Yuzuru Hanyu: 2014-15 Season

Regarding the small medal ceremony from Nice, I agree Yuzu's "lost puppy" attitude had much to do with him not understanding the language. I remember at one point he literally walked over to Daisuke for guidance. That's why I found Yuzuru's interaction with Shoma at GPF so touching. He actually knew how difficult was to be a Japanese kid with no English knowledge at such a big event. And he even provided translation... Such a sweet soul

That costume is really beautiful, I love the sleeves and how it flows nicely when he skated. .

If I remembered correctly he was given a cloth or was it a costume during the sendai victory parade ceremony. And the presenter said hopefully one day he be able to wear that or costume to that....I would love to see Yuzu in samurai inspired costume.

Yes! At that parade he was appointed Sendai tourism ambassador, and was presented the Japanese costume! Please see 4P.

The attitude towards Shoma at GPF 2014 was really impressive (I’ d never known yuzu had translated for Shoma at that time until I read that Sportiva article recently, typically yuzu!) He really is caring and kind-hearted guy.:yay:

He's really kind and gentle, no wonder sota became such a fanboy lols! I want to see more interaction between yuzu and sota too! That might be fun to watch! it's funny how yuzu is actually not older than shoma etc but acts really like a big brother!

Yuzuru can't win every single competition he enters but he nearly does, his podium consistency is very high and if Yuzu is healthy, he'll for sure score the highest points! I can't wait for the day he reaches 300 points, if that's possible.

I think this year competing as the Olympic champion and having such a terrible, horrid season, has really helped him to mature and put things and priorities into perspective. This year taught valuable lessons in dealing with pressure but also in teaching him just how vulnerable and precious his health is, and I think his resolve and craving to have clean performances is stronger than ever. And a healthy Hanyu who starts performing cleanly consistently...well I imagine anyone would be hard pressed to beat that.

It's difficult to have clean performances when his program is so difficult. His goal is to have clean performances without reducing the difficulty. I don't expect him to have clean performances all the time. Based on his pattern, he makes more mistakes at the start of the season. As the season progresses, he makes less mistakes and eventually has clean performances at the end of the season. Once he performs clean, he will raise the difficulty level again in the next season and the pattern repeats. IMO, the unclean performances are part of the process of him continuously challenging himself.

I don't care how many titles he'll win. He always gives his everything during performances. His skating makes me happy and is very inspirational for me. He's a wonderful skater, an artist on ice even without all his medals. I just wish him two great, clean performances at next Olympics in 2018

I agree! As long as he's healthy and happy, I'll be happy too!

No kidding!　Given Yuzu is only 2 years older than shoma, it’s funny. Yuzu must be happy to have younger Japanese player. Since he went to Senior at the age of 15, he had been surrounded by older guys (like Dai, Nobu, Kodu, Mura,,) .

Yeah, my finger crossed for his health and 2 clean programs of both SP and FP in 2018 Olympic. During the road to 2018, we can see his performance, smile, courage, etc! Even with the barriers in his way, even with the ups and downs, he will get up again and again to push any obstacles out of his way, which really captures my heart.

Thanks for the link...I'm loving Mr. Ambassador in the brochure . Totally made me look up Sendai again, hopefully one day I will be able to visit Yuzu's hometown and Sendai ice rink. Tokyo to Sendai via Shinkansen approx. 1hour 40min is :agree:

The sad thing is that Sendai is very near where the 2011 earthquake happened so many people are actually afraid of going there for holiday - people in Hong Kong at least, and a LOT of HK people visit Japan because it is so near. The guide books to Tokyo, Hokkaido etc. get updated every year, so if you were to visit a bookstore you'd see 2015 versions of loads of cities, but for Sendai they are still selling the 2011 version, produced before the earthquake, because there is no demand for more books. It's very sad

I'm proud of Yuzu that one of his missions is to continuously support his hometown rebuilding.

Thats Ryuichi Kihara I think. If I remember correctly, he also had a costume that looked like Yuzu's POTO1 too. Maybe he is Yuzu's costume designers inspiration

Yes, of course. It's just that there's not much he can really do about the radiation itself, because that will take a long time to subside. I guess it's just a feeling of... helplessness, that he is putting in so much effort for Sendai but there's really not much he can do.

More than losing his title to Javi, I think Yuzu was terribly mad at himself for messing up those first two quads. He wanted a clean performance and couldn't deliver it, and somehow I'm glad he didn't win his title like that. When asked about his Olympic gold he said he wasn't completely at peace with it because of his falls, and he was actually cheering for Patrick because he didn't want to win like this. Just like here he was cheering for Javier because he knew he had chances to beat him with a clean performance. Losing to Javi eased the pain and taught him that he could actually survive it. I think it was easier for Javi to be happy for him every time Yuzu beat him because well there is no question in his mind that Yuzu is better than him. But to Yuzu it is not the same: he knew he could easily beat Javier but was betrayed by his own body, so in the end he lost to himself. I like the way how both ultimately handled the situation: Javi was aware of Yuzu's feelings of regret and didn't hold a grudge in any way: on the contrary he was extra caring with him. Ad Yuzu didn't try to hide his disappointment: he was happy for Javi but definitely wished he had won instead. And that makes them very good sportsmen and people: as Brian says this can work because they are both good people.

All this to say that more than winning (because he already has all the major titles), it's both pushing the limits and being consistent that will make Yuzu happy. But this is a paradox in itself because the more you push the limits, less chances you have to be consistent. And that's where Yuzu's genius and uniqueness lies. He will always strive for something unreachable: and this makes you feel very humble and full of respect for him. He already has written his name in the history of this sport and people didn't cease to admire him when he lost his title to Javier. Quite the contrary actually.

Yes that's very sad. I plan to go to Japan next year with a group of friends and everybody agreed to stay in the south because of the risks of radiation. Nobody want to go to the northern regions so I guess I won't see Sendai...

The radiation outside of the 'danger zone' is not such that it would harm someone visiting the region for a few days. It is the people who are living there permanently that are in danger of long-term radiation effects. They take iodine pills and need to be careful of what they eat as it is radiation taken via water and food that will stay in the body and cause damage.
