Easy, he just forgot, and it was funny.
I also think Shoma's pretty introverted and doesn't really know what to do with his hands when these things happen. He also looks downright cornered when people start involving him in stuff -- case in point, he's pretty close to Sota, but when Sota did something like a vigorous shaking of Shoma's arms before he took the ice, Shoma was just like, "...Bro, what are you doing?" I can't find the link now but someone posted a vine of it.
Basically, Shoma just wants to stand on the podium, I feel like he's honestly not aware that he should shake hands. Also, I think the fact that Yuzuru straight-up went in for a hug kind of threw him off, because seconds before that, Shoma intended only to bow. But, well, Yuzuru's not a very shy creature HAHA

Yuzuru is friendly to everyone...even Kovtun.

His lutzes were fantabulous.It's a love triangle between the ltz and the 4S, Yuzu goal is to make them see that threesome is always the solution.Did they broke up/ have a fight again? I mean Yuzu and his Quad salchow

Anyway, congratz kid! A little pity that he won't go to 4CC but his health comes first of course. A healthy and happy Yuzu is all I wish for.
My eyes are watering because I have a cold and allergies. lots of allergies. This interview is so moving and in depth. and so very Yuzuru.
I love these three interactions with each other. Sota fangirling over Yuzuru and feeding Shoma cake(!) is making me fangirl Sota. and Shoma rolling his eyes at the both of them! Poor dignified Shoma stuck between two silly people.It's amusing to see the opposite reactions between Shoma and Sota regarding Yuzuru. I think this has something to do with Yuzuru and Shoma competing at juniors together, they technically aren't from different generations, they are only if you consider that they came for seniors in different times (even if Shoma isn't senior yet) So when Yuzuru acts all "Good job little one!" Shoma is like "Stop already, I'm just 3 years younger than you", while Sota almost faints.
^^^yeah you guys are probably right. Shoma just isn't very touchy-feely, and we have Yuzuru and Sota who are (this is reminding me of that fanart of Yuzuru glomping Machi who is trying to read). But everyone has different comfort zones. Like, Yuzuru doesn't like to hug Brian after a bad showing.

This morning newspaper confirmed about hanyu was having back pain yesterday but he did not want to expose it then because it would sound like excuse:/
Also machidas mother (??) said machida had back pains as well.
Hanyu's skating is so powerful and looks effortless, I forget how hard it is on the body, especially with bad falls. He never makes excuses, and just does his best in his condition ...even if it's with bandages on his head. It was a long year, rest well Hanyu!!

Perdita, thank you SO much for the translation. Yuzuru's interviews always impress me, his intelligence and his ability to express his thoughts really are something else. The part about CoC and the reason for his crying really moved me. It fascinates me how this young man can be both extremely strong and extremely delicate and sensitive. He really is fascinating.
I'm not sure how to put this, but whenever I root for an athlete, I kinda enjoy it because it gives me a reason for some effortless excitement. However, in Yuzuru's case I am just happy for him. He works so hard and he puts so much heart in his skating, that I just want the best for him, from the bottom of my heart.
I loved his FP today. He did look very tired, but I felt like he connected with the music better than he did earlier this season. His expressions were so great! He really loves this musicAnd the choreo and the music cuts are also really great. I hope to see a perfect version of this FP at Worlds. It really is exciting to be a Hanyu fan, because you never know what to expect. It really is a journey, but somehow I feel that he will conquer it all.
Oh, and I also really really like his "new" costume. Or rather, not the costume itself, but the way it fits Yuzu. At NHK I just thought it was very odd, but now, with Yuzu having regained his confidence, I think it makes him look very imposing, very majestic. I really love it (and I usually don't care that much about costumes).
AMAZING post!! I completely agree with everything you said, and I also really like the second POTO costume (especially the sleeves/gloves, no idea why, haha)
When I saw what happened with that spin I knew his back was acting up again. I didn't even need him to confirm it
Its no longer a question of whether he could or should cut back on shows (and maybe even all Senior B's in the future) but its a matter of he has to, that is if he wants his body to hold out till 2018.thank you, that was fun to watch lol the guys had such a laugh over the #'s

I knew that Yuzuru must definitely have been having back pain. Probably affected that first spin too, because he -never- loses his balance on a camel, so it's highly unlikely that he'll drop from the spin like that as well as do the A spin instead of the biellmann if he wasn't injured somewhere. Poor Machida. Hope he recovers well enough for his next competition, but for now I just want to see him have a very good rest.

One questions, when is Medalist on Ice? Any guesses in what exhibition number he will use?
I hope Yuzuru can have a good holiday for New Year with his family and then go rest/train in Canada...

I wonder if they'll ask Machida to join since Uno won Junior Nationals and is the silver medalist here also.

Glad he shed new light into what he was feeling when he had tears before the 6min warm-up in CoC, since that was the scene that stayed with me the most rather than the cry at K&C. Being a part of that live audience, it was heart-warming to know that I was a tiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiny part of what he could felt. I'm happy to know that he knows he is well loved.
I know the Japanese media is all pitching Shoma as the next young star who is ready to dethrone the defending champ. They know a good rivalry is good for TV ratings, and Shoma has a perfect story too, having a famous coach and was "discovered" by Mao. Love it that whenever a question regarding Shoma comes up, Hanyu always tries to remind everyone that hey! we are not that different in age! (I am very impressed with Shoma, having learned both 3A and 4T this year and delivering them both on a pressure-filled stage is not an easy task!)

I always forget they're only 3 years apart
To think...Yuzuru and Machida are from the same generation, and technically so are Yuzuru and Shoma 
It'll be fun to watch how Shoma and Shota both develop as Seniors and if Yuzuru can manage to fend off not only the current competition but also the crop of rising stars in Juniors

First, congratulations Yuzuru on winning the Japanese national title 3x in a row. Wow! Rest well and come back just as strong in the Worlds!

This is very true!! Does a price have to be paid to get either jumps? Yuzu's scores are already very high with mistakes, imagine how high he can achieve if he performs completely clean! No one can reach him if he skates 2 clean programs. Can't wait until Patrick Chan comes back next season because some real competition can start all over again and it's more interesting that way. :agree:
