2018 Olympic Figure Skating Team Event Day 3

No. They got the same levels as V/M and B/S today. They actually beat B/S on +GOE. 112 with this panel is solid. Not to mention that on several elements they earned the highest.

And for everyone's bellyaching about them using Coldplay, if you look on Twitter people are EXCITED that they are doing Coldplay. The Shibs' premonition that casual fans/the masses would appreciate the selection turned out to be on-point. Not to mention the audience was ON BOARD. You think they were at Skate America, not the freaking Olympics in South Korea.

Good for them. Getting to skate so well before the main dance event should play in their favor. It has to be a confidence builder. The scoring gap between them and V/M seems very large - and the gap between B/S was small, so I wondered if they were held back. Perhaps those were appropriate point gaps in those performances, but I didn't see it. Of course, like I said, I'm not a good judge of levels and such.

I'm also very pleased for those who like Coldplay. They tweaked the music since USNats, didn't they?

They just showed Patrick’s FS again on NBC!! I’m so happy for him. Glad he finally got that well deserved medal :yay:

Honestly I’m enjoying the Figure Skating a lot and have seen some great performances but the way some of y’all can grumble on about the same thing from event to event has me kind of ignoring these threads.

My favorite moment of today was from snowboarding. When an American girl won a gold medal (I’ll leave the names out for spoiler purposes) and a Canadian athlete ran out to hug and congratulate her! That’s the spirit I’m talking about. Medals matter but the heart of the games is coming together and celebrating each other’s achievements.

Marai’s 3a was pretty bomb though and seeing so many ladies deliver so well in the team event has been really inspiring. I watched with a group of experienced skaters and some casual fans but the overall consensus was a sense of pride and awe with how far the sport has come all across the board. So many people can deliver the goods all across the board.

Anyone else really enjoy the team event as much as I did?

In general, aside from figure skating, there seems to be more of this type of spirit in the Winter Games than the summer.

And even more in the "younger daredevil" sports like snowboarding.

Well, I turned off the computer and GS postings and merely ENJOYED the last portion of the team event, the Free Dances. I recommend it. For one thing, I noticed that every single one of the five teams really made me feel something. That's why I watch figure skating, to feel something ... even when part of my brain is admiring technique that is so seamless that you're hardly noticing it.

I was just happy being In the Dream with each dance team!

Kana and Chris. Chris is pure charm, and he's definitely the emotional center of the team. It's as if his beautiful smile exists just in order to focus the attention on Kana, who is the Star in his book. I love their SD and FD this year. The Cherry Blossom music is so right, so light and dreamy; and with their Ice Dancing they convey the beauty.

Anna and Luca. This is my favorite program of theirs, by far. Life Is Beautiful is very difficult to capture the emotion because of the comedic elements that it's hard to forget from the movie. But rather than go comedic, Anna and Luca perfectly portrayed that section of the dance with joy and light. Anna, in particular, for me really embodied the divergent emotions in each section of the program ... and Luca supported her perfectly in it. The triumph and endurance at the end ... just wonderful. I'm so glad they'll be skating this program in their home country for Worlds.

Bobrova and Soloviev. I'm not quite there with this FD; but I really like their SD this year. However, I can see that they're feeling the story and portraying it with drama. I respect their sincerity. And I admire their 100% commitment to the program.

Maia and Alex. I feel like this performance of their FD reached the emotional level that they're been trying for all season. I simply loved it. For the first time, I felt like they transcended their incredible technique and matched their precision with the higher love or purpose that they've intended from the beginning. It was really gorgeous, and you could tell from Maia's face that she (well, they both) were so happy to capture the elusive moment.

Tessa and Scott. For me, this skate was also the outcome of a program that they've been developing and loving and smoothing and perfecting over time. Just what a skater's program is intended to do over the season. And I realize that I'm not typical on this board ... but until tonight, I'd seen the technique and the work too much to really get lost in the experience and emotion of their dance. With this performance, they brought me on board, right onto the ice with them; I felt the passion they have for it and totally understood why they wanted that music so much. Maybe their acting finally became seamless for me. Like watching actors who become the character, rather than watching actors and being aware that they're acting a role. Tessa and Scott lived it. They were just sublime in that moment.

I just watched Adam's skating again on NBC and I have to say I just love this program so much. I never been a fan of Adam but definitely I became a big fan tonight.

I guess we must have very different Twitter experiences. Most of my followers and my follows thought it was good in spite of Coldplay. I probably spend too much time on Irony Twitter tho lol.

It was based on a quick search on Twitter, but several people I follow made note of the music choice and that they liked it.

Just one tiny bit of ranting and then I'll shut up: it's not nothing new, nothing surprising, but still Zagitova's PCS is utterly outrageous. There's nothing in that program that should even come close to a 9 except for transitions. That first half was almost painful to watch, so labored and forced and unnatural it looked. That said, she skated great so: well done to her, shame on the judges.

