Yuzuru Hanyu: 2017-2018

Thank you for the link, I really enjoyed it. To see his reactions and thoughts during competitions was so encouraging. I'm experiencing some dark moments right now but I will try to go "beyond myself" like he aims all the time. This is how a true champion affects peoples hearts. As it is his fanfest I dare to say what I always think but keep it to myself to not hurt anyone. But, here we go: In his presence no one else deserves the olympic title, it's that simple.

P.S. The narrator's voice resembles Miyano Mamoru's voice, is it him?

I have prepared myself well for any outcome, from WD to Gold medal :palmf:

WOW seeing the letter "WD" scared me a little but whatever ease our hearts right :dbana:

But watching the recent documentary makes me feel so inferior to Yuzuru. He just lost Rostelecom cup but he is so chill and the rise of the youngsters makes him more eager to challenge rather than scared him. like can I interview his mom how to produce such a chill child like that? Here he is, media putting pressure on a repeat gold medal and started the season not strong but he's just there sipping coke and continue analyzing his skate. That is the reason why he is a world top athlete and I'm not.... I sulk for weeks when I don't get the grade I want in University

The interview taken on the day after ACI, around 33:40.

"I felt something wrong on my knee 10 days ago, and as soon as I found it out, I stopped training. But still, the pain got growing gradually. Recovering from that injury (=the injury on the knee in 2013) prevented me from skating properly for almost 2 months and a half. The most important thing is to participate in the Olympics, I can never put myself in the risky situation that leads to the uncertainty (for the Olympics). I felt like being a coward a little, umm, there was part of me that I became coward a little."

"I think I have started doing the almost maximum (layout?), in that sense, I really have to consider the burden on my body. It's not about the level anymore that I get injured because of carelessness, I recognized again that there was something I could hardly avoid."

"A small part of me wondered if I could allow myself to do that (=watering down the layout of the program). But as a way to have the concentration in the past, I think doing the difficult things with full force was the biggest motivation for me. I realized again that I had to challenge myself after all, I felt like God told me that again."

If its any consolation to you, I recall Yuzuru used to be nervous with media presence.

When he first went training with Orser(2012/2013), with cameras present at the rink - Orser told Yuzuru "Dont be bothered abt them(the media)" and continued on with training instructions. Yuzuru was uncomfortable media was present while he is training.
By now, few years later, with OG and World titles under his belt, he would be used to the media attention.

So, Yuzu wasnt so chill before. He just learnt to deal with it/got used to it.

(After drinking Coke lol)

"Well, umm, it is good, I am very satisfied looking at this layout. (giggling) I am glad."

"It's fun to be able to compete at this kind of level. I really didn't expect this (his layout? the level of Men's skating?) was going to be like this, not this far (laughs). (interviewer: When you were a child, you were saying that you wanted to do quintuple jump.) I'm almost there, only one more rotation. I'm saying "one rotation" but that one rotation is hard."

"If I could skate very decently in the layout of the last year, I would win almost on average (through this season). And maybe, without doing 4Lz, SP would be more stable and I would be able to keep staying in 2nd or 1st place almost all this season, with no worries. Umm, but still, I thought that was not good. To skate thinking and thinking, holding back something, is out of my line."

"Nathan-senshu will be improving of course. PCS of other skaters will be getting higher and higher for sure, but my PCS is almost at maximum and I can not raise it even if I try. Therefore, the gap is going to be smaller and I really thought I had to compete in BV to some extent."

"Finally...finally I came to be able to compete in BV, that is big (improvement). I think this is the start line."

I was ashamed of my life watching his old documentaries some years ago, and he was still 17 and I was 3* already

*whispers* We're the same then. Such spectacular young man! I sound old *cough*

Exactly, that attitude of overcoming his shortcomings, he has so many demons but he defeated them one by one. The thing with Yuzuru is that, he is a normal skater as in he never really start big when he was Junior, he continuously chasing others. But with his world record performance one after another he just keep proving that anything is possible. Often we work toward a goal that seems hazy and ended up thinking "well I just got close as possible to that goal then, the goal itself is unreachable" but Yuzuru kept knocking down his goal one after another. Goal for him is an obstacles rather than a destination.

Now I'm a bit confused. Did he start practicing on ice in December or only in January?

JSF said he is back on ice on Dec 16.
The woman on twitter saw him on ice somewhere in mid Dec.
Javi said he is back in the second half od Dec.

I guess we will never know for sure. Probably program meant he started full schedule training in Jan.

Sorry, I re-watched the video and I fixed a part of the translation, bolded part!

It's really interesting to read his reasoning behind the new layout. I was one of the people who, like BOrser, thought he didn't need it at all to win (I still think so to a certain extent) but now I understand why: not only he needs a challenge to perform well, but he knows that his PCS can't really get any higher when he performs well, while Nathan and Shoma do have room for improvement, so he needs to act on TES. It makes sense.

Ganbatte Yuzu!

Yuzu resumed training a week ago:

Translation from Iron Klaus on twitter:
"He started training around a week ago. I can't give you any details at this point. He has put effort into this without getting discouraged and we thank those who supported him. He is an athlete who can concentrate so I'd like him to get back into full form."

"#Kobayashi also clarifies that the media saying he was back training on Dec. 16 isn't accurate. At this point he was back "on the ice" but it wasn't exactly training yet."

Thank you for posting!

The way Kobayashi said "I can't give you any details at this point." in Japanese doesn't mean they don't know the details, they know it but they don't want to tell now, and I think it is a good decision to avoid the media confusion. (I want to know the details though, haha. But I know I have to be patient!)

Thanks for the article!
The tone of the article is very secretive:cool14:.
But I guess this indicate that Yuzuru really waited until the injury is healed for sure. and now it's about the time he had until Olympic *biting nails*
I wonder how much time did he had to train back in World 2015... a week before competition? I heard it wasn't long and that's why he is unstable... but his performance is still quite solid, all things considered.

He had just 3 days of training before GPF 14 and 10 days of training before WC 15 If I remember well.

3 days before GPF 2014 😱! Or do you mean NHK 2014? He should’ve had about two weeks between the two comps.

I remember he took some time after NHK to recover ?? and trained according to the schedule Brian left him ?
