Yuzuru Hanyu: 2017-2018

Attempting to answer your first two questions:

1. I haven't reread all the rules since reconnecting with the sport and seems silly to do it right before they change everything. I know in order to repeat a jump, one has to be in combination or sequence. Judging by everyone's jump layouts, I'm guessing you can only repeat 2 jumps of the same type and rotation? I'm guessing this is why Hanyu does only one triple axel in spite of his flip and lutz being weaker? If you do 2 triple toes then pop a quad toe into a triple toe, what happens to the third toe?

The rule is in a FS you can only repeat two types of triple/quads and if you repeat a jump, at least one MUST be in combination or you get hit with a +REP penalty that eats up 30% of the repeated jump's BV. In Yuzuru's case, he usually repeats his 3A (which he tends to use in combination with 1Lo3S and 2T) and then one type of quad. In the 2015-2016 season he repeated the 4T, in the 2016-2017 season it was the 4S, this season he went back to repeating the 4T until he got injured. In order for him to do a 4-quad layout at the Olympics, though, and not use the 4Lo or 4Lz, he dropped a repeated 3A in order to repeat both 4S and 4T.

Now if, say, he repeats the 4T and pops a 4T into a 3T, he's now repeating the 3T instead, but usually his other 3T is already in combo so the only consequence is he loses a lot of BV with the pop but not with Zayaking (repeating more than the requisite number of triples/quads). If he were to pop a 4S into a 3S and a 4T into a 3T (the horror!) he usually has enough time to do a 3A1Lo2S and avoid repeating both of those.

He repeats the 3A because it's worth more than 3F and 3Lz and it's his best triple. Since he can do combos in the second half with that jump, which is factored the same as quads (full GOE factoring), his combos can be worth as much as quads.

2. My understanding of a combo/sequence is that the weight can't shift between the jumps/linking steps. I saw the clip of Hanyu doing a quad into a triple axel. Would this be considered a valid sequence?

4T3A is a valid combination but it'd be called as a sequence and be worth 70% of its combined BV exactly because of the changing of foot necessary to link both jumps. So it's not worth it.

Wait... you LOSE points for doing a sequence?!? I think it's silly that a 1/2 loop is valid but you can't stack jumps. Often times 1/2 loops looks like they're covering up a messy landing and seem barely more than a step anyway.

Well, I felt sad today for some reasons, so I just put this before I sleep

"I was not interested in figure skating before, but I was super impressed by Yuzuru Hanyu's performance in this Olympics! I could not watch it on time and I saw it on sports news program, I cried even though I had already known he won the gold medal lol! Thanks to him, I learned a name of the jump "Quad Salchow". I guess the jump is probably the special element to gain high points, but in Hanyu-kun's case, I felt like a word "expression" was a perfect match for his jumps. As a person expresses myself (in his job), I was so inspired that I felt like I want to start dancing."

Honestly, I don't know him other than the fact he is a member of "Love tune", Johnny's group. But he is clearly seeing Yuzuru's intention of executing the jumps.

Charisma...

I genuinely think that Yuzuru is one of the most charismatic people in sport, not just in skating. Even when he's doing interviews, or goofig around, something about him just captures your attention. I would describe him as 'magnetic'

Yes, it's that "it" factor I agree. Some have it and some don't. And it's not something that can be taught. Yuzu has that it factor for sure. He also has a really dynamic personality with many sides, and that's why he appeals to such a wide range of people all over the world IMO.

He’s ridiculously telegenic and quick-witted for sure. I think he gets frustrated with English in part because he can’t convey the wisecracks/puns that naturally bubble up in his brain. When it was first announced that his ice show was called “Continues with Wings” instead of the standard “____ on Ice,” I was like  Took me a while to figure out 羽生==“Born of feathers” —> “Continues with Wings.” And then there’s the random winky CiONTU hashtag with silent I,, his mind is one of a kind.

I fell down the YouTube rabbit hole of old interviews the last few weeks, having mostly been a casual fan who only watched his skating programs until recently, and there’s one where the host asks him, “Is it hard to portray a sexy character on ice when you’re abstinent due to your intense training regimen?” (My reaction, :palmf: “WTF kind of question is this?”). Yuzuru: “Not at all! It makes it easier because performing on ice is the only outlet I have!” Everyone: *laughs* (My reaction,). That is perfect grace and humor right there, when I wouldn’t blame a celebrity if they walked off the set at that line of questioning.

I also like his idea the name of his show doesn't include "on ice" or "ice", which I think is cool and unique :)

:noshake: I can't believe they asked him that! He probably came back with that class act of an answer without missing a beat, too. Poor guy!

Seriously? Yikes! 😳 First off what would this reporter know about Yuzuru’s abstinence. That’s a huge assumption to make and a horrible question. I too would not have blamed Yuzuru or any other celebrity for that matter for immediately ending the interview after such an intrusive question.

Regarding why some make it while some don’t, I agree. Charisma is a huge part of why some people are so popular while others who may be considered just as talented are not. I know it’s shallow, but looks are key too. If the person isn’t physically attractive they’re not likely to have as much success as someone who is attractive. I think Yuzuru has both looks and charisma in spades.

Also, I think whoever said he’s magnetic are correct. There is something about him that draws you in whether skating or otherwise. He’s definitely one of the most engaging athletes in figure skating.

Hahaha, he is clever...

And do you have a video? I actually wanna see his face when they asked the question... he is very witty...

This is going to sound weird, and normally you would never catch me talking about aura and such, but Yuzuru radiates a very special energy that is just captivating. I'm obviously biased, and I apologize to the other skaters, but when Yuzu is at the rink and on the ice my eyes go straight to him and I don't really notice the others. There's something about his movements that I find absolutely captivating. I'm usually torn between just wanting to sit and watch him and absorb everything I see during practice, or actively just recording his every single move so that I can save it and go back and rewatch it.

Despite what some say - calling him an alien or even godly - I feel like it's his human side that people connect with very easily. What he shows on the ice, and even his journey as an athlete, is something people can relate to (perhaps not directly as I'm sure we're not all top-class skaters) and it's something that comes across very strong when I see him. It makes him really likable and it at times it feels oddly personal when you watch him skate, makes it easy to become invested. To add on top of that is his amazing technical ability, excellent work ethic, and intelligence and you just have someone extremely marketable and charismatic without feeling forced or in your face.

You can always just tell he's at home on the ice, so natural on it that he's almost a part of it. I find it quite funny that he's so fluid, and moves with such ease, on ice, and is a little bit clumsy by contrast on dry land :rofl2: He really is quite human.

The urge to film favorite skaters to keep the memory is always strong, but man, I've regretted it every time I've done it. It's much more special to experience it without the barrier of your phone and take that memory with you. Even the tiniest things, the nuances which end up being so special, stick out in the mind much better that way.

Where is this from? I like his answer if people let their imagination run wild they can equate that sexiness to his need. lol.

Yeah, my rule is record at practice, no filming during competition. For competitions I know they’ll be shown on TV and someone will record it. It’s the stuff that doesn’t make it to streams/TV that I try to film as otherwise I can’t go back to it (I’m still sad that I didn’t actually hit record at the end of the Helsinki gala where he kept missing his axels). During competition I just try to be present - but I find I get pretty nervous watching him skate so I get a different type of anticipation/excitement in the moment and can’t enjoy his skates the way I do after the fact when I can just appreciate them for their beauty when I already know the results.
