Patrick Chan

My week got busier than I anticipated, but I’m finally posting about Patrick’s Nationals LP. IT MADE ME SO HAPPY!!!!! :hap57: :hap85: :yahoo:  (I’ll stop there with the emoticons, but I could go on). I already knew that he won and that he skated well, so I watched with peaceful joy. My first thought after it ended was, “Patrick did a clean LP!!!” (The 4T would have been nice and he’ll need it at Worlds, but honestly I didn’t mind the 3T one bit). My second thought was, “There is now a clean Journey in this costume that I’ll LOVE sharing with people, so goodbye forever to the old gray costume, except when I re-watch Chopin!!!" My third thought was, “4everchan and blueberryhill got to see this clean Journey LIVE and I’m so happy for them!!!" :ghug:

Other thoughts about the program:

-The AXELS were so spot on and GORGEOUS!!!!! The 3A+2T+2Lo was unexpected and refreshing.

-It’s wonderful to see the easier triples so secure as well and that Patrick has the energy and focus to do them beautifully.

-In this performance particularly, Patrick moved with such intention and conviction, making every moment count. As usual, even Patrick’s pauses were significant. Many skaters pause out of necessity (the stuff is hard to do), but Patrick’s brief pauses are not those kinds of pauses. He pauses to show balance and control of edges, and because the music tells him to, not because he needs to.

-THE SPINS!!!!! I’m so grateful that Patrick chooses spin variations that still look beautiful so he doesn’t look like a contortionist on ice, not to mention that they are fast and well-centered. In short, Dick Button would love them, as do I!

-There are so many photographic moments in this program that I can’t even count them!!! Patrick is pretty much always in a beautiful position. Such wonderful extension and poise all the way out to his fingertips.

-I agree with Eric: WOW!!!!!!!

I loved both interviews, but especially the longer one after the medal ceremony. I want to thank Patrick for wanting to and then choosing to conquer his fears by coming back. Blackbird, Chopin, and A Journey are three of my all-time favorite programs of his, which have all been since he came back. I’m probably going to do a whole blog post about what Patrick said there. I found it so inspiring, especially because he just figured it out recently, showing that he’s still learning. He’s barely mentioned in the “Who’s going to win the 2018 Olympics” thread, but I don’t care. That’s just a title, and nothing can take away from the SKATER that is Patrick Chan! He goes somewhere else when he skates well, and he takes us with him. I’m thrilled to have been taken there once again. I did see it “only” on a computer screen, but my oh my, it was sublime! :)

Since Patrick and Nathan are training buddies now, Nathan’s Nationals-winning LP (FIVE QUADS!) got me wondering what Patrick’s LP layout was when he won his first National Title (a great excuse to watch that program again ). Here’s the comparison:

Patrick’s First National Title

3A
3F+3T
3Lz
3Lz+2T+2Lo
3Lo
3S+2T
2A
3F

Nathan’s First National Title

4Lz+3T
4F
4T+2T+2Lo
4T
3A
4S
3Lz
3F+3T

They were both 17 years old, but two very different skaters, skating in two very different skating landscapes. Nathan was only eight years old when Patrick won his first Nationals, and Patrick is not that old. 2008 was the year Jeff won Worlds with NO quads, followed the next year by Evan with NO quads. It was a big deal in 2010 when Dai landed a 4F at Worlds, but he never attempted another one in competition. Even in 2014, the standard fare was two 4Ts and maybe one 4S. SPs with two quads didn’t even EXIST yet. What a difference four years makes.

The brothers Chen both won Nationals last weekend. :yay: During Nathan’s LP, my primary emotion was excitement, while during Patrick’s it was peaceful joy. Hats off to both of them!!!  :luv17:

thank you for your post and it's nice to know you were happy for us. i wish everyone from this fan fest were there. It was magical. Sublime. And, well, we got our wish : we now have on youtube, a clean LP from both the chopin and the journey.

we will be able to watch these over and over, as well as the wonderful TEB competition (sp+lp) and the many other excellent programs Patrick has skated over the years..

