Yuzuru Hanyu: 2017-2018

https://twitter.com/figureskate_bot/status/968824670446170113 Lots of magazines are popping up with Yuzu's picture on it. I especially like this one.

This has been my desktop background since his win. Everyone in the office notices it and is like :palmf: Sometimes I get embarrassed but I'll keep it, why am I supposed to have pictures of Richard Feynman or Einstein all the time? What's with these stereotypes about scientists among scientists themselves? :curse:

That picture along with the *third picture in here https://www.pixpo.net/others/K_006J3IwS.html are my two favorite photos from the whole olympics, I think they show Yuzuru's happiness and gratefulness the best (I also love any photo of Yuzuru's reaction after finishing his LP, that face was something else :yes2:)

I think he can not take a bad picture, he looks so good, sweet and happy in those ones...

Since Yuzuru hsa not announced public appearance, do you guys think he already when to see the doctor?

My guess is that the announcement will be made very late if he withdraws...:slink:

This whole winning the Olympics only 20% recovered is just insane. He’s a mind over matter ninja. I’m not sure if the translation is identical in Japanese but the characters for ninja in Chinese literally mean “one who withstands the pain of a knife in the heart.”

I think he really doesn’t want to go to worlds but feels bad since the federation named him to the team and it would disappoint fans who bought tickets on that premise and Japan will probably lose their third spot without him. So no official announcement but dropping plenty of hints in the media to prepare people for withdrawal. If he were really thinking of going, he wouldn’t publicly reveal that he is not recovered and give competitors that knowledge. Team Hanyu played the mystery box strategy perfectly for the Olympics, and he wouldn’t let go of the asymmetrical information edge easily.

He probably already gave Mura the heads up since they're close and will officially announce it in a week or two. I just don't see him going with his ankle in its current condition and he must be so worn out mentally... I want him to celebrate with his family and enjoy his time back home

That is my guess, too. It's rare he talks about his injury this much. I forgot the rule of how to get 3 spots for WC but if Shoma was able to be on the podium, would it be enough for 3 spots? (I remember top two skaters from a country have to be finished in 13th place)

The rule is that the top 2 skaters from a country have to have finishes that add up to 13 or less. Depending on Shoma's placement, Keiji and Mura would have to place at least 12th place to keep the 3 spots. (1+12 =13, 2+11=13, 3+10=13). This will be a tough job for Keiji and Mura who finished 19th and 16th respectively at their last Worlds appearances. Granted the field will be depleted of the usual top contenders like Patrick or Javier, but there is still plenty of competition and Keiji and Mura will have to skate lights out to stand a chance. Without Yuzuru, Japan must be prepared to lose a men's spot at least for one season, until Yuzuru is well enough to regain that spot again next season.

That's going to be an issue since Worlds will be in Japan next year, they will try to keep those spots for their event at home. I hope that with the less packed field they can get a good placement. But at least they have a very good chance of getting their ladies' spot back

The third spot is at least at risk. Keiji Tanaka finished 18th at Olympics, five withdrawals above him announced (Javi, Patrick, Adam, Jorik, Junhwan) plus Yuzu would move him up to 12, which adds up to 13 if Shoma is first. But Jason Brown will probably be above Keiji so that is one more slot down. Of course if he or Takahito Mura can skate close to their PB the third spot should be safe, just not sure the likelihood of that is high. Also puts a lot of pressure on Shoma to win to give the other men slightly more margin for error. Since Japan has 2019 worlds JSF probably wants that third spot more than normal and may be pressuring Yuzuru to keep it safe, who knows. He seemed somewhat resigned when asked about worlds, like “the federation named me to the team, so we’ll see how I’m feeling then.” He obviously a. Does not want to go given the condition of his ankle and b. Feels a lot of responsibility that he should go for the sake of his country. All this letting the media in on his injury status and how he wagered his skating career for the Olympics is publicity to let people know he’s not just skipping worlds to “selfishly” go on vacation to enjoy his gold medal without regard for his country, even though he has every right to do so.

Yeah, he already mentioned in every interview that he cannot jump without pain if he is not taking painkillers. Hard to imagine him going forward with Worlds.

Even though there was the media rush, he only chose to do interviews/press conferences, and he has not been on any variety shows (Japanese athletes frequent these shows very very often, whether they are sports related or not, I like watching them :)). Since he must be the most coveted guest now (has been since Sochi), I believe he specifically set out rules for TV appearances and such. Selfishly I would love to seem him go have fun on these shows, but I know he has his principles he would like to follow. (I had thought if he got gold in Pyeongchang he might started going, but maybe not)

He may feel the responsibility to keep the 3 spots, but I think just like the team event, even though he held his national pride in high regards, I think he will choose to take care of himself first.
