Well I was giving 5s to skaters lower in the standings if they maxed out their potential, like Julian Yee. Skaters know the mistakes they made so I think they can keep it in perspective. One thing I noticed live is crowd favorites are favorites for a reason. It's an extra skill, a PCS+ if you will.
That takes a clean skate and we know how difficult that was, not impossible of course, but like Yuzu he has not skated a clean free since last year world's.
Anyway, judges (and majority of skating fans/audiences) still have this 6.0 system mindset where unless you are leaps and bounds ahead in the short, skater with the clean and best FS should win the overall title.

OH YUZU. Apologizing in the post-competition interview for having a "really really bad" short program was...well, very Yuzu-like
I hope he knows it wasn't all that bad Well, he should have realized from the crowd reaction (but I will admit, I'll cheer no matter what he does). Maybe what he should apologize for is making his fans so worried we could barely eat or sleep the last two days jk~

LOL Yes, Shoma winning by a slim marging would be a bit anticlimatic for me, although it wouldn't diminish my joy in seeing a clean H&L

Also Nathan didn't either. Well, tbh Patrick not being there is more surprising but I thought Nathan was the new USFS media star?
It is a mindset that has been set up for decades, I understand it is hard to erase/overcome. In the 6.0 system, it is just veeeeryyy unlikely someone who failed/make a mistake in their free would win. And pops/stepout/turnout are not that costly in 6.0, but fall is death penalty. The reason why compulsory figures are removed was also because audiences just can't fathom if someone with poor(er) free skate would win over someone with better FS but less great CF. So maybe some of the current judges will tweak the scores a bit still based on this prejudice still, maybe.

Well this was one of the best birthday presents ever......and I've seen quite a few birthdays! When I woke up, I took a quick peek at this fanfest - figured it was the safest place to look. First words I saw were "glad he got the world title again". 
Absolutely THRILLED he's going into the Olympics as World Champion - I think this is the most "important" one in terms of being viewed as the top guy.

I am watching this MAD video again just because I can and because it is totally appropriate with what he's just done.
Can I also please mention that his current hair is perfect? Not too long and not too short. Yuzu, I know you got your hair cut around the time you went to Japan. Please keep it this way.

I agree. I don't think someone else winning would have decreased the pressure much for the reasons you mentioned especially if he puts the 4Lz into his programs next season. I think the most pressure is really coming from himself, the self-inflicted pressure of having this goal you have set for yourself that has driven everything you have done. I think he performs well with this type of pressure though. Ever since he was a kid, his impossible checklist has been: 1) medal at Sochi, 2) gold at Pyeongchang, 3) become a top skater, 4) break world records, 5) do something for the first time, 6) 4A in competition. Amazing to think how one by one these have fallen in the ~10 years since and now all that is left is 2) and 6).
EDIT: Ah I forgot! 7) become a legend. But I think he can check this one off too

There's some very dubious GOE/Levels/PCS scoring out there that were actually necessary to put top skaters more closely together and get the correct placements for specific competitions, based on their 'cleanliness'. Sometimes if IJS is followed religiously a skater of course could lose placements because his spins/steps/jump just isn't top quality because it's not their strongest assets, but when they stay on their feet, it feels wrong to put this particular skate under another one with a fall or more but better score potential and quality in their other elements, although, rationally, it shouldn't feel like that. So, yes, I can see it happening, even if it isn't an actual agreement but just a common perception between judges/tech specialists. I feel it became more common post-Chan domination era, in order to avoid controversies. and I actually believe that 'agreements' and so called 'conspiracies' don't happen as frequently as some may think, I prefer to believe in isolated terrible judging k, but that's me However, this is mostly based on observation and speculation.

I sorely regretted not trying to capture at least some of Chopin at Boston so I was prepared this time. I had to compromise between living in the moment and watching the performance vs getting footage though so I'll have to edit to only the good parts
