2018 Olympic Figure Skating Pairs FS

And it looked like a triple, it was quality !

I would not get ahead of myself with that delight over the quality of this element. It was mostly the super important moment that made us excited. I've already seen better quads from Meagan / Eric too in the past but admittedly that was perhaps the best this season of them.

Maybe I am little bit cranky but that looked like a triple thing comes from the fact that they kinda run around & slightly circumvent first revolution. It's allowed but there's less rotation from the point when Meagan is away from Eric than if you compare with Quad Throw Salchow of let's say Zhang / Zhang, Trent / Wise, Kavaguti / Smirnov or even James / Cipres (these two are yet to land not double footed one though). Also less height / distance & flow (compared to those cleanly landed attempts). Also visible deceleration towards and telegraphic to it does not help to give great impression.

But they have the biggest amount of landed 4S throw in FS history for certain and yes ... this was a historical feat too. I've seen them landing throw Quadruple... Lutz in training footage.

Looking at the standings again: 1) Cheers to Canada!!! All three teams brought it!! 2) J/C and M/H 5 and 6--who would have guessed that at the beginning of the quad?? 3) It was amazing to watch a competition where there were no weak links. I mean I did not cringe during lifts in pairs in the IJS era! That's an accomplishment!!

Bravo to all the skaters for bringing it.

Yay! Applause.

Bruno and Aliona were awesome - moreso Aliona because the quality of the skating is better than Bruno. Well done. A great program.

Sui and Han my heart breaks ; yes I think there are some issues about hte socring on the spin and lift and the overmarked sp of S and M but really both teams were wonderful

Duhamel andRAdford - they WON bronze and good on them.

I really have to say that I know we probably don't mean but there seemed such hatred almost to Megan and Eric and T and M and or their programs. We forget it seems these are real people with moms and dads. Lest we forget Evgenia. It all worked out for Alion and she worked hard and she strategized - she searched and hunted for her partner, she switched country and she persevered. But as hard as she worked and strategized in her case with switching nations there is a bit of luck. We must think of Sui and Han and I remembered another pair team Kavaguti and Smirnov who could have been the S and M team. Life is cruel and sometimes it is about timing. Aliona has a right to celebrate but oh the humanity.

I really hope though the hatred (and youu can say it was the program) but it was targetted at the athletes on this forum stops. I just feel for them as much as I too hated their program.

We all will advocate for our faves and sometimes we go a little too far (almost leading to threats0 but we should applaud what wonderful skating. yes, good arguments can be made that SB should be much higher, that the french were overmarked , that T and M's programs suck and the list goes on - but these people have real lives and hearts.

I am too sensitive because I find it kind of sad to see Aliona so happy but Evgenia and the Chinese in pain. Just a different judge could have made the difference. IN the end this was wonderful skating.

Now I am really cheering for the underdogs/almost hated skaters - though I have no faith in Patrick Chan I am hoping he skates two clean 3A/quad filled programs. I am sending positive thoughts to Evgenia in the ladies and Virtue and Moir - skaters who seem to have been hated on this forum for lack of words.

I wish we could give all the skates gold medals.

Some more people to thank and appreciate in this stellar Olympic pairs event:

- Congratulations to James / Cipres for their Top 5 finish at the Olympics!

- Congratulations to Christopher Dean for his masterful choreography for Savchenko / Massot!

- Congratulations to Marchei / Hotarek for a brilliant and clean free skate to earn them a Top 6 finish!

- Congratulations to Ryom / Kim for representing North Korea well at this Olympic Games!

Backstage

My single favourite moment of the entire competition happened on the NBC broadcast, where the cameras were seated where S/M, D/R and S/H were just sitting. When it sunk in that Aljona and Bruno won, the commentators went silent, the camera didn't move. Everyone was hugging and congratulating. Bruno was beside himself with joy. Meagan reaches over and holds him to her chest, says "YOU GUYS DID IT!!" and then she comes over to Aljona and holds her for a long time and says simply, "I am so proud of you!" while Aljona was overcome and overwhelmed that she is finally Olympic champion, and just sobs joyously. It's clear that these people have respected each other for a very long time and are good friends. Thankfully Johnny and Tara (and Terry) just said nothing and watched them, and let that scene backstage just play itself out. I think everyone was thrilled to be on that podium. I cried a bit too, I'm over the moon for her.

