2016 World Championships Ladies Free Skate

I was in the arena tonight and what a treat!! Great skating by all the ladies with the last group really rocking it. So proud of Ashley!!

I thought the judging was right on with the exception of Gabby. I'd have her lower given the mistakes she made. Mao was lovely, but really, really slow. The program looked very labored and without the speed and energy of the top girls.

Best World's ladies competition in years, and like others have said, worth every penny! :hap10:

Mao was indeed very slow comparing to other girls, but her movement also had certain refinement and intensity/depth, I thought really resonated with this particular piece of music. just my 2 cents from my live experience.

Seriously Mao scoring PCS like that relative to Wagner and Medvedeva. What an insult.

Right? But hey, Mao skated earlier and wasn't seen as a top contender this time, so that's why her score was low.

If these two girls could get those PCS on their favored days with their inferior skills, imagine what Mao would get if the situation was right.

What I loved about this year's World judging was that PCS is now truly appreciating a variety of skating styles.

geeeshh. I think she is being a little hard on herself.
It is a lesson Gracie, take from it what you can and use it for next time. You'll be that much stronger.

She certainly is being too hard on herself but after years of pretty princess pc remarks these ones were real refreshing. Showing more of what the real Gracie is truly like and not some over trained seal by her handlers. It really does make her more likable :o:

Quick question: have you seen any Scheherazade by let's say Bolshoi or Mariinsky? :) The story goes way deeper and more complex than you just described... ;)

Indeed it does, but that's not going to register to a general audience. Even then, she didn't portray ANYTHING, not even the basics of the story. It was a clean skate to backing music. it's wasn't even the most cursory of portrayals. It was a nothing program.

To those who said Gracie should be mad at herself, I just saw this brief interview where she seems like she is just about done.

Even the reporter is like, "Damn gurrrll..."

While it hurts to see her like this I'm glad she's not just trying to smile and say "it's a step in the right direction" and "compared to last year there were some improvements" all that stuff. She had an opportunity and it didn't happen. She was well-trained and it didn't come together when it counted. She should be upset, be mad, brace herself for the less-than-pleasant things that may come her way whether it's disappointed people, social media backlash, or hearing the "it's okay"s that she never wanted to have to hear in the first place. Let the emotions run their course and then decide where to go from here. Yeah she feels low and that's understandable but the judges, the USFSA, and everyone who saw her practices and short program know she's got the goods.

This is what was, and still is, one of the worst things about figure skating judging.

Mao's PCS should have been sky high with that mature, ethereal Madame Butterfly. She has proven herself over and over again. She has more artistry in her little pinky than 99% of the other girls in the field have in their whole body.

Oh poor Gracie. I've not always been her biggest fan but I feel so bad for her. Was in the arena tonight and honestly, her mistakes weren't that bad. It's just that everyone else was very clean.

Another friend saw her walk out after and said that she was crying. :(

Poor Gracie :( Her future is bright and she is just 20! Imo, she is the most talented lady in the US now and just needs to work on her interpretation/presentation. She almost medalled at home, must be super hard for her:no:

Agreed. There have been years where her skate would have taken gold. It was an unusually clean night.

Well, that doesn't apply to ever skater (e.g. Chan's PCS didn't suffer much). Some skaters just tend to be underscored even when they skate relatively well like Mao, Akiko, Daisuke (when they were still competing).

Fine if you don't want to compare Yuna's WR with Evgenia's score because the calculations are different, lets use her Les Mis or Adios Notions then, is that fair now? And if you really think Evgenia's LP deserves more than this two programs, well, Amen then.

Honestly its not even possible to compare scores across 2 events anymore let alone 2-3 seasons. Since the start of Sochi season judges have been pushing the scores of the younger skaters up and up to match the then veterans who were still skating. Now that most veterans have retired, judges dish out very high PCS for the current top skaters. Ashley getting a 73 in this event is not comparable to Yuna getting a 73/74 in PCS at another event and vice versa. The judges are just now giving very high PCS to the best skaters of the night. There is no benchmark really for scores.

Well, it suffered a bit in that he didn't get sky-high PCS that he should be getting because Patrick Chan is a skating god. So even Patrick suffers.

Another thing is that if you are the only skater from a country, then you automatically get higher PCS for just turning up. Canada only has one male skater that is a top contender so Patrick has an easier time with PCS in that respect, whereas Japan has so many skaters who are great and they suffer as a result. Should this happen? No, absolutely not. But it does.

I feel bad for Gracie. She had a chance and she blew it. But I really admire her because she worked very hard for this event. The SP was great, and she still managed to finish 4th place. However I completely understand why she is feeling really down and I can sympathize. I'll say nothing more about this.

Also, the World Standings are now updated.

Some notable things or big changes to point out:
1. Liza still in 2nd.
2. Ashley moved up to 4th and Mao moved up to 10th.
3. Gracie and Evgenia are tied for 6th.

Agreed. Yes, she made 2 mistakes... I think it was more about other people skating clean (and her not being able to put out a clean long in an international competition). She couldn't afford to make ANY mistakes. If only this was like the men's competition where everyone made mistakes (except Javi) she easily could've won.
