Patrick Chan

I believe that this season PCS have been really generous for everyone; but Patrick, for the free skate, had already scored 96 in PCS( at TEB 2013), so He has been the one who has been influenced less by the general raise of this mark

A REPOST - accidentally deleted it

Thanks everyone for bringing such wonderful stuff to the thread lately. I'll comment on some of the earlier stuff later. For now, though, I'll comment just on Patrick's Worlds SP, having just watched it for the first time. Beautiful 4T+3T. The 3A didn't look like a "normal" fall. It's as if he landed and his legs slid out from under him. Nice 3Lz, a bit forward on the landing. The footwork sequence was just plain FUN to watch here. It seemed like Patrick was really enjoying himself during it. Congrats to him for being in the Top 3!!! :yay:

One question though: If you had told me someone could get 94 with a fall (albeit fully-rotated) before this season, I would have been like, "No way!" Are everybody else's scores so high just because Yuzu's are up in the stratosphere? Patrick only got 98 with the same jump layout and no fall at 2013 TEB. The ranking is correct, but the scores seem extra high this year. Let's call it "The Yuzu Effect." I hope Patrick will be able to break 100 in the SP internationally next season!

ETA: I just found out that Nam didn't quality for the FS. :jaw: WHAT THE HECK HAPPENED??? Well, a Top 5 from Patrick will give Canada 2 spots for next year. Do they only get 3 if he wins? I wonder what Liam is thinking right now.

umm i am bad person but i don´t like Nam, also the attitude of his fans after national when they despised and insulted Liam, did not help the image I have of Nam. And after the resignation of Liam for " the good of Canada" I was very angry.
So I'm sorry but I'm happy of his bad performance.

PS: Sorry for my english

I have had the observation and opinion that PCS wise Patrick has been stuck between inflation underfoot and a ceiling overhead the last few years. I viewed a few minutes of pre Mens SP discussion by an American panel where they (particularly Weiss I believe) mentioned the issue of PCS inflation in Patrick's absence and voiced the need for judges to lower their PCS scoring now that Patrick is back. IOW, to make room for Patrick's right place at the top.

Not happening though.

By the way, I have a question to ask you whose I don' t know if you have already talked about ( I'm sorry if I will sound a bit repetitive) : if Patrick had won OGM would he have retired definitely or would he have come back to competition?

I'm happy to see the mostly positive press after Patrick's skate last night - as he said before, people forget that he's only been back to competitive skating for 6 months, so to be in third right now is quite a feat! To quote Kathy:

"At the end of the day, Patrick is special," Johnson said. "Really special in a way that no other skater (is), he brings special things to the ice, beyond jumping.

"And I think honestly this season has almost exceeded what we were kind of hoping and expecting. So that's a testament to his talent and his hard work. He's a hard, hard worker, so it's nice to see him put it together in the moment."

I look forward to him giving the mens' FS event a rousing finish tomorrow night!

I don't think anyone can answer a what-if question about the past. When one thing changes, so many others do too, like the Butterfly Effect. Nobody knows what subsequent events would be. That's why regrets are pointless. Better to live in the now and create the future.

eta. As some say, God works in mysterious ways. Guru SF says, "the Universe often delivers gifts disguised as disappointments or even apparent disasters." Only with wisdom or in hind sight do we appreciate such gifts. Look what two Olympic disappointments have brought us, the figure skating world, and Patrick himself.

More of my favorite quotes and commentary from/about Patrick from this article:

“Doing two quads in a short program is unbelievable,” said Chan of his opponents who really raised the bar jump-wise during his year away from competition. “For me, I like to let them go guns blazing and I’m just doing my own methodical work, very thoughtful and I’m thinking of every single step in the program. I’m not just blaring into my jumps and going for it and being disappointed if I fall on a jump because there’s so much more to skating than just the jumps.”

Always a highlight of his programs, Chan’s step sequence here earned +3 grades of execution from all but one of the judges. It was all part of giving the best performance possible for the crowd, which contains a huge number of Canadians who made the trek south of the border.

