Yuzuru Hanyu: 2014-15 Season

Thank you cruzceleste and 311mi!
I'm happy to read about Yuzuru's sister! I knew he started to skate because of her and how she supported him to keep going when the sendai rink closed, but hadn't heard more about her! If Brian knows how much she loves his brother I suppose they keep in touch a lot!

And I think the Tatsuki's "fans" that are badmouthing Yuzuru are really disrespectful to Tatsuki too! They don't see how amazing Tatsuki is to decide to retire to follow his dream to study! I think it wasn't an easy decision for him! And I don't know how the process to be admitted to a master degree in Japan is, but in my country it is very difficult!

As others have stated, I don't think the posters speaking poorly of Yuzuru are really Tatsuki's "fans". These self-proclaimed "fans" use any opportunity to criticize other skaters, and view everything as skating federation Konspiracy. Many posts seem generally negative and/or disrespectful.

I think many of Machida's fans may be shocked and disappointed, but support and respect his decision to move on.

Very worried hearing about Yuzuru's stomach pain and physical condition. He has pushed himself much too hard! I don't understand reports that he had stomach pain starting after GPF but did not seek medical attention because he wanted to focus on Nationals? Am I misunderstanding?

No wonder he announced already that he would retire after 2018 Olympics.

Yuzuru is his own biggest enemy I would say with his crazy layouts ideas :laugh2:

Agreed, his physical condition is his main enemy right now and him psyching himself out. :drama: actual skaters? Umm...Javier? Honestly, the way this season is going I can't tell anything anymore

if he falls on his programs maxim might be contender since his PCS arent bad whether we agree or not, he has to be clean though

There is 30 points diffrence in free skate between clean Maxim and Yuzuru with a fall on quad sal ( or fall on a lutz ) so he needs to really bomb to make it happen

I think the only reasonable threat is Javi, but it also needs few things to happen

yeah i mean multiple ofc not just one

A few 16-18 yo skaters may be a threat to yuzu in 2 years. In my opinion, yuzu should watch out for the young russian skaters and the Chinese skater boyang, who already nailed three types of quad jumps. But of course, if yuzu can stay healthy and even improve his stamina and asthma issues, these juniors should not be able to dethrone him in 2018. Btw, he might have just experienced an asthma attack (I'm not sure) before the long program, because I saw a few pictures of him using his inhalers.

Am feeling sad about machida's retirement. Can't imagine how will I handle it when yuzu retires. I wish a miracle happens and yuzu decides to skate for 1-2 more seasons after 2018.

I don't "hold him up" that much .. In the sense that I think that depending on how Yuzuru skates there are a bunch of skaters that can certainly beat Yuzuru, any top skater actually, I especially look forward to Denis Ten at worlds (I was about to say Machida but  I wanted Tatsuki to finally win gold, lord) and in 1 or 2 years, or even less, skaters that recently turned seniors too and juniors, especially Shoma, which seems to be the most refined and consistent of the juniors right now, especially with Yuzuru's almost permanent issues at the free program, he isn't flaw free in this regard. Did anyone forget that Yuzuru came out of basically nowhere to rise up the ranks in what, 2 years? Also, Chan acquired his quads at the age of 19, so skaters that looks right now less "intimidating" can rise too, of course Chan was in a different time etc, but just to show that one can up their technical content like that, Shoma gained consistency in his 4T and 3A by the time of one season only. But maybe I think this because I don't care much about his placements  I think we shouldn't expect that he will win everything. After all, he came in 4th at NHK trophy didn't he? What I think is that the way his PCS is currently going there's no way that he would skate clean programs and not possibly win, whether people agree with it or not. I don't have too much faith in Boyang, especially because skating isn't only about jumps, one can arguee about that of course because the prime factor that separates top skaters and other skaters is the technical content and jumps contributes the most for it. However there's a reason of why Boyang is 18 , I think (?) and is still at the junior circuit, even if he improved a lot, the quality of his skating and presentation isn't very exceptional, having 1 or 3 quads doesn't change this, especially when you're from a smaller federation like China's. I'm not a fan but Shoma is the best of the youngest for me. He doesn't enchantes me yet but, heck, I think in presentation he's better than a lot top skaters actually, he just needs to build his senior career and make some splash.

