Patrick Chan

Dear Viv,

Please clear your PM box ASAP . I try to send you a PM today in regarding Patrick's competition this week and thanks in advance .

Lol, thanks for letting me know. Just cleared it!

Er, Patrick wearing shorts has no correlation to the weather. :)

Of course not, it was my lame attempt at humor. I should have said, "Patrick is a hardy Canadian who wears shorts in 47 degrees F / 8.7 degree C weather."

Practice photos in the morning of 17.11

Thanks for sharing! Blue and gray shirts today, I see.

Pronounced "Chün Chün" with the umlaut in the "u", like the German "ü". It's the Mandarin pronunciation of the last character in his Chinese name, 群, which means "group".

Not at all - this is just the other side of Patrick. The Q is pronounced CH as VB said.

His Chinese name 陳偉群 is pronounced Chen Wei-Chün in Mandarin and Chan Wai-Kuan in Cantonese. 偉群 means "great group".

His Chinese nicknames make use of the 群 character, like 群群 (Chün Chün), or Chün Boss, etc.

It may also mean greater than the masses or great one among the masses, a stand out. Just Patrick 仔 to Mrs Chan.

Yep, Patrick 仔 is the best nickname of all. :)

4everchan,

To to go into detail, 群 is in the second tone in Mandarin. You can hear it pronounced here when they announced his name for the 2010 GPF:

patrick and I have a similar chinese character :) at one point I tried to learn a bit of mandarin ;) and we were assigned "chinese" names... so we share a character ;)

and i listened to the youtube... that's pretty much how i thought it would sound.... funny how they call him by his chinese name rather than Patrick ... i mean... names don't get translated?

That's cool that you two share a character. He also shares a character with one of my family members. :)

It's actually correct for them to call him by his Chinese name there (after all, it is part of his legal name, too). Yes, people do transliterate his name Patrick into Chinese, but it's better to use his given Chinese name. I was disappointed when they didn't use his Chinese name at 4CC, because they didn't translate any names into Chinese or use Chinese names at all, not even for Boyang Jin or Han Yan.

Okay, now I must go start a new blog post for CoC and go to bed...

Sending my good thoughts and wishes to Patrick and Team Canada . I'm wishing them all the success, good skatings they can have and best of luck in CoC :cheer: .

Funnily enough his Chinese fans like to call him 群仔 sometimes haha

I think it's because 4CC was in Taiwan, they really only translate Japanese names because the kanji just translates right over. Unrelated note I love Mao Asada's name in Chinese, she was named really well haha (her name means always centred for those who don't know).

I'm reading the Chinese boards on Baidu for CoC, a lot of Chinese fans are thankful because they finally get to see Patrick skate live but most of them are cheering on Boyang because they know it's Boyang's only chance at a GPF spot. Some of them said it would be really great if the podium was all Chinese like 4CC again. On a Photo of Patrick, Han Yan and Jin Boyang they joked that the podium has arrived.

Their reaction to Patrick drawing first for the mens is that they're really amused and they're saying he has a lot of luck. Hopefully he'll go clean.

From COC Weibo

At the Mens practice which was first, Chen Weiqun (Patrick Chan) the 3 time World Champion all eyes are on, first ever Mens Worlds medalist from China Jin Boyang, and first Chinese COC Mens champion Yan Han, were all in the first group. Then during draw ceremony, the three sit together congenially.

It's very Cantonese to call boys and young men by the last word in their names followed by 仔. Sort of like adding a "y" to an English name. They call Hong Kong movie stars like that too and the names stick into their fifties. :)

I like the Chinese prediction of the COC podium too and may Patrick's hard work and steadfastness bring him the luck of 2 clean programs with 4S landed. And may his luck continue with adding another quad in the SP, culminating in 5 quads in 2 clean programs at Worlds 2017 and 2018 Olympics.

VB is on a roll. I love your enthusiasm. I am a bit more careful in my predictions :) I think things need to be very gradual for Patrick for him to feel the growth in a positive and organic way. I like that he is skating first. It's not like the judges will have to "lowball" him.... it's Patrick Chan after all! I think he will do well in the SP. Otherwise, Han Yan and I will have broken hearts ;)

Patrick's competing at COC certainly draws a lot of attention and excitement from the Chinese officials and fans. He was at the Beijing GPF in 2010 which he won with 2 clean programs with quads, setting up for his frst Worlds title. At the time, he wasn't very popular in China where the current favorites were the three Japanese brothers (Takahashi, Oda and Kozuka) and Johnny Weir. But he gained fans who were charmed and impressed. He never competed in COC due to the back to back schedule with SCI so this is the first time, naturally creating excitement and anticipation in China.

I wish him great success in China, winning competitions and hearts.

I believe in positivity. Gains do not come from pains. Limiting beliefs do not generate but only limit success. Aim high so even under-achievement will not be low. Success comes with confidence.

Patrick's plan and strategies have always been gradual and incremental. In contrast to Hanyu, who includes all the ambitious elements in his programs from the beginning of the season, with hope to skate the ultimate perfect programs sometime during the season. He often does achieve this goal but not necessarily at Worlds at the end of the season. Patrick, OTOH, includes his newly acquired jump only after achieving a 80% success rate at practice, and raises his technical difficulty with adjusted choreography through the season, aiming to peak at the end of the season. He learns from the experience of each event and grows along his journey. He often peaks at the Canadian National with all home crowd support, but does very well at Worlds soon after.

Patrick's journey is cautious and organic in its nature by design. He is not reckless technically, mentally, nor with his health. Wishing him to succeed is not jinxing him or encouraging him to take undue risks or to become arrogant or complacent. I believe my hopes for him align with his mindset, plans, and goals. Aim high but don't be attached. I've always been the most accepting of all his results, n'est ce pas?
