2016 World Championships Ladies SP

Satoko and Zhenya will probably soar in the FS ;) Personally I'd like to see Rika pass them both

I'm actually a bit sad for Rika. Just so short of 70. :( But if she is on with her Riverdance...who knows. I have my doubts. I think she is one of those skaters who can skate clean, engage the audience, do whatever but still won't make it to the top. She is just not that beloved with the judges. A shame really.

Wow, never saw a 130+ page competition thread just 1 hour after the competition - no matter how I like to read them looks like I am too overwhelmed this time even to start. Just my guess about the popular topics:

American ladies - YES!
Gracie was overscored
Gracie was perfect
Satoko was underscored
Mao was underscored
Ashley was underscored
Anna was underscored
The Russians, don't complain about Gracie's score - you had your Sochi!

Am I right? :)

As for me, it was a very nice competition starting with Zijun's lovely skating. The 2 highlights for me were Anna (I was mesmerized) and Ashley who was on fire. Medvedeva seemed nervous. Lena made a mistake on flip. Satoko...well she did what she usually does but I am not a fan. Gracie was imo very overscored. As usual, she starts with one of the most telegraphed 3Lz-3T in history. And then clean but just uninspiring. But we all knew beforehand... After what I saw my SP placements would be:

1. Anna - breathtaking
2. Ashley - gorgeous
3. - 4. Gracie and Evgeniya
5. Elena

Anyway, with the exception of Gracie's 2 places up and Ashley's 2 places down the rest is more or less within the margin of fairness. No matter how big the advantage Gracie got she still has to be clean to win because someone among Evgenija, Ashley, Anna, and Elena will surely be. And if not we still have Satoko who is always clean and will get her expected 140 and 210 total no matter what.

As sad as it is (for me at least), I don't see anyone but an American winning.
There will be everything - GOE and PCS games all over the place

I wish Russian and Japanese ladies to skate clean and not to be too sad about the judging...

I find it hard to not see an American placing. But if Gold replicates 4CC she will blow her lead. Wagner will likely be given UR liberties (especially if Gold falters). Hopefully the American girls will do well enough for one of them to place, if they stay on their feet, they should do enough.

Sigh. Watching both performances again, not only should Pogorilaya be ahead of Gold she should be so by a significant margin. She'd be around 75.5 while Gold is maybe 71.5 in my book. I'd also give Pogorilaya the highest PCS.

Anyway, no more complaining about Russian over scoring please.

OMG WHAT HAS HAPPENED HERE?!?!?!?! GRACIE 76? ANNA IN 2ND? TOP 6 ALL 70+? GABBY AND RIKA WITH HUGE SBs? So much to go over. Maybe it's true that me not watching gives the ladies a better result...

1. Gracie Gold: Ridiculously overscored in PCS, but I loved her fire throughout the program! Hands-down her best performance of this lovely SP. Now will she be able to carry this greatness to the FS? The big question of this competition. :)
2. Anna Pogorilaya: O...M...G! NO WAY. ANNA IN 2ND? I'm so happy for her! She deserves to be leading the Russians, and although the score was pretty inflated as well, I'm happy that she performed the heck out of that great program.:yes2:
3. Evgenia Medvedeva: Too bad about the 3F, but she is still in a good position. With both Gracie and Anna surprisingly beating her, and having to skate after Lena in the free, I seriously don't know what to expect.
4. Ashley Wagner: Her reaction after the ending pose! Yes! Guys, this is a great demonstration of the musicality in a program that I love so much. Ashley's SP has been my favourite SP this season and I'm happy that she did so well here once more! Great job!
5. Elena Radionova: Selling the program as usual, and odd mistake on the 3F, but still, I loved the power she gave in her performance! I'm so excited to see her live in the FS this time!
6. Satoko Miyahara: No surprise here either, good job by Satoko. I love the audience interaction and that she really connected to what she was doing on the ice!
7. Rika Hongo: PCS was underscored! She deserved at least 32+ for that awesome skate! Great job Rika!
8. Gabrielle Daleman: YAAAAS! GABBY! WOOHOO! CLEAN! Thank you for entertaining me and the audience Gabby! I love her program, and when she's on, she is spectacular. Hoping she carries this momentum to the FS!
9. Mao Asada: Devastated that she's very out of the top 6. But nevertheless, it was great to see her still keep a smile even after all those mistakes and her ending reaction was cute! Hope she performs well in the FS.
10. Mirai Nagasu: Her score was quite lower than the others, but this was by far the best performance of this "Demons" SP. The crazy audience cries really helped too. Every moment was epic!
11. Zijun Li: Beautiful. Simply beautiful Zijun! If every moment was epic for Mirai, than every moment was beautiful for Zijun! And her fist-pumping was so adorable too!
12. Elizabet Tursynbaeva: Very big deduction on the 3Lz, but kudos to her for keeping the performance up and a good finish too. I really like her FS, so I hope she has a good showing of it here!
16. Da Bin Choi: Yay for Da Bin for being clean again! The fist-pumping was cute too! Most important thing: much better makeup than at 4CC. I'm serious! Anyway, she was probably the only skater honestly in this whole competition who I found was underscored. I mean, she got 23 for PCS at 4CC, but she got 21 here, when the two performances were on par. Yes, starting order and all that is a factor, but I just hope they don't do something like this for the FS.
22. So Youn Park:............excuse me while I go cry in the corner. :slink::sad21::sad14:

