Yuzuru Hanyu: 2014-15 Season

I guess I set a low expectation. Everything above my expectation is a bonus. I thought his practice was pretty good. I found his 4S more beautiful than his 4T. Did anyone else think his 4S is more beautiful?

The 4S is definitely looking more effortless, which is a big part of what makes jumps beautiful. I think he really had to bend his knee deeply to land some of those 4T, so they didn't look as lovely as the 4S (though they were still very pretty). It seems that his hardest jump is the one he's having less problems with right now (he never does things the easy way )

It's a hard choice :think: I haven't seen as many clean 4S as 4T but at the GPF I truly loved his salchow more than the toeloop but again it was probably because that was the first time he landed it so beautifully.

Apparently Denis Ten watched (maybe he was just happened to be at the rink at the same time) Hanyu-san's practice at the practice rink yesterday and the newspaper this morning are all over this rivalry. I guess the Japanese media loves the rivalry angle above anything...

Oh god, I thought you meant the newspaper's headline for Yuzuru and Ten's rivalry was called "Looking into each other's eyes" I was about to fall off of my chair laughing until I clicked on the link and saw Orser with Yuzuru :

I also clicked into the links expecting photos with Denis and yuzu looking into each other's eyes during practice session. And in the end it was borser I also thought it might be a private photo or something

Maybe that's because we subconsciously want to see a pictures of them together?

What surprised me a bit is that this is probably the first time I saw him being conservative about his results in competition. He used to be so bold in talking about his aims. Even in NHK, he said he aims the top. This time, he said he just wants to be himself...

I am not worrying about it. To me it is not a sign of lack of confidence. I think after firing up (through struggles) for most of the season, he now is calm and concentrates on what he can do. I honestly think this approach (including getting away from the media entirely in the past three months) is very natural for him at this time, and it is part of him getting mature. I love to see his fighting spirit in the competition, and I don’t mind if he does not show it in his words (somehow I prefer this way as he matures).

I also remember in TEAM BRIAN, Brian says Yuzu needs to learn not always put 100% in practices and “peak” before the competition. I think he did well in the practices, with good control of his body and his mind. He is in good shape. I feel good about him. 

Completely agree sonora. I feel that Yuzuru is being realistic about how he can perform given his condition, and that this shows a new maturity. It's wonderful to see him smiling and enjoying being out on the ice. Remember what BOrser said in Kiss & Cry at CoC? He said "the scores don't matter, what's important is that you went out there and skated. That's what you should be proud of". Being in Shanghai, after all he's been through is a triumph, no matter if he ends up on or off the podium.

Even if the mass media tends to love the rivalry angles please don’t think the most Japanese in general do like the same.
actually many of the fans don’t like(hate) that the media often take it up excessively and rub their favorites/people aiming for sensation. it is a kind of disrespectful toward both sides of them, being given unnecessary pressure by media and that annoying me/us.
They are being themselves. his/her only true rival should be him/herself (I am sure most athletes and singers etc think that that way as someone said it’s “no one”) and should not be put in such a situation to compare with someone indiscreetly.

looking at the postings, pics, exerpts, from practice, there seems to be a positive stoicism to a degree that I don't recall seeing in him before. mentally, he seems really there, accepting of himself, his limits and trying to figure out how to match those limits to a perfect performance. it seems to be a transformed Yuzuru because it was not so long ago he never seemed to accept limits. Since CoC, he has evolved into a more mature skater skating more strategically to what his body will permit. we all know that whatever happens, wherever he comes in, there are going to be beautiful moments. I hope he skates cleanly (as well I hope that for all of the skaters) and wins (Yuzu gold), but just seeing him well with himself after everything that has happened this season is enough to make my day.

I really like this comment! I have to agree with you too because Yuzu does seem more positive than usual and less pressuring to himself. All this means great positivity!

I think Yuzu is primarily competing againist himself, as usual, and he's climbing another wall with the tips of his fingernails. It's really a pure miracle he is in Shanghai after such terrible personal events. Plus, based on the scar lenght he reavealed the press, it seems they didn't use a laparoscopic approach . If this was true, the recovery after minimally invasive approach is even longer and harder than the one after laparoscopic surgery...

Hello!

I'm mostly a lurker in this forum and tonight I'm flying off (still packing, oops) to Shanghai to support Hanyu and other skaters.

I'm really looking forward to Hanyu's performance in Worlds after he fell in the very same venue. Fall seven times, rise eight times. Hopefully, he can skate with no regret and end this season satisfactorily. :dance:

Not bad, this 3A worries me a bit. He seems to struggle with air balance. Maybe he should do 4S in SP because it looks more stable
