Yuzuru Hanyu: 2021-22

You found it! Excellent. Someone had interpreted his comments which is him now feeling a reward even though the jump was under-rotated. His reaction is so great to see.
It was not fully rotated but on the slow-down I saw it was lacking less than ¼ rotation, which can be called by a q. A < call lowers the base value by 20% while a q (which is an underrotation) doesn't affect the base value but gets a -2 deduction in GOEs. As a whole there's not much difference if the jump is landed but in the case of a fall, a q jump gets the same score as a fully rotated element, that is half the jump's base value, while a < jump with a fall gets only 40% of the jump's base value. So, I think the correct score should have been 6.25 instead of 5. But his invalid sit spin (like many other skaters') was not invalidated, maybe because his spins are usually so perfect yet rarely scored as such? Here he didn't do it properly because he was just reinjured. As a whole the scoring was a real mess and I would like to know who really should have had which medals.

I just came across this a few minutes ago and immediately thought of you. It's from Eurosport. Wait until it loads, as its on Google drive. Look up at the tech box right after Yuzu attempts the 4A. I'm not going to tell you ahead of time what is there. Just watch. Then we'll talk.

Thank you! Unfortunately I'm not registered with Google. Which stream is it?
On the stream I saw it, it was yellow indeed which was obviously wrong as there was a fall. It had to be red. I didn't think immediately about watching the total score as 4A was the first element.
There are many breakdowns and I think one can figure out well.
Anyway it didn't change a lot. The jump couldn't be ratified and the < call didn't prevent it from being certified.

What was in the tech score box after he jumped was 6.25. But somewhere along the way they changed it. Now do you understand why I thought of you? Read your other post to me before this one. Had it been a 'q' it would be 6.25 but with < it became 5.00. Of course it doesn't change to ratification, but what I was thinking about was the need for technology to handle situations where human eyes can fail to judge accurately. Do we know why it was changed from q to < ? No.

Years ago, human eyes would judge whether a ball in a tennis match was on the line, in, or out. Fortunately that hasn't been the case for many years and it's completely objective now. Instant replays with technology clearly show where the ball landed and now there is no need for heated disputes as there once was between player and judge.

I find skating rather annoying knowing it isn't keeping pace with other sports in this area. I recall Johnny Weir mentioning that judges got so accustomed to Vincent Zhou under-rotating his jumps that sometimes they would give him a 'q' call simply because they didn't have a decent angle to view it. So it stands to reason someone would ask of Yuzu's case: why move from a 'q' to a < ? What are they using to view a landing and how many angles do they have? It is the method of judging a landing that is of concern.

I remember that in his All-Japan Nationals attempt last December 26th the 4A was underrotated with a bit less than ½ rotation missing so the call should have been < but it was visible only from two of the angles I saw. From the judges viewpoint it looked like a real half turn was missing so the downgrade was understandable though undeserved.
Here as the landing angle was different from the judges viewpoint I understand less why they called it < and I wonder if it wasn't for humiliation? They could really see it was q at worst. There are people among TP and judges who hate him and I'm not being paranoid. This being said, by virtue of focusing on diminishing his 4A they failed to see an invalid spin so in the end...
With earlier automated ball position assessment in tennis we would have missed some of John McEnroe's best moments. :ROFLMAO: But I do long the time when TP (if they're maintained) and judges (I hope they will remain) will have a number of measured parameters to help them. I think at least 90% of BVs and GOEs at least can be computed and 60 to 90% of PCs too, and these elements are nowadays frequent objects of error or politicking.

I was so busy laughing, I forgot to check if John was right and the judge was wrong. I think the judge was wrong. The ball did hit the line, which is what John is yelling about.

For those who are worried about the purpose of the Press Conference of Yuzu on 14th. JOC said it is to be held because so many requests came from the media wanting to ask questions to Yuzu directly and they have to have a big enough venue to handle those reporters and cameramen. It is not something that Yuzuru has asked such occasion to make an announcement from himself( meaning it is not going to be a big special announcement coming from him)

As it is on Valentine's day, some have fancied he may have an announcement of an engagement.:ROFLMAO:
This being said, I expect he will tell us if he means to skate at Gala.
For Worlds, I think he will see how is his ankle once he's back in Sendai (is there quarantine? If there is, can he see a doctor during quarantine?)
Then if he thinks he has to withdraw he will have to convince JSF. It had been difficult in 2018 with a very serious injury but it might be easier this year because JSF seem to value more Yuma and Shoma.

Here's a video of the press conference with English simultaneous translation.

Edit: there are inaccuracies in the translation. Simultaneous translation is always very difficult.
A comment says:
"I want to clarify something: many things were slightly changed by the interpreter, but we cannot blame her for that. Yuzuru's Japanese is VERY fast, elegant and detailed, as well as subtle but precise. Conveying this through a written translation is quite the task already, but doing so as an interpreter is nearly impossible. I am a professional translator and didn't want to become an interpreter because of how stressing and hard it is, especially when it comes to simultaneous interpretation. She did her absolute best, so let's be nice in the comments please."

I swear I am not going outside this forum. Other forums are just bad for my heart and temper.
Yeah I should be clever and do the same. I'm tired of certain posters just dragging him down all the time in all threads (you probably know ho I mean, but I don't want to call names)

Along with the doping mess I wonder who will interest me in figure skating if Yuzuru takes a break or retires...

He confirmed that he will skate at the Gala although it is medically not sound.
At this morning practice he skated twice to Phantom of the Opera and hinted that he may skate to this program at the Gala.
