?

Beats me. But look at Russian Nationals, even is you inflate the score international palete will be harder, so maybe they want to send the skaters a message to work harder?

Or maybe they just want more

I don't know. And I don't think both Tatsuki and Yuzuru's performance today were that off to lost those levels. Yuzuru did get high GOE though, but it's true that both his 4T and 3A today are bettr than at GPF so I think the GOE is right.

I saw an article about yuzu's self reflection on sp. my Japanese is not good so what I am concerned is, did he say that he did 4lz in practice, and that was also one of the reasons why he's having problems with 3lz?

Yes apparently it says he landed 4Lz in practice... :bang: Maybe that's why he has had so many problems with his 3Lz oh dear. But it's weird. I don't think that's the only reason. He's worked on his 4S but he's never had any major problems with his 3S...

This cant be real  i wonder how he could lose levels for all 4 elements, judges seems to be really strict, machida seems to lose levels as well but congrats hopefully can do better tomorrow :cheer:

Holy....that height! Its like another Yuzuru could stand under him :shocked: Anyone know which jump that was? Lutz?

I don't think the panel was particularly strict, what I think is that absurd inflation didn't happen like last year, when Yuzuru received 103 and 194 for example  or Russian Nationals almost always ... But I don't think it means to be "strict", just not absurdly inflated. There's much more strict panels out there. Yuzuru received 3 GOE across the board for his 4T and 3A, didn't he? This isn't strict at all. Also Shoma received all level 4 I think. Anyway, I prefered his performance at GPF even with the lutz fall, he seemed more "there" to me. I would put his PCS down a few points. Still, hang on to the free (and the lutz) Yuzuru !! Earn this title rightfully, I know you can do it :yay:

Lol the scores last year was :laugh2:-tastic but that was Olympic+national inflation scoring and we all know how that goes. Its just weird how this year it seem like those 2 were "underscored" in levels compared to what they'd get on the international level

That's what I was thinking. Quad lutz may have affected his triple lutz. I saw one video from CC of him doing quad lutz, and he is starting it more from let's say off axis position to straighten up as he goes with rotation, it looks similar now with his 3lutz, but he can't get out of leaning forward in the air

My explanation: JSF wants to drop Mura, Daisuke Murakami, Kozuka... and the rest off the world team. They want Shoma to join Yuzuru and Tatsuki on the WC team.

i watched the program and my best guess is 3A

or loop for that matter cause he practiced 4lo this summer

The best performance of Yuzuru's SP so far. Okay, the lutz still seems to be an issue, but at least he didn't fall and had a (mainly) clean combo even if the toe was a double.

My explanation: JSF wants to drop Mura, Daisuke Murakami, Kozuka... and the rest off the world team. They want Shoma to join Yuzuru and Tatsuki on the WC team.
That would explain the levels. But why would they want to drop Mura, Murakami, Kozuka, ect.? (I haven't seen the videos yet... were they really awful?)

Yes, Olympics + National is the ultimate combo for inflation. Lol I don't know, maybe they were danged in levels to make up for how they were held up in PCS? Just kidding

This seems pretty evident to me, I've seen so much videos of Shoma fluff, great but I think it's too early to so much media hype, let him build up his international cred first. I think it would be great if he make the world team tough, I mean he deserves it, his performance until now was great and it's not like he's juniorish, quite the opposite actually, I think he would fair out really really well at seniors. Yuzuru made the worlds team at 17 too after all. (Still, I'm biased towards Sota :hopelessness:, but ok he's 14 still plenty of time.)

Mura fell on his 4T.
Kozuka was a disaster.
Murakami was ok. -Had a clean skate, but not brilliant.

Shoma was much better than them in the SP.

Because Shoma seems to be more consistent? JSf needs new star and Mura, Murakami and Kozuka are not what they want.
I think Shoma deserves to be in third in SP. But it does look like both Yuzuru and Tatsuki were held down in TES compared to Shoma.
I guess JSF will let Shoma go to both Junior World and WC this season.

But they were talking about spin and step sequence levels though. Plus, some of Uno's jumps look UR but didn't get called. It's obvious that they want to hold him up and dang the others including Yuzuru.

The technical panel (which decides the levels) is different from the judging panel (which decides the GOE and PCS). It is possible to have one strict and the other generous, although it doesnt really matter as long as the same standards of leniancy are applied across all skaters. In this case, I haven't reviewed Hanyu and Machidas skates/spins but I think the technical panel might have been a bit stingey :p

EDIT: stingey considering this is the #1 and #2 at Nationals ;)

To be honest I think international judges are going to hold back Shoma in PCS and GOE in seniors...They're doing the same thing with Satoko :(

Ah, I see. Looking at the scores, Shoma isn't really that close to Yuzuru or Tatsuki (if we compare with another competitive event, Russian ladies, where Evgenia was only a point or two from Liza and Elena). It doesn't seem like the Japanese Fed as the whole is pushing Shoma.

But the tech panel and the judges might've had a... disagreement? Judges wanted to hand out nice PCS and GOEs, and the tech panel went into MURDER MODE for the levels... except for Shoma. I guess the tech specialist likes him.

Spins' levels are something very hard to tell and I'm not a professional at all.
But as far as I can guess from my knowledge, he perhaps didn't have enough rotations for some positions.

I've only looked at his first two spins and compared to his GPF performance.
To me, it seems that the last position (pancake spin) of the 1st sit spin and the 2nd position (camel spin with upper body upward) of the 2nd spin didn't have 2 rotations. He had 3 rotations in GPF. (One way to get a level is to have a difficult position, and a position is counted when you have at least 2 rotations.)
Still, there are so many factors concerning levels, so I can be wrong, but just guessing!

Wish him the best of luck tomorrow:cheer:

Comparison of his performance at GPF and Nationals, knowing his condition, I'd say he did very well: http://youtu.be/mXv6NKGj65g
The step sequence look the same. :sarcasm: one is level 4, the other level 3. Oh well...
Best wishes to him tomorrow.

watched SP, very impressed, Yuzuru is definitely feeling the music, love that step sequence.love that embarrassment smile after final pose.
besides hitting all the notes in step sequence, this is one moment of suspension. I really love.
