2018 Olympic Figure Skating Pairs FS

Are people seriously complaining about the judging? It seems like some people just can't live without conspiracy. The right performance won in the SP and the same happened in FS. This was very well judged event.

Finally, Aljonna got what she wanted. I hope that inspires the grannies to stick around: Vanessa, Valentina, Ksenia show them.

Of course Pang/ Tong wouldn't say anything. Any other country commentator of their own skaters losing on that oh so convenient margin of win for the Germans would have said something. They're not egoistic like the Americans commentators who tear down their opponents no matter what. Sui/ Han had a 6 pts margin after SP over them and if it weren't for politics it would have been enough to keep them the gold. It's no accident that the Germans marginally won the gold.
I think we agree that Johnny and tara are the worst commentators out there, but just you know, German Eurosport was very supportive of Sui/Han after the SP and today in the FS, too. They said they are a wonderful pair and would have deserved the gold just as much as Aliona and Bruno.

Look, I'm heartbroken for Sui/Han - they are fantastic skaters and you are entitled to your opinion about this, but I don't think politics were the main reason for the result.

Convenient how the judging is done so that S/M just BARELY got the gold. After that short, even with Sui/Han's errors, I would have given it to S/H...

S/H had 4 clear mistakes, 2 level issues and 2 jump errors in the free where the pcs has 2x the value. I'm not sure it should have been as close as it was.

So S/M's off-sync spin wasn't even reviewed? and got positive GOE?
their performance was a bit off of each other today

but how do they get WRs wherever they go?

Where does off sync get reviewed, its not a level issue. If you want to complain, complain about the short and the goe on the germans sbs jumps, the rules were broken by some judges. The free is clear.

Sync isn't a level. It is a GOE. I can't say why they gave them positive GOE's because I don't remember what spin you are referring to but there are many different things that can lead to positive GOE. I have to say the pair spins in general are pretty ugly. S/M's were definitely better than most of the pairs.

Is Robin signing off on Candyman evidence that he wanted Aliona to get that gold after all?

It was very evident the whole season that Russians are pushing the Germans for the gold. In every Russian TV commentary TAT could not stop talking about Aljonna's hardship and how she deserves to win it in Korea. I knew there was something going on. All she needed to do is to skate clean and Chinese would not have a chance unless they do something extraordinary which clearly did not happen here. T/M had never had a chance at that gold unless other badly bombed. They were hoping for the bronze and in the end got too much hope after SP and got buried quickly even with a little friendlier judging panel than in the SP.

I agree. I think that the order that the skaters skated in definitely influenced the results. For instance, Valentina and the 2nd Canadian pair would have gotten higher points if they skated later. But, this happens in every competition and its not purposeful it is just once the judges give out higher PCS scores to one team they are more apt to give it to others. Other than that, well judged event. It was clear the judges gave the highest scores to the teams that had the cleanest best performed programs. That is all. Which is the way an event should be judged.

I hate to admit it BUT I am kinda going to miss the unsinkable "teflon" Meagan. I knew she would be on that podium. The way she was grinning throughout the entire performance after she landed the last throw was very funny but endearing. Such an Olympic moment.

Today’s podium shows it is not old at all. Aliona, Megan, and Eric are all in their thirties. Anyway, I don’t think criticizing a program is in anyway inappropriate. It wasn’t just that they chose this song. It is that they were never committed to the performance because it did not suit them.

Anyway, it was not the program that lost them a medal. It was their errors. You can’t blame others for that. They have to learn how to handle their nerves.

In addition, I have seen the young Russian pairs and I was not impressed. None of them are close to T/M. They should be fine for four more years. ( barring injury)

I think we can agree that Aliona, Megan and Eric are unusual, pairs skating as a whole isn't full of people in their late twenties to early/mid-thirties.

I'm not saying that any of the pairs who got medals today didn't deserve them, they totally did. I just find it awful that people would wish a pair not to get on the podium purely because of their music choice, especially when that pair is good enough that the only way it could happen (as we saw) is if they made multiple mistakes. If you really supported a team or at the very least respected them as competitors which these people claim to do they'd never write such things.

I highly doubt that T/M missed the podium because of that god awful music. They lost TES and the protocols show it.