It's such a joke the way this event has been approached, except by Canada. They are the only country who put together their very best team to get the highest placement they can in every event and the Gold medal is just being HANDED to them! Patrick did NOT skate well in this competition and Osmond didn't deliver in the SP either, Canada very certainly could have been displaced for Gold if the other countries had actually been trying. We should have seen Nathan Chen, Shoma Uno, and Dmitri Aliev competing in the LP.

Rippon only placing 3rd, Bradie only placing 5th in the SP, and the Shibutanis very possibly placing below the Russians and/or the Italians in the Free Dance, will knock USA out of the medals if Carolina Kostner delivers in the LP. And the Italians already could have been ahead if they had used their stronger pair team in the SP!

And people wonder why Europeans or people who are watching in Europe don't follow Team Event in Pyeong Chang. Time zone is extremely unfriendly for us with it being specifically fixed for North American audience (here Team Event starts at 2:00 AM) and when countries participating don't care it creates a discouraging combination for me. Enough to simply sleep through most of it even if you are figure skating geek and you have time to spare like I do right now (I have winter holidays right now).

So, who knew they were telling the story of a blind girl and he's explaining the world to her?

Lordy, I dislike those program descriptions. I don't want a briefing book on the storylines of programs. If the skating doesn't tell the story, then it's not good enough.

One day, we're going to hear Tara say, "She's portraying a two-foot skating, emotionless drone, completely devoid of any relationship to the music that surrounds her. Look at her blank face as she ignores the crescendo! Watch her pointlessly flap her arms as if she's a chicken hoping to take flight! Artistic genius!"

Weird that 21 points gap between Zagitova and Nagasu.
So Nagasu is the third woman to land a 3A at olympics after Ito and Asada, and the second to land 8 triples after Asada! Great achievments!

Didn't you see how low Bradie scored in SP?? Her PCS was all 7s. You can't compare Skate America to Olympics. It's different competitions.

Yes, but the short program here was almost two points higher than her Skate America short program. So, I think her long would likely have increased too by 3 or 4 points. Hence my guess, she could have gotten around 140. Honestly, while Bradie is not an exciting performer. She has transitions and that seems to be the main mark that judges use to decide PCS. Just like the other posters here... so happy for Mirai. Just sad for the dance teams, who unlike Bradie and Mirai are all truly top 5 in the world and , thus, in my opinion more deserving of this medal.

You meant Chloe? It is a first run. Anyway, snowboarding is small community, I mean at the top level. They all eat, sleep, compete together all year round. So they are more close knit family. Different setting make it easier to be more homey in snowboarding too.

Chloe is amazing child prodigy for some years now. She has lots of admirers and haters just like any other athletes. X games are far more popular and more money...I heard a lot more vicious stories there far worst than FS ( my cousin is the insider).

No, because of her ridiculous PCS, if it happens. She should be getting around 68/69. Her only 9+ score should be in transitions.

I agree with this. But, judges just give marks across the board in PCS. Which is why I am constantly commenting that a second panel is needed for PCS marks so that they can really accurately analyze all aspect of the skater's basic skating.

will this be the medal ceremony thread? does anybody know if there will be a live stream in for americans?

Some questionable judging choices aside I'm very happy with how the team event turned out overall and am thrilled for all the medalists!

So proud of Mirai and Adam! The Shibs were lovely as usual. However, now I'm kinda low key hoping Hubbell and Donohue sneak in to get that bronze medal in dance to make up for being left off the team event.

I think this is likely to happen. Honestly, though I think that almost any of the US teams could win bronze because with this technical panel it is likely that the team with the best levels will win. That could be any of the US ice dance teams. Or, the Russian team or W/P. I am pretty neutral about the result of that competition because I like different features of each team. (with the exception of the Russian team--- like them because they both seem extremely nice and hard working but I don't like their program)

Jamie Anderson ;)

Yeah...I’ve heard stories too. Not only on my trips to the mountains but my friends wife has worked with the US Ladies team for many years. Mostly good stuff though. It helps that they can survive in the sport without the competitions arguably much easier than skaters who need Olympic medals far more.

I'm just overwhelmed with happy that Mirai landed the 3A:hap85: Pls keep it up for the individual:pray:

The men were sad but Patrick deserved to win. I might have had Adam second but he doesn't have the edges or skill of Chan. Chan what the heck clean up those jumps and get the triple axel pronto. Show off that program!!!! The world deserves it if you don't. in fact both programs!!!!

Not sure about the strategies of some countries.

Japan could have had a chance for bronze with Uno skating both.
Chan hasn't fixed the axel in 84 years he's not going to start now.
Japan wouldn't have won bronze even if both Uno and Satoko had skated the FP (mathematically speaking)