About his 3A last night he said:

“At least I know what I did wrong so I won’t do it again,” said Chan, who drew the last start position and will close Friday’s free skate.

Aw, Patrick said in an interview with PJ Kwong that tomorrow night will be the last time we see his Chopin LP and we should not miss it.

Go to her Facebook page here and scroll down to the interview. He talks about the LP around 2:45.

His Chopin LP will be one of my forever favorites, but I wish him even more spectacular success with his future LPs.

In the same video, I also loved what he said to Scott about his 4CC win (~1:30), that it taught him "not to lose hope and to always give it 100% no matter the results, no matter where you're standing in the group."

I am so proud of Patrick - he has learned so much about himself, his skating, and most of all, about mental toughness and perseverance in the face of tough challenges. I can see the difference in the way he talks about himself and his performances, how much more organized he is back stage, and even in little details like his hair and grooming. He is truly evolving into a gentleman-athlete.

Really loved the way he hugged Nam backstage - I think the next step is for him to grow in his sportsmanship and leadership skills. Even though FS is an individual sport, I think Patrick could be a great team leader to Nam, Liam, Kevin, and the other Canadian skaters so they bond as a close team going into the 2018 Olympics. How great would that be!

And now I'm off to prepare for an Introduction to Twitter lesson that I'm giving - the attendees will be seeing Patrick's picture - a lot!

I just wish that Patrick Chan and the music didn’t have this feeling of disconnection. I love the choreography for his short program, and I did like how he skated last night minus the axel. But I miss the connection to the music. I do hope it goes well in the free.

Welcome to the GS and the Patrick fest, Yuui! Post long and post often.

Patrick's current LP is all about the music. With few exceptions, he is one with the music and the ice in his masterful performance of this program.

I can’t say that I love the program, mostly ‘cause of the music it self. I don’t really like this piece of Chopin. So I have a hard time with the program, I wish he would have picked something more melodious. It is a hard piece to interpret and to make the audience connect with.
I like the skating, the beginning lacks a bit. Probably ‘cause of the way he sets up the jumps. Some parts connect with the music, especially when the music calms down a bit and get more melancholic.
I don’t know what he is trying to project with the program, If it just a feeling or some kind of story.
But overall it is a good program, and I think he is on the right track to find something new in his skating. =)

Yes, I saw the short live on TV yesterday or more like this morning. For me his nemesis is the axel :drama:

When the axel is on it is a good axel, not among the best but it's good. But for me that is the one jump I feel he struggles the most with when everything is on the line.

Hi! Welcome! We can disagree on this haha! I'm never one for "telling a story" with the music unless it is relevant to the skate, and I sometimes even have a tough time with that. I love that he has no character in his FS, it is just pure movement and skating and so refreshing and I feel like he is SO into it. I'm over all of the background stories most of the time, drug addicts, star-crossed lovers, death, Gone with the Wind etc. Just skate for the love of it and it will show, fake drama doesn't sell it to me anymore, I can always tell when whatever emotion they are showing comes from within and to me that makes a difference.
I have enjoyed Patrick's SP if only because he is trying something new and having fun with it and you can tell he feels more comfortable performing now. Is it the greatest SP? Not at all, but I admire him for it and I love seeing him smile, even if he fell on the 3A.
Hi FS is a masterpiece to me because I love how he uses the music and his lines and carriage are incredible along with his balance and speed. He truly seems to feel this program.

I think it has a lot to do with the fact that everyone has drilled it into his head that it is indeed his nemesis. It's not his best jump but his rate of landing it this season has been so much better and I attribute that to his mental state of trying to just let it go. Even commentators talk about his 3A like he needs to slay a dragon or something, even Kurt! Drives me nuts, I wish people would stop yammering on about it. Like when everyone was saying oh he needs a jump coach. I'm sure he has someone, his jumps are fine, it's mental for him like it can be for a lot of the elite skaters; it's a moment, you can be nervous, full of adrenaline and ice is slippery.
