Keep in mind that Nathan is less than 3 points out of the top 10 and less than 8 points out of the final group. When you consider how wildly ranging the scores in the LP can in the men's competition, anything can happen!

Yet, I don't think he will get a medal and I'm preparing myself for the worst. We will see after the 1st jumping pass. I say this as a Nathan fan. :sad21:

I like your numbers. I didn't think of it that way although I knew he was close to the skaters in Adam's group and 8 points from Chan. Let's hope Rafe pointed that out to him. I also hope he has the skate of his life so that he leaves Korea with positive feelings. I watched the FS practices of his group and the group that follow an hour or so ago (NBC's live feed). He was making most of his jump and had a triple axel that really looked pretty. He did seem to hold his lower back a bit while he was skating around, so I hope he's OK. Adam Rippon had a wonderful practice and even cut it short. His jumps were gorgeous. Vincent had a lot of energy, and worked a lot on his jumps. He seemed confident. Sending good vibes to all of our guys.

I'd be surprised if the podium didn't come from the top 4 SP finishers. Now that Boyang and Yuzu are healthy, it's hard to see any 2 of that group of 4 melting down enough to get Nathan on the podium.

Whatever your beverage tonight/ this morning, have a small sip whenever:
- you want to tell your announcer "be quiet"
- your announcer says "He wants to do better"
- your announcer says "Olympic ice"
- the camera focuses on the top of their heads during spins
- you have to blink repeatedly and refocus on the skater when they go to an overhead shot and the glare of the arena light bar is reflected on the ice
-when the camera zooms in on the.. ahem, 'lower torso' area ...during a spin/ spiral/ lift.
- when the camera focuses on the skaters face while their body is doing something much more interesting.

I agree with everything GGFan said regarding Nathan Chen. One aspect of the (print) media hype around Chen that always annoyed me was the lack of mention of his GOEs. If Chen lands his 3A, he gets BV, whereas Hanyu is going to land his 3A and with +3 GOE. Though after Chen’s short, everyone is suddenly a critic and has realized that GOEs exist, Chen’s jumps have far more obvious takeoffs, etc., to the point of swinging toward and hitting yet another (ignorance-induced) extreme. Terrible commentary and even worse “explainers” from legitimate news outlets helped kill my interest in figure skating, honestly.

Orser seemed pleased with Hanyu’s warmup, as did Hanyu himself, though after last night, I’m fairly certain he’s going to skate the lights out. “How do you feel about your chances at winning the gold?” “I don’t even care. I’m doing me.” — if that’s the attitude he has going into the free skate, this is going to good.

I noticed this in the Ladies Team SP, where Mirai hit 8 triples but finished well behind Alina technically. Those GOEs add up quick, especially on the non-jump elements. There aren't any throwaway elements any more, and Yuzuru gets a ton of points on jumping and non jumping elements.

I know!! I tried to tell people that even though Nathan lands harder jumps than Javier and Yuzuru but he never gets +3 GOEs on his jumps. He has no flow coming out of his jumps, always awkward landing.. Shoma's 4toes and 3axels get better GOEs than Nathan's.

I don't think he needs 5 quads either.. I got the info from Nikkansports, a Japanese sports newspaper.
