Yup. I'd HOPED Hanyu would do super well right away...but I was actually expecting him to have some problems.
He has always followed an arch in his skating every year.
But he's lucky none of the top competitors did very well today.
Do better tomorrow everyone!
I liked the Chopin program a lot! --But I think Hanyu was over-scored...or possibly Han-yan was underscored?
I thought Han-yan's skating skills and interpretation should have been marked higher.

It was clearly the best 3A, and he had transition in to jump, and out of jump

Hmm havn't seen any program I like so far in both ladies and men.....not good. All that Bolero! Arghh i blame you Carolina Kostner! All POTO, Bolero deserves automatic -3 points PCS.

Kovtun's choreography other than beginning and ending was so generic and unmusical... it is almost as bad as a Sotnikova program.... So of course he deserve embeded Russian high PCS duh!

Please don't start that. Yuzuru was scored generously as well, and I'm much more a fan of his than Kovtun's.

Mao's Ballade is definitely superior. One of her greatest programs.

Yes to it being one of her best. Girl was born to skate to Chopin, so it's kind of really difficult to shake off the image of her skating Ballade now that Hanyuu is skating it.

I'm more concerned with how much PCS cushion the top 3 men have here. I think Dornbush deserves better (like 3rd, really).

And now that JP TV coverage has ended I shall head out and grab some late dinner and pay my electric bill lol All the best to the skaters for tomorrow's FS!

WOW. Those spread eagle bookends must be worth an extra bonus GOE, making this jump meriting +4 GOE if landed well.

eta. Ooops. His did land the 3A well, didn't he? Otherwise the exit spread eagle wouldn't have been there.

Hanyu received +3 GOE for his 3A. I don't recall anytime this has ever happen.

Dorbush's choreography and interpretation is above everyone. Though Han Yan is strong in his jump elements (not today), yeah I think he got a little bit of home bonus here.

Chinese federation please claim some refund from Lori, as Kostner deserves last year.

It is not "embedded Russian high PCS", it is the inflated PCS that the #1 skater from every strong federation gets, Russian or otherwise. Unfortunately, at this moment, Kovtun is regarded as #1 in Russia, although I hope that will change next season...

Hanyu is finally getting for what he is able to do with 3A what he deserves to get. LAst season many times judges was not rewarding him with all this entrances on GOE comparing to others. Here you had 3A straight from transition, straight to transition on landing

That's true. I just think it's a big deal. The 3A isn't what's ticking me off about his score (which reeeeally shouldn't be above an 80).

I edited my post when I realized I must have mixed up my memories of his jump landings since the exiting spreading eagle couldn't have been there without a good landing.