There are plenty of people who can (and has) beat Yuzuru ;) Especially in a few years with the juniors coming up, and with Patrick (possibly) coming back next season. But as of right now, its all his to lose. If he goes clean, no one can beat him. If he makes a 2 or more big mistakes and some other skater lays down an absolutely clean competition, the gold will slip from his fingers. But we also have to remember hes not in good condition lately. All the recent happenings are building up and taking a big toll on him, physically and emotionally. Good thing there's a 3 month break till Worlds and after that he can (hopefully) get a good long rest and finally let his body heal up.

I've been lurking on Yulia Lipnitskaya's thread and one poster shared some photos from the GPF, I noticed that one of them is Yulia at the practice wearing Irene gloves. :)

:p Yeah, she got them I believe last year when they were at Saitama for the WC. They set up a small donation booth that sold Sendai rink souvenirs (all proceeds went to supporting the rink). So cute that she's still wearing them though

edit: found the little booth

Really? I didn't know about the booth, then she probably knows for what the gloves stand for. Thank you for the information.

Kovtun gets around 8 in each category for PCS when it comes to international comps like GPF and Worlds. Hanyu is in the 9 range. Bout 15 point difference on PCS alone when you consider both SP and FS. And Hanyu would have to totally bomb for their TES to be close.

I'm not a fan of Kovtun. If someone else than Yuzu wins the world title, I hope it's Denis or Javi (or Nam but not this year ). Anyway, not Kovtun:laugh:

as i said i didnt mean just one fall but i see your point, i will make sure to use word "bomb" next time  btw han yan could be contender too but considering his season so far its unlikely

Same. I don't know why but Kovtun's skating just seems so weird to me (mainly the jumps) so I don't want Yuzuru to lose to him. I enjoy Denis's skating more than Javi's and I have a soft spot for Denis since 2013. I do enjoy both though and I wouldn't mind if they beat Yuzuru if they're clean. I just hope that Yuzuru gets some good rest these next three months and does his best.

I think the only one who can take on Yuzuru is Patrick Chan. Skaters like Denis, Han Yan, and Javi are worthy opponents but their inconsistencies aren't helping. Despite his 3A, Patrick is still a consistent jumper and let's not forget about his skating skills (his speed, lines, and edge work...they are to die for ). I'm surprise no one mentioned Nam. So far he has a consistent quad sal, and recently he's got a quad toe. I think with time he will be a worthy opponent for Yuzuru. No doubt though, this season belongs to Yuzuru as long as Patrick is out.

But Yuzuru now have also quad loop and quad lutz  I think he will never gonna attempt quad lutz in competition, but I think quad loop may come close to 2018. Yuzuru is now in situation when Chan was starting his domination. The diffrence is Patrick was sticking with the same tech content all that 4 years. It was not touchable for anyone, but then come Yuzuru - catched his tech and passed. That's why I think Yuzuru is still upping his tech content to not let anyone catch him by 2018

If I would have to bet money on someone as Yuzuru rival in future it would be on Shoma, but it depends how he will grow, how he will progress technically etc

I think Han Yan might medal if he pulls it together after the nightmare of season he had. If Denis does it too (I think he usually peaks late at the season (?), i'm not sure) he might get the title, his programs are just too wonderful, both of them. I actually want Denis to gain consistency and challenge for the top.

I want Yuzuru to win if he's flawfree, I know that he usually is excused of one or two errors, but I'd rather any of those two plus Javier or whoever to be honest, anything can happen. The worst scenarios would be either Yuzuru bomb (no!), or win but isn't clean and any of the top skaters doesn't but is clean :drama:

I'm not fond of Nam and I don't think he's there yet, he has the jumps (they are not outstanding though, there's room for improvement I think), the consistency, the coach but everything else for me is (??) I can't seem to like his skating ...

Anyway so much speculation, as If I ruled the "Worlds" ...

Also, If Yuzuru wants to "dominate", the best bet would be consistency honestly, because he already has the reputation, everything. Him landing consistently 1 quad at SP and 2 at LP would be much harder to beat than any Yuzuru with an inconsistent "supposedly quad loop", those quads seem so distant. But we know that he will be upping technnical content nevertheless though ...
