Grand Prix 2016-17 News/Speculation

CoR: Weaver and Poje / Chock and Bates :)

An interesting question about Virtue and Moir. By ISU ranking points I don't think they qualify for anything except a host pick for Skate Canada. But isn't there a "returning Olympic medalists" exemption?

There is rule 2.1 (c) which states:

“Come-Back” Skaters/Couples: Skaters/Couples who were previously seeded (placed 1 to 6 within the past 10 years at a ISU World Figure Skating Championships) and subsequently did not participate in one or more competitive seasons will be given priority consideration to re-enter the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating for selection of up to 2 assignments if they commit in writing to participating in two ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating events and if such return is announced and confirmed by the date of the annual Selection Meeting. Such so called “Come Back Skaters/Couples” will not substitute any of the Seeded Skaters/Couples, mentioned under a). “Come Back Skaters/Couples” must not fulfil the requirements of the minimum Grand Prix score and would be considered for selection as an Organizing Member Choice. A come back under this clause is allowed only once in their competitive career for any Skater/Couple.

I don't think they have used the comeback clause before so they should be eligible for it now.

When even are the assignments going to be announced? Like since Worlds is over (Though we still have the TCC left), basically nothing else huge left (besides the TCC). And I'm anxious to see who's going to where and more importantly, where the heck Skate America is going to be....like hurry up USFSA!

Assignments aren't usually announced until June. We probably have at least 10 weeks to wait.

Oy yoi vey...

I hope Skate America's location will be announced sooner than that lol...I mean I know it won't be announced after the assignments, but still....

Arguably waiting for your baby to come out is far worse than waiting for GP assignments, as I found last year. The GP assignments were speedier than my baby. Maybe I should see if she'll start walking before the GP assignments come out this year. We'll see who is speedy now, ISU!

Remember, the ISU will update the World Rankings to remove the 2013/2014 data and reduce the 2014/2015 to 70% of its value.
That will change who is in the top 24 for each discipline. I took a quick pass at those calculations.

Sincere question: aren't rankings updated after anouncement of GP assingments?

Thanks guys I will make the changes in a little bit!!

Also Russia isn't allowed a max # of ladies per se, but a max number of spots- if all the ladies got 2 spots they could only have 9, but they can have more with some only having 1 spot. With that said if someone is displaced it will be Artimieva- Serafima is guaranteed a spot, Artimieva is not.
So this means that the maximum amount of single's GP spots per country is 18, correct?
How about pairs and ID?

If McNamara/Carpenter move to seniors, will USFSA give them a host spot for Skate America possibly?

If they move to seniors they're guaranteed 2, actually, as JW champs, so I don't think USFSA would waste the host spot on them. They might very well have to use it on Hawayek/Baker or another team who won't be guaranteed 2 (or even 1, maybe if they choose to give it to Thomas/Eton for example)

Oh sweet! I seriously hope they do move to seniors. They won all the junior competitions they did last season they did this season, so it's kind of silly to remain in juniors....though yes the US field is very deep already.

True. Cause Anna and Sergey got two this season. One which was Skate America.

I also hope for this though sadly based on their comments I don't think they will :(

What comments? Where?

I don't know of any especially recent comments but it was my understanding that they had said quite definitely that they plan to do juniors until they age out. I will go see if I can find it in their fan fest and come back :)

Re Lorraine/Quinn:

Sorry if my posts earlier in the season were what you possibly had in mind??

What I am talking about:
Earlier I could have sworn that they said in an interview during the JGPs that they would remain juniors as long as possible ... and over several months, I referred back to that in more than one post (probably in more than one thread). Then someone politely asked me to provide a link -- and when I went back to look for the quote, I discovered that I could not find it :hopelessness:. So I fell on my sword and apologized -- I guess I had been hallucinating.

I thought that Junior World champions are guaranteed only one GP spot??
But I can't find the ISU language for that either ....

You may have been thinking of this one: http://web.icenetwork.com/news/2015/08/07/141718768/the-inside-edge-dance-duo-aims-for-mature-look where she says: "We're still pretty young, so we have time," McNamara said. "The jump from junior to senior is the biggest jump you can make in skating. We have time to grow and develop as juniors, so we can get as much experience as possible before making that jump."

However, that article is from last summer (August), so there is a chance they either have changed their mind or that she wasn't speaking wholly literally about the 'as much experience as possible' and was instead just explaining why they stayed junior this year. I can't find anything more recent or more definite than this.

Actually now reading over the ISU doc I am not even sure they are guaranteed one spot based on their placement at Junior Worlds but they'd be guaranteed one based on their seasons' best score, so maybe they'd get the SkAm host pick after all if they go senior?
