Lol, thanks for letting me know. Just cleared it!
Of course not, it was my lame attempt at humor. I should have said, "Patrick is a hardy Canadian who wears shorts in 47 degrees F / 8.7 degree C weather."
Thanks for sharing! Blue and gray shirts today, I see.
Pronounced "Chün Chün" with the umlaut in the "u", like the German "ü". It's the Mandarin pronunciation of the last character in his Chinese name, 群, which means "group".
but what kind of SHHH sound is it??? group???????? what does his full chinese name mean... omg... i feel like a bad fan for not knowing these important things.thanks... i got the ü nowbut what kind of SHHH sound is it??? group???????? what does his full chinese name mean... omg... i feel like a bad fan for not knowing these important things.
Not at all - this is just the other side of Patrick. The Q is pronounced CH as VB and I said.
His Chinese name 陳偉群 is pronounced Chen Wei-Chün in Mandarin and Chan Wai-Kuan in Cantonese. 偉群 means "great group".
It may also mean greater than the masses or great one among the masses, a stand out. Just Patrick 仔 to Mrs Chan.
Yep, Patrick 仔 is the best nickname of all.
4everchan,
To to go into detail, 群 is in the second tone in Mandarin. You can hear it pronounced here when they announced his name for the 2010 GPF:

and we were assigned "chinese" names... so we share a character
patrick and I have a similar chinese characterat one point I tried to learn a bit of mandarin
and we were assigned "chinese" names... so we share a character

and i listened to the youtube... that's pretty much how i thought it would sound.... funny how they call him by his chinese name rather than Patrick ... i mean... names don't get translated?
Sending my good thoughts and wishes to Patrick and Team Canada. I'm wishing them all the success, good skatings they can have and best of luck in CoC

That's cool that you two share a character. He also shares a character with one of my family members.
It's actually correct for them to call him by his Chinese name there (after all, it is part of his legal name, too). Yes, people do transliterate his name Patrick into Chinese, but it's better to use his given Chinese name. I was disappointed when they didn't use his Chinese name at 4CC, because they didn't translate any names into Chinese or use Chinese names at all, not even for Boyang Jin or Han Yan.
Okay, now I must go start a new blog post for CoC and go to bed...
Funnily enough his Chinese fans like to call him 群仔 sometimes haha
It's very Cantonese to call boys and young men by the last word in their names followed by 仔. Sort of like adding a "y" to an English name. They call Hong Kong movie stars like that too and the names stick into their fifties.
I like the Chinese prediction of the COC podium too and may Patrick's hard work and steadfastness bring him the luck of 2 clean programs with 4S landed. And may his luck continue with adding another quad in the SP, culminating in 5 quads in 2 clean programs at Worlds 2017 and 2018 Olympics.

I'm reading the Chinese boards on Baidu for CoC, a lot of Chinese fans are thankful because they finally get to see Patrick skate live but most of them are cheering on Boyang because they know it's Boyang's only chance at a GPF spot. Some of them said it would be really great if the podium was all Chinese like 4CC again. On a Photo of Patrick, Han Yan and Jin Boyang they joked that th(e podium has arrived.
Their reaction to Patrick drawing first for the mens is that they're really amused and they're saying he has a lot of luck. Hopefully he'll go clean.
VB is on a roll. I love your enthusiasm. I am a bit more careful in my predictionsI think things need to be very gradual for Patrick for him to feel the growth in a positive and organic way. I like that he is skating first. It's not like the judges will have to "lowball" him.... it's Patrick Chan after all! I think he will do well in the SP. Otherwise, Han Yan and I will have broken hearts
