Yuzuru Hanyu: 2017-2018

I'm glad you were able to be there for his record breaking SP. I hope your good memory of that will override the memory of the Free skate.

I have great memories of the SP :)

Even though the FS was worst than Boston's, I think because the expectations were set early on I really wasn't that shocked by the free skate.

Kozuka
"I think there is no need to worry about."
"He is a type of person who "attacks". He is stronger when he attacks, and keep attacking makes him calmer."

In one of the news I saw, Kozuka said he thought Yuzuru may have tried 4Lz and popped in the beginning. Of course, truth is unknown unless someone asks Yuzuru about it  (I still think he tried 3Lz though)

Truth is unknown about the lutz, but can I just say how odd and awkward Yuzu looked forcing himself to do 3lz and 3lo during practice? I really do think he was trying to fit the 3lz and 3lo into the pacing of his program while keeping the rhythm he had with the quads. The set up looked weird and he visibly had to check out of the rotation to do the triples during practice. Maybe this was part of the problem, I think if he attempted a layout similar to 2015/2016 I think he would've done better, but what's done is done.

Does anyone know the connotations of "senshu", like Hanyu-senshu? I know that it means "player", but I want to know what Japanese speakers feel when they hear this word. Does it sound more respectful than "san"? Or does it sound standard like President X, Chairman Y, etc.?

(family name)-Senshu is the correct way to address an athlete. The Media will always address him as -Senshu. Those familiar with him might not address him with an honorific, or they might call him Yuzu or Hanyu-kun

Thank you for your report! I agree with your opinion. SEIMI is originally edited for the program of 2 quads in the first part, Yuzuru and the editor worked on again and again to adjust the rhythm of the music to the timing of those jumps, it must have been difficult especially for a skater like him who really listens to the music when he performs.

Yuzuru arrived in Toronto on September 24. He has been practicing only one 4Lo a day, but the jump is getting better.

"I did SP yesterday, and I don't know if all our team members felt this way, but the audience must have nearly felt "Salchow is good enough"".

When Hanyu talked in a frank tone, laughter came out among reporters.

"If I'll be able to get this score steadily with 4S (in SP), I could put more emphasis on LP. It's vexing I had a little bit of that feeling in myself. But after ending (LP or the competition) like this, I thought I would never be able to perform like myself unless challenging."

And this writer says Yuzuru had tearful eyes during the interview, but as he continued talking he became calm.

Does this mean he might keep the 4S for now in the SP (at least for COR) so he only has to train the 4Lo for the FS, which might help with not overburdening the knee?

Seems like Yuzu is keeping his options open and will try to do the hardest layout that his body will allow?
I really want to see a 4Lz some time soon...but only if his legs are not in danger.

He didn't say his future plan exactly, but it depends on his knee condition IMO. But to see how he was frustrated at not showing 4Lo in ACI and kept saying he liked challenging, I guess he will do 4Lo in SP in this season if he is healthy.

I guess training only one 4Lo a day will help for now to keep the strain from the knee so it doesn't start hurting again. He was doing 4Lo in both programs last season with no issues but this time he is training the 4Lz as well; I imagine the strain on the right knee became heavier and so now they have to scale back a bit. I'm sure it's all preventative at this point because that knee is damn important. :)

As for the 4Lz, well, that he's been succeeding in it is kind of obvious if he was planning on adding it to his layout this season. I'm sure he wouldn't add it if he could barely land it. Pity we can't know its success rate outside AND within program runthroughs in practice, though.

Only in Japan will they spend 25 minutes talking about Jump layouts of Yuzu, Shoma and Nathan, and everyone knows, more or less, what they are talking about on a nation-wide talk show. It's nice seeing Honda-san as well.
The two comedians on the far right, "Sandwich Man" are my brother's favorite Japanese comedians.

I hope so.

Actually I wish he would ditch the 4L entirely, especially if he has the 4Lz. He just showed he can break the SP WR with the "humble" 4S, and it's a reliable "money" jump for him. Whereas (to me) 4L continues to look risky and inconsistent. He also never gets the same kind of speed and flow on exit, that he gets from his other big jumps - and that's something that counts towards GoE. (I'm not sure it's even possible with a loop jump).

He needs the 4Lo in the FS, though, in order to be able to do 5 quads with two 3As. In the SP, I guess it's only necessary if the younger guys start approaching too much with their SP scores. Thing is, he can't go much further in TES in the SP than what he got at ACI. He was already less than a point off his max TES with the 4S. Also, his 4Lo in the SP can look gorgeous. Case in point: Worlds SP 4Lo, just as good as his 4S but sadly not graded the same. But if overtraining the 4Lo puts strain on his knee, I'd rather he use it only on the FS for now.

His 4S looks incredibly strong this season. Can't remember him to pop that jump either in practice, run-through or competition. He never got higher GOE for 4S (+3,00) and 4S+3T (+2,80) before and with the left-foot-take-off it relieves his right knee.

He would be mad to replace it by 4Lo in his SP. The 4Lo would increase the BV by just 1.5 points, which he can lose very easily in GOE - not to mention, if he pops that jump and messes up the rest of the programme because of that.

He really should use his rock solid 4S - I don't think that he would score less than 105 points with that layout (even if he makes a mistake).
In the unlikely case that someone else is completely escalating and taking the lead after the short, he shouldn't be able to beat Yuzuru by more than a point (or two) and that is everything but not a comfortable cushion for the free. Yuzu managed to close a gap of +10 points in Helsinki.

A Yuzuru Hanyu in front is dangerous - a Yuzuru Hanyu coming from behind is terrifying (but only, if the gap is not too big - so no 4Lo pls ). He can do the 4Lz, if he thinks it's necessary to defend his world record (I doubt it).
