Hopefully that's the case ... I hope this SP performance of his today was just a bad start to the season rather than something continuing. I'm really biased towards him, but honestly today's performance wasn't too great.

This was definitely a change from edgy Parisienne Walkways from last season, which screamed SPUNK (but again, it just wasn't just quite there yet for me).

It might be my bias showing though, but Mao skated this before, and Mao immortalised this piece for me. But knowing Yuzu, he's going to the free with such determination and do very well.

Mao's Ballade is definitely superior. One of her greatest programs.

I agree Yuzuru is still getting a boost but hell, I'd much rather he win than Kovtun.

How on earth did Kovtun get 41+ for PCS and Hanyu get 44+ while Yan get 39? Yan has the best skating skills and he performed light out. I just don't get it.

Well, Hanyu was never much an early season skater. He is lucky that those PCS kept him in the race.

I think I finally got what bugs me about Kovtun. He's an interior skater. He seems to be so enclosed in his own little bubble when he skates, that watching him perform feels like an intrusion. And all the sturm und drang angstfest programs just reinforce this. I'd force him to skate a souffle program--something really light and airy and somewhat sweet that would force him to project OUT more.

But hey, that's just me. YMMV and all that jazz...

Byhenko of Israel has the second highest TES, just 0.70 lower than Kovtun.

Well that was interesting, how they score the Olympic Gold Medalist when he is making mistakes. But I'm so thankful that we don't have to see that horrible PW programme anymore. The new SP of Yuzuru is much better and more beautiful, imho. Yuzuru has to be careful, the other japanese men won't gift him the national champion title, but SP is SP and the LP is still to come.

I didnt watch but looking at Protocols alone I wonder how Han Yan got -GOE for all three jump passes and wound up in 3rd. Seriously...his highest GOE was -1. IMO that deserves a in my book.

Doesn't help his jumps aren't exactly light and airy. They are just not pretty to look at. But props for 2 quads.

Hmm havn't seen any program I like so far in both ladies and men.....not good. All that Bolero! Arghh i blame you Carolina Kostner! All POTO, Bolero deserves automatic -3 points PCS.

Kovtun's choreography other than beginning and ending was so generic and unmusical... it is almost as bad as a Sotnikova program.... So of course he deserve embeded Russian high PCS duh!

Dorbush's choreography and interpretation is above everyone. Though Han Yan is strong in his jump elements (not today), yeah I think he got a little bit of home bonus here.

Chinese federation please claim some refund from Lori, as Kostner deserves last year.

Unfortunately "light and airy" might not be possible for him since he has no grace or elegance whatsoever.

I'm still here for the insane scoring. Yuzuru got a full 3.00 GOE for his 3A.

Yuzuru skated beautifully (love Mark Hanretty's comments about the improvement in Yuzuru's skating skills) but didn't jump well. I have always thought that quad in the second half is the "danger point" in that program, and when he popped it I felt apprehensive for the coming jump combination. Wishing him a better performance tomorrow. I'm sure he's mentally kicking himself right now.
