2018 Olympic Figure Skating Pairs FS

I'm emotionally utterly and completely drained. And Pairs is my least favorite event. I won't live through the next 1.5 weeks.
I hadn't been interested in pairs since Shen/Zhao left (although I had my eye in Sui and Han and their evolution over the years). Tonighy was a dream. Happy for Aliona and Bruno and I hope Sui and Han do keep on going 'cause their future is golden!

Meagan Duhamel hugging Aliona saying "I'm so proud of you". Class act through and through. So thrilled for them to have the bronze in addition to the gold.

S/H have silver and are hungry. And next time it's in China.

And Aliona has an Olympic gold freaking medal

This could not have worked out any better in my eyes.

I remember watching sadly after Aliona lost gold in 2010 and 2014. Last night, I thought Bruno had blown it for them. But tonight, Aliona was on another level of beauty. She and Bruno created not an olympic moment, but a moment of a lifetime. I feel so privileged to witness their free program.

I still can't get over Yu / Zhang still :slink:

I am happy that she finished (hopefully) healthy.

Wasn't he the partner in 2006 whose female partner had that disasterous fall - which was a blessing because it made them famous and sympathetic (though I never understood why - I mean I don't want anyone to get hurt but they made the mistake that caused that fall). The olympic spirit is to try harder and they did:) Yay! I hope he doesn't get the reputation of being a jinx.

I wouldn't be surprised if the lift score...did the tech controller know how close it was? Because Sui/Han have never EVER pretty much gotten a level 3 on their group 3 lift (which got perfect GOE)...and poof they go from winning by 0.03 to losing by 0.47.

Sorry don't mean to be a conspiracy theorist. S/M were amazing, best free skate of all time. On a 6.0 judging type scale Aliona are the clear winners. Just think the points added up weirdly...

Actually in 6.0, the Chinese would have won if the placements in each segment remained the same. I think Duhamel/Radford would have been 2nd in the LP under 6.0 though, which would have given Savchenko/Massot the Gold and the Chinese would have ended in 3rd.

Would not be surprised if there were tech panel shenanigans going on to ensure the Savchenko/Massot victory. It was the better performance on the night and the narrative most people wanted.

Epic! I've never watched such an incredible competition. So happy for Aljona and Bruno especially, but for the Chinese and Canadians also.

Honestly though, it would be even sweeter if they won their ogm on home ice. And at that point, Sui would not be coming off surgery/injury as well, so...

Don't kill me y'all, but Bruno is a gold medalist!! Aljona should get an extra medal just for that!

I know... I always say Aliona...I hardly ever mention Bruno because I only feel a connection to her over all these years of bronze medals. S/S were my favorites but I knew she needed someone that could throw her to the sky again.

There was a moment in backstage while Tarasova /Morozov waited for scores, when Aljona was already in tears and Meagan looked at her from the side with knowing smirk of pride like 'year, we did this' :).

Actually in 6.0, the Chinese would have won if the placements in each segment remained the same. I think D/R would have been 2nd in the LP under 6.0 though, which would have given S/M the Gold and the Chinese would have ended in 3rd.

Would not be surprised if there were tech panel shenanigans going on to ensure the S/M victory. It was the better performance on the night and the narrative most people wanted.

So... When can we expect there to not be shenanigans? Though weren't D/R second in the LP anyway?

Though at least the Chinese Team winning in Beijing after losing by less than half a point is a story that can't be beaten by anyone in the current field.

Stop. Just Please Stop. S/M deserved to win. Period.

Can anyone explain how/why Sui Han lost levels on the pair combo spin and last lift? Looks like those cost them the gold...

People on Tumblr are already declaring the results 'qwhite interesting' :sarcasm:

Congrats to all the medalists. So happy for Aliona and Bruno. Bruno had such a determined look on his face. Wish all the disciplines could be as exciting as that was! :clapper:

I haven’t posted in years but the Olympics brought me out of lurk mode. I am so elated for Aliona and Bruno, but esp Aliona. I wept for them yesterday and I wept for them today. I know all of the teams worked so hard, but it is just so satisfying to see someone like Aliona succeed....she never gave up and kept pushing herself, even at the “ripe old age” of 34. I came of age in the 90s, and I remember Katarina and Brian’s comebacks and I thought they were ancient at 28. This is incredible, Aliona is the Queen and I am so thrilled for her!

ok so i think s/m's gpf fs was transcendent and this one here really was not but man aren't they awesome for going clean? first time for aliona to have a clean oly fs! they really held it together. deserved score, honestly, i cannot even imagine the pressure. i'm happy for bruno (even more so than aliona tbh) because it must have been so scary to skate after what happened in sp. just one mistake and you're off the podium, never mind gold, probably...

d/r - you know what? they skated 4 programs in a row - almost clean. whatever you think of their style... they are superhuman. congratulations! deserved medal!

sui/han - they are the best ever. their smoothness is unrivaled as are their lines, mutual understanding and elegance of every motion. they are like two patrick chans skating at the same time. even if they never get an oly gold they are better than aliona, shen/zhao, pang/tong and everybody else. the GOAT. their sp this season is a masterpiece but they have had so many better programs than the derivative turandot lp... also they are not shoma uno, this bombastic, super extroverted stuff is not for them. they need to be more normal and skating for themselves, not the audience - everything introverted is much more 'them' than flailing arms and screaming tenors in the background. with the mistakes, they gor very generous scores today.

t/m - didn't watch that atrocity of a program. only the slow-mo elements after they finished and were waiting for their scores... just find better programs already. seriously. you do deserve better than all this schlock you have been given for all these years.

but even though many delivered, i'm still FUMING. outraged, so angry - because never in a million years should have vale and ondrej lost to that wobbly, mistake-laden, slow french lp - not with that squicky clean performance that they sold the hell out of! i demand JUSTICE FOR M/H!

Just arrived here and read the results. Sad for Sui/Han. Could someone please tell me did Sui/Han lose because of 'Turandot'? I wish so much Sui/Han has skated something their 'own', like 'Bridge over troubled waters', instead of this so called 'honour' to their coaches' program, etc. I couldn't get into Turandot throughout the entire season no matter how well they skated it. It just made Sui look 'old' with the period costume and the choreographic movements look archaic for their young faces. I didn't want to make negative comments in the forum but never have a good feeling on 'Turandot'. The pressure to honor your coaches by skating better and all that stuff can't help. In 4 years, Sui/Han please do something your own.
