2016-2017 Programs by Discipline

Tarah Kayne and Danny O'Shea
both programs choreographed by Judy Blumeberg.

OMG! I am beyond thrilled about Tarah/Danny being choreographed by Judy Blumberg! I have been wishing and hoping for months that they'd get programs from another choreographer. I've been thinking they need some small choreographic touches that leap out at you and make you go "ooooh" and also add complexity to the programs. They have such strong basic pair elements, including speed and especially their connection.:luv17::luv17:

March Slave with Song of India should be awesome. I also really liked the explanation of how they have re-tooled their twist to get height first, then rotation. It's going to be really exciting to see the results of that. If they can get a 3T combination, that will also be great.

I love this article. I especially like how they talked about their Music of the Night choice, and how it helped them take their performance values up a notch and connect better with the audience, and why it worked that way for them.

Take that, everyone who scorned their music choice. ;)

Ashley is redoing her long, as per Snapchat

redoing or reusing?

Edit.... found it on snap chat

She explains that it is a new long... the first was good, but not right so they are starting over, but she used the word new more than once.

I am starting to wonder if she decided to do GOT afterall.

Oh, geez! I thought at first everyone was talking about MR part 3. Thank gawd that's not the case. I saw on Insta a few days ago that she was on her way to Toronto. Perhaps to see Shae Lynn?

It is obviously not for exhibition. Very unusual choice of music for competition program.

I was actually thinking when the trailers for the new Star Wars came out how the right edit of that music could be very affecting and powerful for figure skating.

Particularly this music here:

It will be really interesting to see what Satoko does with it. I think it could really challenge her which is what she needs. Last years long was just beautiful but seeing it live in Boston she's so tiny she needs to be pushed to be bigger on the ice.

I feel like coaches need to start banning warhorses to encourage their student to show more creativity in music choices (Cause I'm assuming the skaters are the ones making the music choices...).

This is an interesting question: Who picks the music? I've always assumed it was a joint decision, perhaps the choreographer presenting several options, and skater and coach pick one.

I've strayed from the boards during the off season, but I dropped by to for this thread to see the new programs.

I've got to say... for the most part, I'm disappointed. The canon of acceptable skating music should be expanded. So very little originality, and I don't count it as "original" if that definition is "it's been done by pairs and dance teams, but not singles" or "no one has skated to that in a few years."

From Pogrebinsky/Benoit offcial site:
Short Dance: “Trouble” performed by Elvis Presley, written by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller (Blues & Swing)
Free Dance: Persian Legend of Layla & Majnun; selections from “Sadko” by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov; “The Feeling Begins” by Peter Gabriel

It depends. Sometimes the choreographer, at lower levels sometimes the coach, and sometimes the skater. Usually there is input from each other.

Of course, if you are Max Aaron, nobody believes that you chose the music, it simply HAD to be the choreographer forcing it on you...

oh, gawd, karne, give it a rest. You wear me out. "Nobody believes...." Please. Several, including me, have defended Max, what he chose and why. Maybe you have us all on ignore. Or maybe you're so charmed by your own bitter sarcasm that you just don't care.

Adam Rippon-

SP: Let Me Think About It (choreo- Buttle)
FS: Bloodstream (choreo: Schwimmer)

Sneak peeks

Wow, Adam's going full EDM for the SP. Whew...that's going to be interesting since the music is sort of staccato and has a driving beat. I can't recall Jeff Buttle doing anything to this kind of music...should be interesting to watch.

Not so hot on the FS, personally, but it's a good contrast from the SP: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XIJHg1XWR7o

Well I think i am glad Let Me Think About It is the SP... because I think it is way too repetitive for a four+ minute program. Honestly I think it will be tough as is... but I am looking forward to seeing it.

Initial reaction is that he's going to sort of bomb with those musical selections. SP music is too specific to interpret in a competitive program and LP music too whiny.