Also, Liam came over just before the medal ceremony and gives Aljona a long, lingering kiss. It was sexy.

P.S. you just know S/H are thinking, "in 2022, WE will be champions!!"

What did your commentators say about Aljona/Bruno? I just watched the German ESP so I'm interested in commentary from around the World.

I watched Estonian commentary today, because the local channel was the only one showing live. And well, they did love it, but kept saying stuff during the performance like "maybe they should put that quad in there", which made me facepalm so hard.

I wonder if Aljona will retire for good. And if so, what will Bruno do??? Aljona is also very lucky to find Bruno after Sochi. Without a good partner, the team goes nowhere; a good man in a pair is everything; it is even more remarkable that somehow Bruno gets his German citizenship in time and is willing to represent Germany. So even without Gold, they have already accomplished so much.

Before winning OGM I heard they had plans to stay for 1 more year, but now I'm not sure and who can blame them. I'm not sure Bruno could pull of "an Aljona" and I hear he has health problems as well. I would like to see more of them though.

I also loved when Liam hugged Bruno and shouted "you are a legend!" It was funny

There is only one thing that saddened me: Tarasova bursting into tears in the K&C when she realized they had missed the podium. The cameras thankfully cut away very quickly after. As much as I disliked Candyman, she and Vlad are a gorgeous pair and this was a heartbreaking experience. They will rebound and be brilliant in 2022.

One thing to keep in mind: they missed the individual medal this time, but they should be very proud of their team medal! They delivered in that event.

I think I just missed that!! Will replay!!!

(What is Robin Szolkowy thinking at this moment??)

I try my best to understand both sides of an issue and I hate when folks go after athletes on twitter, etc. However, I see nothing to compromise about here. I didn't like T/M's program and packaging this year. That's not going to change even after tonight. I've criticized Moser and their team and T/M for making these choices. There's nothing wrong with that. Let's not go overboard on this "hatred" stuff. I'm not losing any sleep over Candyman, but if we're comparing and contrasting amongst competitors and stating our opinions on GS I see no issue.

When T/M get better packaging I'll be cheering hard for them. The skating skills and the elements are there. I just think they need to up their game. I roast my favorites for bad choices too.

There were plenty of people hating on their SP, I had to leave the thread it was making me so angry.

T/M are damned if they do and damned if they don't - Classical programs = the same old boring stuff that turns audiences off

Something new and different (their SP and FP last year , Candyman) = ridiculous idiots who wouldn't know class if it slapped them in the face.

I just wish people wouldn't pretend they're trying to "save" T/M from themselves. They clearly don't like their style whatever it is, so just ignore them instead of insulting them.

Yes, well I think schadenfruede is bad karma. And while I'm sorry for them personally (you know, as people with hearts and dreams and feelings and hopes and aspirations), I think SarahSynchro is right: couple a completely mismatched program with nervous mistakes and you get bad results.

Now me? I'm a greedy sort. I want EVERYONE to skate well because it's just so much more entertaining that way. And I love to be entertained. Even if it turns out to be a camp masterpiece. Maybe especially then! LOL!

WOW !!! the gold for Aljona/Bruno is TOTALLY DESERVED, even if gained just by an half point :thank:

I was cheering for Sui/Han for the gold and happy by the italian pairs result, before the last group begin to skate, but after that program… DAMN, i was just crying rivers for Aljona :sad21:  :sad4:

I’m also so happy for Duhamel/Radford. Before the competition this bronze seamed to me more like a dream, and also because of that awful candyman

What a splendid competition we have see, WOW !!! :hap93:

According to German commentator Daniel Weiss Aljona has said she wants to continue for two more years but hasn't convinced Bruno yet to go on.

Lets not be too sad and pretend there is no tomorrow or no next time. Aliona proved it to us that there is ALWAYS next time. The key is to keep believing and keep fighting. The moment where there is no tomorrow will be the moment the Sun engulfs the Earth.