Headlines after the Ladies FS.

"Graceful for Gold"

"Ladies FS champion says her name is not Gracie Silver or Gracie Bronze. It is Gracie Gold."

"Gold full of Gracie wins Worlds"

"US wins the 'Gold War' against the Russians."

"Graceful Golden Firebird"

Sorry, Pogo did not deserve 75... nobody here did.

In comparison to the other Russians and Wagner I'd say she did. If the general level of scoring was lower she should probably be at around 74 but it really was a good skate.

By the way, youtube likes/dislikes is a really good "over/underscored"-radar regarding the general opinion.

Not necessarily. There's a ton of viewership in Russia and Japan that could really boost the dislikes on the American skaters' programs given how they're ahead of their own skaters.

It was a good skate, but I wouldn't have given it more than 73 (and the lead). Pogo would have been about 71.5. Wagner about 70.5. Medvedeva/Radionova about 69.5

This is such a fierce competition. Almost all inconsistent skaters are clean.

I'm so happy for Anna! After a rough season she finally shows her ability and how good this short program is.I was deeply touched by her breathtaking performance today.
Evgenia and Elena are also gorgeous. They are fighters!

Can't wait to see free programs

Boston Ice Rink Demon became sloppy tonight after a generous feast provided by the men.

There are no falls until you look down to no. 17 Chartrand who fell once.

In the top 24 who qualified for FS, there were only two falls.

It was a reduction of -1 to -2 for the 3F. But +1's across were very generous. However, obviously top skaters get gifted with +GOE whereas if it were a second-tier skater, surely the GOE would have be negative across the board.

The inflation was expected for Gold, but man that was some WE NEED A US WORLD CHAMPION DESPERATION-level PCS.
I expected this, kind of. I didn't expect Gracie to skate so well, but it's natural that the judges give high PCS to skaters who really get the crowd going.
And I haven't seen this SP better than she performed it today. The jumps were there, the flip wasn't too bad and she gave face and after the axel she got really into the performance.
I liked Anna best, but when she's skating clean I almost always like her best. I just think she's the most gorgeous 17 year old skater around. And an artist. The judges are not united when it comes to her, two judges gave her 7's and two gave her 9's.
Great competition! And I'm actually happy that Satoko was judged rather conservatively, I agree with that.
Ashley was great and she isn't very far behind point wise. So the FS is going to be so exciting! Can't wait.

Medvedeva's had plenty of dislikes before. It's worked pretty well for me. Gold seems to be a dislike magnet though.

Judges clearly didn't know what to do with Anna; looks like a few lowballed her in PCS because they didn't dare to put her above Evgenia.

I'm more of a nervous wreck for Saturday night than I was before. American ladies with a shot at medaling after the SP??? :drama: I can't handle it!

And the haters gonna hate hate hate hate....

Hopefully Shake it Off plays during the warmup again on Saturday! People can complain about that in their conspiracy theories too!

It's more like the majority of them did know what to do with Anna, then we have some who gave her 7s. These judges should just be fired, and this doesn't hold for only Anna. If you have no sense of objectivity you should not be judging anything, much less something on this scale.

Oh I agree that Gracie deserves the lead, and the GOE on her 3F was not crazy out of line, just a bit out of line. It was the PCS that was the ridiculousness. That program was the best Gracie has ever performed it, but it was not worthy of that level of components and home inflation clearly played into that. Then again, the Russians were rather overscored themselves.

The differences between the top skaters is about correct, but everyone needs to be like 1-2 points lower.

Ladies is now like the old ice dance. A complete farce.

We got an absolutely amazing competition and yet it's still a farce?

OK then. From now on I guess there's no point taking anybody's opinion seriously. I suppose opinions are truly like assholes, all are ******.

She always seems one step away from greatness but it looks like she has found herself in a place that if she messes up just a tiny bit it is reason enough to cast her into the dungeons. She is going to have to do some real soul searching this off season (even if this one isn't over yet) and find a way to rehabilitate her reputation.
