2015 Skate America Mens FS Oct 24

And congrats to Mura (and his costume) for garnering so much buzz. Actually, compared to the first version I don't find this one as garish.

WAIT are you saying there was a version THAT WAS WORSE?!?!?!?!

I think I preferred the initial version of Max's program, but he really skated very well here. Shoma definitely deserved to win the FS, but with Max's six point lead from the short I think the result is fair. Good job to all the medallists, they actually all skated very well, which is not always a guarantee.

Just watched the Men's Free.

Congrats to Max! I think it was deserved given his technical performance both in the free and short.

1. Max: that was good but... not as good as at Nebelhorn? I mean the choreography, not the execution. I really liked it at Nebelhorn but here it was from jump to jump and not much in between. Did he change anything?

2. Shome: awesome! Well deserved, hopefully see you at GPF, Shome!

3. Han Yan: nope, that program doesn't work for me. Run of the mill and quite boring to be honest.

4. Adian Peetkev: nope. Still boring.

5. Jason Brown: .... not boring? I disliked that program at Ondrej Nepala so I don't know whether it was the HD with big loudspeakers or Jason just skated way better but I didn't find it boring. I'm fine with that program now. :)

6. Konstantin: ouch. Possibly my favorite program of all in terms of choreography but those mistakes took the steam out of it.

7. Denis Ten: why do you do this to me Denis, whyyyy. I SO wanted to see you in person at GPF especially that the program seems AMAZEBALLS. Like wow, those step sequences were to die for. Charisma and command was just oozing out of Denis during those parts. Of course it was evident that he pretty much gave up on the jumps, I suppose he must have suspected how this event might end if he came here injured. It was almost a schiozophrenic performance: the begening was so "whatever, I need to get through this part, I'll just skate around" and the ending was all "Just ***king watch me bit**es". Still,

8. Takahito Mura: I love the program. Cirque du Soleil certainly has some great music for figure skating. Now the costume: if there is a program that demands the feathers, ripped frou frou and see through sleeves in the grandest Japanese costuming tradition, it's a program with Cirque du Soleil music. I would actually recommend more color. Blue or purple perhaps, a bit like Rika Hongo's. BUT... all that ripped frou frou sewn into his jacket made him look thick. That needs a bit of adjustment.

Phil threw shade at Shoma too:

Also:

So not getting what Shoma's costume has to do with anything...

Also, I don't disagree that Jason had costly TES mistakes, but why did he not bother to mention that Jason got the highest PCS (but mentioning Max got the 3rd highest?), which is also a factor in him getting bronze (though people not doing well played a role).

But okay, people had disastrous programs. Why isn't Jason given credit for not having his own problem skate? Even with his tech mistakes, he still managed to get the 3rd highest TES. :ohwell:

Honestly, I think Phil just got excited about a U.S. man winning Skate America that he didn't bother to state much beyond that.

ETA: Okay, I get it now. Phil's point is that Shoma and Jason's outfits were super sparkly but Max, sans costume sparkles, sparked cause of his skating. But still....the metaphor falls flat because it's not as if Shoma skated badly (he skated GREAT) and besides the jump errors Jason's performance was great.

That guy sounds like your average conservative "men must dress and skate like men" type of reviewer. I wonder how he has survived all the Japanese men without an aneurysm so far.

Seems there is a double standard here, not ok for Phil to be critical of costumes but ok for those who are being critical of Phil being critical of.......lol

Mura NEEDS to win gold in something...let's give him Gold for most memorable costume.
-It was better when it was blue. I don't know why they chose grey. That's like skydiving from a plane and deciding half way that you'd rather not. Go all the way!

Hahaha, yes. Blue would have been much better. If you do that, you don't do half measures!

But the first prize for weird costumes goes to Takahito Mura! That was really out of the place...

I just don't get how people can say that costume was out of place. It was a figure skating performance to Cirque du Soleil. You can't dress like Max Aaron or even Menshov for that. You should dress the flashiest you can.

And just where are you seeing anyone saying it's not ok for Phil to be critical of costumes?

good for Aaron, he was super happy so I can't hate but man was his program ugly. Not the jumps obviously.
Did those judges that gave the PC marks smoke crack?

Is that really true, though? Max was ahead of Shoma 47.96 to 43.28 in TES in the short TES. Shoma bested Max by less than 2 points in the free TES, which means overall Max's tech was still better if you take both nights/programs into account.

Correct. Most of the haters are completely ignoring the SP segment and the fact that Max had a clean SP and Uno fell on his quad (now -4 GOE), giving Max a 6-point lead. As I mentioned, both skaters were over scored on PCS in the freeskate IMO, but the final result should stand. If Shoma had cleaner landings in his FS he would have won too, but of course people just want to use PCS as a means of giving one skater the victory. Is there an argument for Uno winning? Sure. But there's also definitely an argument for Max winning. This isn't some outrageous result, and it's not like the judges gave Max PCS of 84 to ensure a victory as I had expected them to.

American flag crack, lol. Home inflation is nothing new and live experince is different from sitting in front of TV so maybe Max did create a magic moment out there in the arena that didn't come across on TV. Prepare for the outrage after Kovtun's PCS at Rostelecom, heh. I'll start cursing the judges and their PCS judging if he keeps those marks elswhere.

Kovtun isn't competing in Russia.

Okay, men's scorer here. I missed the event, and have no idea what the results are. However, I did find some videos.

Aaron: I think this is the first one of his programs that hasn't bored me.

Han:  Shame about the jumping errors...

Kostya:

Shoma: :cheer: That was awesome.

Adian: I don't know if I like him or if I'm bored by him.

D10: I think it's better for me to eschew watching him before the second half of the season? :slink:

Miner: He's very pretty. Not a fan of the vocals, though.

Brown: I love this program.

And with that, we close. Sorry Mura and Bychenko.

So you are saying Mr. Aaron must get 70 PCS because you think his choreography is not your taste? Having good choreography does not mean you must get higher PCS. And in this case Mr. Uno got higher PCS than Mr. Aaron, more than 3 points.

As for me I prefer watching Mr. Aaron's huge jumps all days rather than Mr. Uno'a cheated 3A and toe axel.

Mr. Aaron deserves his win with two gusty performances. On other days Mr. Aaron will never get such privilege because he is not judge's taste. Because he is not "artistic" according to some people But today he wins. That's it.

His programs are not masterpiece, but Mr. Uno's programs are not either. I am glad that a true jumper like Mr. Aaron gets his rightful win when he truly delivers.

Let those who cherish true jump technique and good jumping ability enjoy their days for a fleeting moment.

And how on earth Mr. Brown got 85 PCS? I am puzzled.

^This. For people who complain that skaters win so often on PCS, you'd think they'd let technical skaters win a competition here and there.
