Yuzuru Hanyu: 2015-16 Season

I never though I would ever say this about Hanyu, but he's becoming headcase-y - especially in the short program and with his 3Lz. Hanyu has the goods, but he's just not bringing it in competition. It's starting to remind me of Gracie But I'll always cheer for this headcase no matter what!
Hope he can fight back in the free and put himself in a good position to make the GPF

Actually he should have gone for 3lz3lo (so even if he popped the 3lo, 2lo still counts) and it would be safe. Maybe he should think of it this way,

I agree...he's looked so thin lately. Yes, I know he is always thin, but in the last several months I noticed a change, mostly in his face. It's not as full as it was which makes him look 16 again. I worry that he doesn't take in enough calories when he's training hard.

Yuzu had such nice plump cheeks at Autumn Classic. I miss them already

Orser Papa had a tough night...(if you don't know u can check the ladies thread too...he has two students 8th and 12th).

You all must know how to read him more than I did, because I can't tell if he is extra nervous or not. And the position of that 4T, many mentioned that it seems unbelievably close to boards, but it is the same place where he landed every single one of his quads in the run through. Oh, his quads were perfect then! I think popping that affected the combo following so he was unable to do 3lz-3t; even he who is quick thinking could not remember that it won't be counted.

For some reason I don't exactly think this is a meltdown, nor do I want to normalize it by saying that he always has a bad first outing. I do want him to be on the podium so he can have a shot at going to GPF. Yes, in the past years even when he has had bad first outing, he has managed to get to the GPF, no?

To me the placement of his 4Ts this year in the SP and the 2nd one in the FS are definitely going in at more of an arc than his usual approach where he goes straight down the rink. Wonder if that is throwing him off.

If he had bad practice and did bad in competition, I'm not worried. But this. Good in practice and bad in competition means he has some mental issues:scratch:hopefully he can get back strong tomorrow.

no, i don't think it's a mental issue. the entry into the quad messed it up because he was too close to the board and didn't time it right. i don't really get why it's a rule that single double jumps count for nothing... everything else was pretty okay, but because he doubled the second jump on his combo, that whole thing didn't count because he repeated the double jump (even though the first one didn't count), another stupid rule.

leave it to random rules that don't help anything to completely ruin an actually okay skate. Yuzuru's score could have easily been around Patrick's if it wasn't for rules, honestly.

I'm saying he should replace that 3lz3T with 3lz3lo. So even if he has a meh 3lz, he could still go for 2lo and it will be safe from the 4T in case he pop the 4T like today.
He has no luck with 3lz3T recently, should have stopped doing that combo. And 3lo is his good jump. So that's my take. But of course, training for 3lz3lo couldn't be done in one or two weeks.

I agree. I wasn't saying that he should have gone for the 3-3Lo. I was just pointing out that with the bad landing of the 3Lz, there was probably no way he could have done a 3Lo even if he wanted to.

Ah I see you point now. I thought you were saying he should have just thrown that in there. Wonder if he could pull it off. I know I was blown away by Daisuke's today
But seriously though he hits really beautiful 3Lz-3T in practice, I hope he can get it back in competition.

Oh man...

Just when you thought it's gonna be great with that awesome that is triple axel.. it started to go downhill (that's kinda exaggerating but yea). I wanna say that those steps leading into the quad toe was just strange and I feel like it's taking him too long like 2-3 secs too long. Also the fact that he started the entry to take off from that one corner, give him one more point for the strange. :scratch:

Again, the triple triple combination that seems to be working ok just until before the competition.. caused him trouble. Such a shame that it just had to be invalidated and he lost tons of points from those two jumping passes. Very costly.

I feel pretty bad for him because like you guys said he didn't look that settled or had that calmness he usually had just when the music started. He could be worried for the steps change into the quad toe as well and they have to do something about it, change it for sure.

He looked kinda.. can't find the right word for it, odd, in the K&C like his face flashed different kind of expressions/emotions one after another but it's only normal I guess. He knew he messed it up and probably expected to rank lower while at the same time bitterly laughing at his head-case momentarily self. I wanna give him a big hug.

On the positive note, it's still wide open for him to medal and I'm sure he's gonna do everything he can to perform great in the free (I sure hope so). I hope he won't beat himself too hard on it and try to get his mind in the right place and be prepared for the redemption. He can do it!

hey this has nothing to do with what is happening right now but I am wondering if one of you had a link to that 2015WC video montage done by Japanese tv I believe.
It was set to bolero music but opera version with German lyrics. It showed a wide variety of skaters and how they did at worlds. One moment was Yuzuru walking in slow motion backstage with the shadow moving on his back, it also showed the shower of poohs in slowmo and in the end it was the Yuzu's final phantom ending pose with "see you next season" written.
That was such a beautiful video and I have been looking for it for hours today but can't find it

That should be the ending for 2015 World Championships from Japanese broadcast. They almost always do a montage set to Bolero as a wrap up to the season. There's similar videos for past years too, I personally love them.

On to Yuzuru's performance... I was shocked. I didn't watch it live but I was checking scores throughout the night. At first I thought he hadn't skated yet since I didn't see his name near the top of the ranking like I expected, then I saw he was 6th! It was even more shocking than when I woke up to check scores for CoC SP and saw he was second to Kovtun. I'm just really surprised, I was expecting him to do well in the short but this is so deflating I will say I thought the rest of the performance was fantastic, just got to get those jumps (also thought the entrance into the quad seemed different than practice). Overall the event seemed really messy for all the men and he still has a chance to rebound in the free. I'm going to try and stay optimistic and believe he'll light it up tomorrow night.