The way I see the Olympics : for some skaters, that's what they need to do, win at the Olympics, to be remembered...

But for some others, like Patrick, or Kurt Browning, they are bigger than the Olympics... they are beyond that. No need for a competition to establish that they are unique and will be remembered forever as skaters who have been instrumental in shaping the sport.

Evan Lysacek wouldn't be remembered without his win.... Patrick hasn't won and may not win a gold... (however, I think Canada has a good chance for the team event gold) but will always be remembered as one of the greatest skaters ever....

Even my darling Jeff Buttle, I think now people are more in awe with him as a brilliant choreographer... they forget how beautiful he was on the ice... and he did get a bronze in the Olympics behind legends of the sport!!!! and of course won the worlds in 2008.... He led the way to beautiful skating... into the COP... I feel he opened the door which was already opened by Kurt and Sandhu from 6.0 era who brought great skating skills to Canadian skaters....no need to say much about Kurt's unbelievable style but for Sandhu, just look at his positions.... his spins, etc... he had a thorough training in ballet... .i think our boys followed that path and developed what male skating (at least in Canada) is all about now... gorgeous skating skills, + content....

I am still on my high from seeing him live... i guess i will stop my banter for now... I was like... "what are you writing exactly right now????" "are you making any sense?" omg... and i haven't even had a drink yet LOL ;)

Happy Rooster year Patrick and all fans at Golden Skate ;) COCCCCCCK COOOOOOOO RICCCCCKOOOOO

:2thumbs: to all of this!!!!!

And, although Sunday Morning is not my favorite of Patrick's Exs, I enjoy seeing that he has such a good time skating it. I tell you what, he sure makes skating look like fun! When he finished, Tracy simply declared, "Patrick Chan!" 'Nuff said.

What a great page in our thread today! Totally fitting for Chinese New Year, and I wish you all a prosperous good one!

Thank you, Skatingfan4ever and 4everchan and the other fans here who went to see Patrick and shared your experiences with us. It's so great to get a firsthand account!

I finally had a chance to create a Chinese New Year graphic for Patrick. Whether he's the Blackbird or the Rooster, he will fly high this year! :agree:

https://twitter.com/PCSkatingFan/status/825547675630137345

With more new photos of Patrick being posted on Twitter, I will be making updates to my various competition blog posts this weekend. Y'all keep celebrating!

My third thought was, “4everchan and blueberryhill got to see this clean journey LIVE and I’m so happy for them!!!" :ghug:

Thank you so much for your generous spirit. :thank: It is exciting to say I was there when Patrick skated that. My New Year's wish to all of you is that everyone here will have their chance to experience the same thing - see Patrick in competition! :luv17:

I had posted after seeing Patrick's Thursday practice session and how emotional I was while I watched it. I was so glad to see and FEEL that because during the actual lp competition my emotions were totally different. I felt nervous excitement and the competition aspect didn't let me enjoy the beauty of the Patrick's skating as much. After the lp finished, while we were all giving Patrick a standing ovation I said to the two ladies in front of me "I was too nervous to enjoy the program live, but I'll enjoy it for eternity thanks to youtube!" :yahoo:

This whole competition I have been trying to avoid looking at the giant monitor and instead watch the skater on the ice live. But I remember as Patrick settled into his opening pose I was watching the monitor to see his facial expression for a clue of how he was feeling. As he closed his eyes I calmed down a bit. The quad-triple was done in the corner that was not totally visible to me but I saw the great landing and I heard the audience erupt. The triple axel followed but for me the most exciting moment of the lp was the quad sal. I actually bounced a couple of inches in my seat and squealed "quad sal" and my brother sitting next to me laughed. I really didn't care after that because Patrick landing those three jumps in a program was my goal for him this competition.

