Yuzuru Hanyu: 2015-16 Season

For the past few weeks I think we've all had a sense of the pressure Yuzuru feels he is under, but personally today seriously got to me. When he said 'I think I have to do everything...I have to do everything perfect' you could see he has so much on his mind. He doesn't go to skate like 'Oh well let's see what I can do' he goes out demanding perfection and anything less isn't enough. That's a heavy burden to carry and I feel bad :(

Especially when he did really well today!!!!! First place in the short with a beautiful performance! It's easy to say he shouldn't be so hard on himself, but I hope Brian can work with him to lessen the stress of being the best.

I expected that once Hanyu started putting together clean back to back skates that he would be haunted by the pressure of having to hold up to that perfection. It's in the natural evolution of his career that he needs to learn how to deal with that pressure. I'm glad that he's facing it now rather than at worlds.

Everything else aside, I have to admit I find this kind of funny - Only Yuzuru could be disappointed with a short program that scored over 100 points
I know right?!

How long did it take for him to break his WR from the Olympics? Over a year and a half?
So why the self-pressure now? Why the need to match his top score every time?

It's crazy to beat himself up after scoring over 100... or anytime he doesn't have a perfect skate... and I don't think it's healthy to think that way.

I'd say let's try some reverse psychology and tell him how much he sucks and that he should better get his act together and work on all his horrible shortcomings or otherwise he can kiss those 100+ scores goodbye if he keeps putting out such meager performances....... I'm just really afraid that he might agree :sarcasm:

You mean, bring in Miyahara's "hot" coach, Yamato? ;-D

He has been perfect in the past. So it's natural for him to expect himself to be perfect in future competitions. It would be weird if his goal for future competitions is to give imperfect performances. He wants to give perfect performances. That is a realistic goal and is certainly achievable. I think that serves as a good motivation even if he doesn't achieve his goal in every future competition. IMO, it only becomes a burden for him if the goal is unrealistic to achieve.

His English has gotten really good  Its really clear when he's not nervous or have to think of answers.

Thank you for the link, he talks about conditioning his body which is good. Doesn't seem like his ankle is bothering him too much, just that he's really tired (mentally?physically?).

I think he is physically tired. His competition schedule for the past two months has been pretty packed. His body probably feels the fatigue after all the training and competitions. I kinda assume more competitions means he is mentally more ready to compete.

Yes, of course.

But that's not my point: he is only human, and there will be times he is not perfect, and doesn't reach that goal... and on those occasions he shouldn't be so disappointed, or beat himself up over it....

I feel for Yuzuru. I really do. He scored +100, only. That sucks. :p
Yuzu love. You are still extraterrestrial. Don't you worry. :luv17:

I see he is disappointed that he didn't give a clean performance. But I don't sense he is beating himself over it. I thought he already moved on and will get ready for tomorrow's LP.

Once this competition is over he has some off time, competition wise. He's got that New Year's thing, a couple of shows, so that's fun stuff and hopefully that'll do him some good mentally, recharge those batteries, as well as the days in between those things where he can maybe just relax etc.. I hope he doesn't have too much media/off ice responsibilities in that time either.

I agree to be honest, I think he was disappointed in the moment but he's using it as an experience to learn from. I'm sure he will go into the free tomorrow feeling determined. The pressure is immense but Yuzu wants to dominate this sport, and knowing how intelligent he is, he will find a way to make a balance and perform up to his standards.

Level 3 across the board for 4T-3T!

Even the programs' hosts mentioned how great it is that we are able to see a different side of Hanyu-san with Brian in the K&C and how good is it that they can talk about it right afterwards. Just like Brian said, now he had scored 110 he thought repeating or besting that is the only option, and that just messes with his mentality even more. Good lesson learnt for the SP.

I can't foresee how he'll decide on the 4CC. Yes he might be tired, but also he might want to participate to stay in the competition mode?