As a casual once every 4-year Olympic viewer as far as pairs are concerned, please help me to understand this.

I get this passage from Bruno Massot's wiki.

Wow, I didn't know that this is actually a thing in pairs. Does Bruno need to pay that amount himself or the German would pay this release fee? Why is there a release fee anyway?

(I could buy a lifetime supply of Laduree macarons with that money.)

FFSG invested in Bruno (which you can see now, why they did), so they would not let him go without money. The German fed payed I think ?

Same thing happenned with Tiffany Zagorski.

The other day (I don't remember when) on TV, Philippe Candeloro was talking about how this could be a thing, just like in football every year. Pay to release athletes, this could be a market where we could invest. Except that skaters do not make money from this and I personally don't like that idea. However what can you do when you invest on a skater, it could be normal to ask for fees... FFSG could take some advice from the German fed if they want to be successful again. Translation : support your skaters, France. We missed on having potential skaters and talents because it's not well regulated. (Sorry, my rant :drama:)

Hello, where can I find videos of the flower ceremony ? Also the part after T/M skated and everyone hugged in the green room.

Yes I know, but people are happy they missed the podium purely based on their music. Everywhere I looked before this event I saw "I pray that Candyman won't be OGM!" "OMG, Candyman on the podium would be a travesty" "Pairs skating and the Olympics will be ruined if T/M get on the podium".

At their best T/M are able to podium, so basically these people were wishing for them to make mistakes, and they did.

Now they're claiming that T/M are "better" than that program, as if it's a certainty they'll a) Get to 2022 and b) get on the podium if they do.

Maybe they will, but maybe they won't and then it won't matter (in terms of winning an Olympics) if they skate to whatever 'wonderful' programs they "should" be doing (although I'm at a loss to what programs that could be, because again, when T/M have skated to classic music people have derided them for being "bland" and "boring", so who even knows what people want).

This is an extremely nationalistic and biased comment. Really, not necessary. You should really be ashamed of saying that. The American commentators actually had many lovely things to say about Sui/Han and S/M today. They also constantly praise the Russian girls who will undoutably beat the American skaters. (and I hate Johnny/ Tara but today they weren't bad). I understand that your favorites lost but I am sure that with time you can be less upset about this decision. The end result was all about execution of elements. S/M elements were pristine today. Absolutely, lovely. Sui/Han have skated better many times and there were small little issues throughout their program in addition to the jumps. They are amazing but this was not their best skate. I , also, honestly feel that their free program this year (while great) did not have the same stunning impact as last years program. So, I don't see that it was choreographically superior to the Germans. I think you should calm down before continuing to comment. Anyway, what kind of crazy complex math do you think the judges did to all magically hand the gold to S/M by .5 points. That is realitically not possible to plan in such a short amount of time. All they do is enter numbers on a screen between -3 to 3 for GOE and numbers for PCS and they are not allowed to speak with one another.

I think you need to look up what nationalistic mean and it doesn't means supporting your favourite skaters. It's well known that the Americans commentators are way more egoistic just listen to their commentary for 2010 men fs. They had nothing bad to say today because their skaters weren't even in the mix. If the American girls were more competitive, they'll ramp on about Russian backloading and stuff. There's practically over 4 mins between end of skate to the announcement. How is that a short amount of time? And are you really naïve to think that the judging is as simple as that?

Personally, I think criticism is fine. Constructive criticism is what happens when you see people with amazing talent like T/M and you think that something they are doing is ruining their chances of success. Now, are some people just criticial for the sake of being mean. Yes, of course. But, usually that is not the case. It is just how they feel about a team or a program. I hated their program but was crushed when they did not perform well. I don't think that performance made anyone happy even if I was extremely glad that it resulted in the three pairs whose programs I liked better being on the podium. Seeing them fail was crushing.

I have to point out factual errors (sorry, I know it is not a quality people like) so I do need to point out that most successful pairs teams are actually older
2018 S/M 34/29
2014 V/T- 27/31
2010 Shen/ Zhao 31/36
2006 Totmianina/ Marinin 24/28

The gold medals have not been going to the teenagers in pairs skating. Pairs skating takes time to perfect. I am sure T/M will be even better in 4 years. Singles skating does favor the young.