My biggest disappointment of the Nats was that those little toe steps of Patricks after the loop that I love so much were done at the other end of the rink. :( I knew the landings on a few of the jumps (the second axel and the lutz) were not perfect but he was landing them! After he landed the flip and started the spin I was a little sad because I knew that he would be starting the step sequence and the program would be over. The one moment that always gets me is in the ss where he puts his hand on his heart and coincidentally that's where there was spontaneous applause. I guess others feel the same way. As he skated past our section towards the K'n'C I noticed that he seemed quite emotional.

Skatingfan4ever is right about the beauty of the performance being reflected in the countless photographic moments in his program - or should I say programs. I'd like to point out something that I saw during Patrick's Sunday Morning at the gala. At 2:22 the two silhouettes in the background are Tessa and Scott. At 2:32 Chiddy points to his left and that was to Scott - I saw Scott doubling over in laughter when Patrick did that. I just think it's so cool to see Chiddy having fun with his teammates and to see the camaraderie between them. :)

Thanks for sharing. I love hearing that Patrick looks so relaxed at this Nationals! You are so fortunate to be able to watch him skate in person!!!

Yes I'm very fortunate. It was made possible because one of my brothers lives in Ottawa. My brother is calm, level-headed and very knowledgable on many sports. He does not follow figure skating but did accompany me to the entire competition and he also sat through the 2014 Nationals. Right after Patrick's fs as he gave Chiddy a standing ovation he said this to me - "I don't know very much about figure skating but even I know that was good!" Looks like Chiddy gained another fan! :agree:

what a beautiful report dearest bbhill :)

what i loved the most about patrick's gala was his jeans ... i know... i am a shallow man:palmf:

Here's another article where Patrick and the other guys talked about the rink being small:

http://ottawacitizen.com/sports/loc...-day-having-the-torch-passed-to-him-from-chan

I finally finished updating my post - as usual, I was able to collect some good stuff, including photos of ice conditions at the rink.

I had wanted to post after the sp but there was so little time. Given how Patrick skated in the lp, this may not even be relevant now but Vivley had brought up a couple of points. The ice conditions to my eyes were really good. It was the first time where I saw a person carry a tank strapped to his back and spray/fill in the gouges and ruts with water and then the zamboni would re-surface. The ice was examined again and patched if needed. Unlike Boston Worlds where the ice looked slushy and puddled, this one looked good.

The arena however was ... odd and must have taken some getting used to. That may have factored into some of the performances. From watching the videos, you wouldn't notice this because they only used one camera, from the judges side and facing the audience.

This image show why the skaters refer to it as "the corridor". The asymmetry could be a little disconcerting if you're not used to it.

Yes, Vancouver would be closest to me, plus it's where my SIL is from, so I will start making plans now. :agree:

It appears the 2018 Nationals will be held in Vancouver at the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre (located on the campus of UBC) from January 8-14, 2018. Vivley, since you are so good at unearthing info if you come across anything relevant that can help others with their planning please share. :) Think of it as the "Chiddy Trip Advisory". I really, really hope you and all other Chiddy lovers are seriously thinking of seeing him in competition at least once in your life!!!

i used to live 3 minutes away from thunderbird... now i m 6 hours away by plane....

what i can tell everyone : go go go... this is going to be patrick's last nationals... i know it may seem frivolous to take a few days off right after xmas holidays, and to do what? spend days sitting in a crowded arena... but Patrick is worth it..

tonight i showed some friend the CTV footage of the LP.. because well, they don't understand why i went there LOL (it was my bday and i treated myself with pchiddy)

and i was like.. "but this is so much better in person... see here.. it looks like nothing but he was actually turning left and right on one foot etc... and the speed omg.. he is so powerful.. ." then my friend (we had watched a few other skaters just before as i thought they may see the difference... said "omg we can hear his blades on the ice... " and i was OMG i love you!!!!! you get it!!!!
