2018 Olympic Figure Skating Team Event Day 1

Playlist, I did my estimates. Right now, as long as Kaetlyn delivers a clean SP and Gabby is clean in the FS, team Canada is loking good for gold. USA is still good for bronze. According to my estimates, even if Shoma did the FS for USA it wouldn’t make up the good made in pairs and dance.

That "as long as" is doing a lot of work for Kaetlyn and Gabby :slink:

he's always smiling and happy, no matter what he shows on the ice. i'm so tired not only of his performances, but also of his attitude. he also likes to say in an interviews that he did well, right after he skates a program full of falls and pops

Are not you tired of yourself to judge everyone and everything?

Honestly, Mirai has not been looking good in practice at all (neither has Karen but that is to be expected). I think it would be wise to switch out the ice dancers not the ladies. In terms of talent, all of the American ice dance teams deserve a medal. They are neck in neck in international competition and can pretty much guarentee (if they don't fall: 8/9 points) I can't say the same about US ladies.

I would say both Bradie and Mirai have been doing similarly in practices. Both have had some good moments and some issues getting their feet out from under them. Bradie has fallen and Mirai has hit her 3-3 consistently, so I’d say they’re evenly yoked at this point.

Karen has had a few issues, but she isn’t in contention for the team event either.

If the U.S. somehow manages to be close to silver medal contention because both Bradie and the Shibs do well, I can see them rethinking using Mirai in the LP and go with Bradie in the LP and thus opening the opportunity to switch ice dance teams and thinking that any one of C/B and H/D have potential place as well as a clean Shibs over B/S and C/L.

Yep. Also, I can easily see the U.S. and OAR tied after the short programs: Shibs 2nd, C/L 3rd, B/S 4th. Med 1st, Osmond 2nd, Kostner 3rd, Tennell 4th. Both teams would end up with 30 points. Really hinges on C/L staying ahead of B/S and Tennell staying ahead of Miyahara. Of course, Osmond could very well beat Med in short and make it even easier for the U.S. to keep up with OAR.

I think that Satoko is doing SP for Japan

Popping in to say I love how much the crowd enjoyed pairs, they were so in awe of the lifts and death spirals! Great audience, pairs must have been such a relief after what we saw in the men.

Anybody know if Kostner will do both the SP and LP for the TE if Italy qualifies for the final? That could also affect if the US decides to substitute ladies or not.

She couldn’t make up the points if she wanted to. Right now, even if Carolina is right behind Zhenia she can’t make up the difference for the men, pairs, and dance.

I was thinking the same thing!

I take it you'd be much happier to see a grown man cry.

My impression was that crowd was generally into programs, performances which was great for the atmosphere:)

Bradie is more consistent, National champion, and she has a higher personal best internationally (set this season). If the USA tries to make a (foolhardy probably) shot for Silver or if there are big implosions by our dance or men and they want to hold Bronze, they will probably use Bradie for both instead or Mirai for the LP. (I think it's forgone Bradie is doing the SP, but maybe I'm wrong).

Yes, it's been announced that Bradie's doing the short. thanks for clarifying your thoughts for me. :)

I've been thinking of it mostly from the ice dance point of view. I just think with our 3 teams who are consistently in the top 5 in the world, it would be better to give 2 teams the chance.

You gonna make up for their lack of sleep, having to skate so early in the morning?

And *all* of the individual events are held this early. This is garbage and stupid to the skaters - particularly those from countries like USA, Russia (well, Moscow at least), Canada who are adjusting to time zones anyway.

I respectfully disagree. I am not a Bradie Fan (horrible programs) but other than her very first practice. She has not fallen on jumps. She has been perfect. (as usual) But, we can see in the short program how she holds up under pressure. Mirai has been conistently under-rotating her triple axels and her triple-triples. Not falling does not equal doing well. UR are often worse than falls. In her runthroughs she has been doing 2T at the ends of her combinations. Not a great sign because Mirai usually does much better in practice than in competition.

Karen has looked terrible. Falling a lot but she is always like that in practice. Sometimes, she manages to do a lot better in competition.

They were cheering during the warm up, loving all the big Pairs tricks.

There were not many people there to watch the Men. Too early in the morning, which was probably a reason why the Men did so poorly.

Misha didn't do any good for Russia's chance at gold, but it's early. We'd have to expect more 30 points coming from ladies and pairs, and hope for B/S to try and get some 8s or 9s too if they want more than silver. Also, hope for whoever skates the free for men to get more than 6, and even then it's going to be tight.

Russia’s only hope for gold is for Osmond to bomb big time in the SP even then her lowest rank will be 5th and assuming Medvedeva will win SP. That will atleast close that gap but then they will still have to worry V/M’s 2-3 points over B/S. Best case scenario Russia will be going to free chasing Canada 2 points but i think realistically it will be 4-5 points. Its going to be hard for Russia. They can even find themselves fighting for a Silver. Hopefully this doesnt affect Kolyada so much going to the individual events

I take it you'd be much happier to see a grown man cry.

She was being sarcastic. He usually looks like he's going to a funeral before and after he skates. There is no passion for the sport, no fighting spirit. Just one bombed performance after another.

Good morning (!) everybody

Just letting you know that I have now updated my post to include the links to the coverage on the Eurosport Player.

Going to catch up on some ski jumping now, and then hopefully get some skating watched* before the Opening Ceremony starts.

*= Probably 4 Continents, which I haven't even started watching yet :o: :slink:
