2014 Cup of China Mens Short Program 11/07

Just watched Nam's and I'm not sure what to think  Its really forgettable/empty and holy cow was he going really slow. If it looked that slow on camera, imagine seeing it live? It looks like he barely has any ice coverage... But good for him for being consistent, something we rarely see in the Men's these days. I'm optimistic that Orser can fix it since speed can be taught unlike consistency :ohwell:

Kovtun...well its an improvement I guess. Congrats on the 2 quads though! Quite an amazing feat. Makes me wonder if Javier will put the 2nd quad back into his short later in the season.

:points: For Misha (an extra point for Hanyu for stressing everyone out because of their predictions )

Hanyu has improved a lot, performance and posture wise, and his skating skills are much better (although he's still below Han Yan at the moment). I'm not too worried about his performance today, maybe it was a slow start.
This program will be beautiful once he manages to land all of his planned jumps. :)

Yeah Nam..good kid but I guess that's why his pcs are pretty low.

I so agree.

Overall mens SP is a bit of a disappointment...but epic moment for me is Misha landed his enemy 3A! Did you guys see his face right after his SP performance? Almost crying with joy. And his father's 'soooo-proud-of-you-my-son!' face?

Well done, Ricky, except the combo!! :party2: But the score was lower than I expected...Would hit at least 80 I thought.
I feel really bad for Bychenko. I know he has some issues concerning overall skating, but he was the only one who went clean in jump-wise. He should have won TES at least. These two could have been placed one higher, or even two if only they do have a strong back-up from their own federation, me believe. :ohwell:

A bit OT, but why did Han skate SP without his brown best that he wore during 6min warm-up? He looked so handsome, more sophisticated with it on!

He did really great. I liked his performance very much. :agree:

So good to see Misha has improved his skating so much.

Ge, Brown, and Hanyu are three widely beloved and differently talented skaters whose skating I found not quite at par with some of the extreme accolades but are improving every year to live up to their fans' claims. Talents plus continued effort to improve usually take a person very very far.

I so agree, SkateFiguring! That's what I would always love to see from these talented/elite skaters every season.

I have one small favor to ask Ricky and his coach Tammy-san. Is it possible to change his opening pose a bit, please? For some reason, his opening pose and the way he looks at judges always makes me deadly nervous, I have to hold my breath and pesimistic side of me whispering he may pop his opening 4S. A deja vu from the last season, maybe. More freely, uplifting and cheerful pose with a smile would be much appreciated and preferred by me. :)

I was expecting to see many things this morning, anyone complaining about yuzurus 3A of all things was not one of them. Glad he finally getting 3A scores he deserves  I had a feeling hed finally get it. Am mad at the camera angle, maybe they thought hed go lengthwise like before.
Any complaint pf overscoring is moot compared to the other podiumers. Because a)kovtun and b)ppl acting like hanyan didnt make jumping mistakes too, hes less than a point ahead tech wise, and while he deserves higher ss at this competition, he doesnt deserve higher int or choreo imo.
Also, Im just glad Yuzuru stayed on his feet, is you stay on your feet your pcs shouldnt be affected too much by tech.

I think overall placement is somewhat good. I mean if Hanyu PCS should go lower then Kovtun also. Han Yan PCS I think is good as it is. But clearly Hanyu program besides jumps as a whole piece is the best in this competition.

I agree....I'm not a Hanyu fan yet but just the beginning of his short would have deserved the pcs that he got ...spread eagle, triple axel, spread eagle. I was impressed.

I'm like the Eurosport guy who preferred Chan's (and Dai) skating skills but Hanyu has improved in that area. Just smooth. His posture also looks better and that's one of the reason I didn't always enjoy watching him. This will be the first time I will watch his program more than once...mistakes and all.

Hanyu had a gorgeous 3A. It was his other jumps that were problematic. Downgrading the 4T cost points against those with high BV. But I had thought his missing the combo would cost him the entire element, like Zayaking invalidating an entire combo. However, he still got credit for the 3Lz placing him in second in this mess of underperformances from the top competitors.

eta. Isn't everybody glad that ISU has not included spread eagles in its Zayaking rules?!

All I can say is, the difference in scores between Max and Hanyu should have been bigger today...:disapp:

I do think Hanyu should have scored a bit lower, but on the other hand, a <3 point PCS difference between him and Kovtun seems about right to me... :ohwell:
