2018 Olympic Figure Skating Team Event Day 3

No way Bradie would have placed 2nd. There is no way Bradie would have placed higher than Daleman even if she skated clean.

Bradie could’ve gotten the same score, but she wouldn’t have rattled Kaori like Mirai did. You see this all the time. Someone unexpected nails a super hard program and the following skater makes uncharacteristic errors. Kaori is normally a rock, but all the cheering made her lose focus. It’s the reason why Mirai was in 2nd and not 3rd.

I don't know how you can say that with certainty. Bradie got a 137 at Skate America, which yes, was homefield advantage, but I really don't see how it's a stretch for her to have gotten a similar score here, especially with the PCS boost she probably would have received at this point.

Like I said, they can't have predicted the results. To me, it would have made more sense to swap ice dance to reward the US's best discipline and have either Bradie or Mirai do both segments.

I honestly really hoped that scoring in PyeongChang would be different, better, fairer, and more accurate than in Sochi considering what happened then. But with the same people, same banana I guess.

Maybe, but I don't see how this was a certainty either or should have impacted the decision-making when putting the team together. I don't know if it's certain that Mirai rattled Kaori, or if maybe her first performance on Olympic ice was just nerve-wracking for her. Either seems possible.

Funny how things work out. Four years ago Mirai was devastated being left off the Olympic team now four years late she found herself in the position of having to have the skate of her life to hold off Italy. Life is funny isn't it? Good things come to those that wait indeed. :agree:

Didn't you see how low Bradie scored in SP?? Her PCS was all 7s. You can't compare Skate America to Olympics. It's different competitions.

Yes, I did see what Bradie scored in the SP. It was roughly 2 points higher than at Skate America. And I acknowledged the difference between Skate America and the Olympics.

Oh come now. They showed quite a bit of restraint. Only three 10's in components. Tsk Tsk. At this rate we might not even get the world record broken in the individual free.

This night was a fantastic end to the team event. So proud in particular of Mirai, Adam, and Team Canada! I'm glad they're doing so well. Congrats to all the skaters, and wish them the best of luck in the upcoming weeks

I'm actually not sure I disagree with anything you said here? I shouldn't have said trivial, since some of the movements are quite hard and it's always a challenge to match the musical structure while skating. I just meant - I could choreograph that and that's probably how I would choreograph it because I'm not great choreographer. It's an obvious structure. The same for the French - it's obvious choreography.

I think this season is probably exceptionally safe because ice dance is so subjective it's safest to go with kinda bland choreography, but to just perform it excellently - as both the V/M and P/C can do.

I wasn't judging the quality in terms of what should win though. In fact, if I were scoring, I wouldn't let my bias for one choreography or another really affect the results because this is a sport - I would judge how it's performed and V/M performed it fantastically, even if I don't care for it.

I'm not going to wade into the V/M vs P/C debate, I meant the French didn't have better choreography for me! I'll wait for the individual event to complain if I don't like the results heh.

I don't disagree that this is a season that many teams have played safe but I do think that V/M and P/C's choreo isn't such obvious choreography. In their LP both are skating to FS warhorses and yet to me both programs feel fresh. That V/M's content and performance is able to make any Moulin Rouge music but especially Tango de Roxanne feel fresh is a major accomplishment to me since the other MR programs quite annoy me. If all their choreo was obvious, the other competitors would have already done it but none of the others have. Does it follow choreographic conventions by matching the musical structure? Yes it does. It certainly doesn't challenge choreography as a discipline the way some avant-guard programs might. But that doesn't mean that it's obvious choreography to me.

Gabby: Another wonderful skate!! She looks really happy with this program! Good to see that!!

Carolina: Honestly I think this score per se is good. There is things to brush up a bit. Love the new dress!!!!

Kaori: A bit nervous at the beginning, but good recovery. Perhaps this is a good drill for the real thing? Let's see what happen next week. I don't think she should get more PCS then Mirai though.
