2016-2017 State of Canadian Figure Skating

Agreed. The sloppy fact checking and pretentious writing are bad enough, but what is really unforgivable is the tone she inserts into the article, which clearly shows her bias. Poor writing to say the least. Yes, I'm a big WeaPo fan, but I would have the same reaction no matter which skaters she was writing about. Is she a freelancer or is she actually a staff writer?

I particularly like the "Virtue and Scott" in the paragraph about Nationals. And again about V/M "Silver in Sochi had not set well with them as career swansong." 1. It should be "sat well" not "set well", which refers to the fit of clothing. 2. I feel like there needs to be a word before 'career', a career swansong, their career swansong.

I know these are small things, but her job is to write, and in combination with the factual errors, it feels a bit sloppy even apart from her tone.

First, Balde's commercial was great - glad for him though I am not sure how identifiable he is other than with Canadian figure skating enthusiasts.

Second, I am a bit fed up with the crtiicsms of Gilles - she is n't that bad of a skater and comparable to Gabrielle from P/C who should be knocked more on this website if Piper is being crtiiczed.

Third, here is my take. The big interests will be who gets the second men's spot after Chan. Balde? Nadeau? Firius? Nam? Or I think the front runner Reynolds? Also, who makes the ladies' team - Osmond, Daleman or Chartrand..I think there is more intererst in the first two reading this site. Dance and Pairs seems set - while Moore Towers and Marinaro could win bronze with their late start due to injuries and how I/M are improving and getting stronger I hope to see S and B regain their form and start giving d and r a run for their money. History could be made with Chan and it will be fun to see V and M regain their title mostl likely. I also wonder what Zueva is going to do - my guess stay in the states with so many skaters leaving Chan with Epstein or Johns - probably Epstein?

We're over 1000 posts guys. Yay!

About that TorStar Weaver/Poje article - I think the editor needs some blame for the spelling and factual errors. This is Rosie's normal tone when it comes to figure skating so I am not surprised. Earlier this season she wrote a piece on Kaetlyn Osmond and prostitution. :slink:

To counter that article have a better one by Beverley Smith: https://bevsmithwrites.wordpress.com/2017/01/15/weaver-and-poje-home-at-last/

Europe on Ice's Hiro Yoshida did an article on Piper & Paul: https://europeonice.com/2017/01/15/gilles-and-poirier-reach-for-the-top/

some good points in your post skater boy...

for all it's worth : balde is a star.... and will be a major factor in pro tours.... his unique look, skating skills and awesome backflip get him invited to galas and exhibitions no matter how he actually ranks...

I think balde is probably more known than most Canadian skaters... whether or not he's never actually won a medal in Canada...

interesting fact : when he won a Nebelhorn in 2015, he had never worn a medal in Canada as a senior... yet... he won an international event...

Reminder: The Canadian Tire Canadian Skating Championships [aka nationals] start TOMORROW, Monday January 16, 2017

I encourage everyone who can drop in to join us on the Canadian Nationals event discussions.....

Here's the SC weblink again... https://skatecanada.ca/events/2017-...kating-championships/#tab-f9538e23065993653e9

The livestreaming tab has been added [mainly for Novice and Junior events]. And a live scoring button is now there as well.

Livestreaming can also be accessed directly from the Skate Canada channel page on DailyMotion here...
http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x5...ian-tire-national-skating-championships_sport

Novice short programs for ice dance [10:00 am], women [1:20 pm], and men [3:40 pm] kick it off the event....

Junior Men will start their SPs at 6:00 pm / 1800h..
.. For those who have not yet seen Stephen Gogolev, who just had his 12th birthday in December, I respectfully suggest the time is now. 3As and quads will be delivered, but we won't see him in ISU international junior competitions for another two seasons. As the start order is by random draw, the top ranked juniors are fairly dispersed.

Stephen and some other Central Ontario skaters are in the first flight....including Gabby's younger brother Zachary Daleman, Conrad Orzel [bronze at Challenge], and Bruce Waddell who joined Stephen on the last year's novice podium with a bronze. Matthew Markell of Eastern Ontario who took silver on the novice podium is in the second flight. In the third flight we'll see Challenge silver medallist Eric Liu of AB/NWT/NT and Ilya Kolver of CO who took fourth place. Junior men should be well worth watching....

Junior Ice Dance SDs will start at 8:45 pm.

:cheer: :hap10: :cheer:

Wait....what?!

https://www.thestar.com/sports/skat...es-her-to-second-at-skate-canada-dimanno.html

If you don't want to click it then a relevant excerpt:

At 17, Kaetlyn Osmond was a prostitute in her Sweet Charity routine: Sassy.

At 20, she’s a prostitute in her Sous le ciel de Paris, Milord composite routine: Bawdy.

Not saying this is a recurring theme or anything. But maybe at some future date, if the life of Xaviera Hollander is ever put to opera, Osmond might embrace the role of The Happy Hooker — the title of the lady’s 1971 autobiography — on ice.

Certainly the former Canadian women’s figure skating champion immensely enjoys embodying the streetwalker-from-the-docks Milord character, as warbled by Edith Piaf, in her short program for this season. Osmond un-spooled the rendition with tremendous polish and flair — 10 points over her career-best for a short competition — on Friday at Skate Canada, bringing the Hershey Centre crowd to its feet.

And a nice quote by Chartrand at the end. :rolleye:

honestly, about that 'thing' written (I can't even name it as an article/publication, because it would harm all good journalists' ethics and proper work) - I am shocked that someone has an audacity and flair to publish this. I often wonder how twisted this kind of 'authors' mind is and how it actually works to come up with such nonsense and word vomit...

ETA - moreover, it seems that a lot of people can't stand the fact that Kaetlyn is back with such strength and poise for competition, healthy and successful, with such great scores. It is mind-boggling for me why these ppl can't keep their traps shut and let her be if they have nothing constructive to say, especially about her performance qualities, presence and expression (which are top notch level)...Haters will hate, dogs will bark and she will get her stuff going
