2018 Olympic Figure Skating Ladies FS

This is a serious question and I am trying really hard to not sound like I am trashing Karen but how is it possible to have boot problems for this long? I get having an issue with a set of boots or two because the material (leather or alternate) doesn't set correctly or gets worn down quickly but this much seems like she isn't taking care of her boots. All of these skaters have custom made boots so I genuinely don't understand. I get something happening (like Mirai at Nationals last year) but with Karen, it's is a continuation of a story.

Can somebody, maybe somebody who has been a skater, can explain how this is still possible for Karen? Didn't she go through like 4 different brands f to find the best skate and a ton of different boots? I'm trying really hard to not be snarky because I really adore Karen but I honestly don't understand. Can somebody please explain? Between illness, boot problems, costume problems, program problems, etc. I just don't understand Karen sometimes.

I can't believe Masha is going first in the second to last group. :slink:

I saw Nathan Chen in the second flight at warm up. Now that was actually a “buzza-WHA” moment, though at least it meant we got to see Hanyu practice.

How is the mood of the tech panel? Are they ready to give deserved carrots or are they holding back like in the sp?

We aren’t being broadcast to the average viewer and expected to walk them through both the basics of the sport and its judging while also highlighting what a given skater does well, their strengths and weaknesses, and also not talk over the entire performance.

I do think some of the cattiness in the forums can be uncalled for us well but we do have more freedom to be more openly critical. I don't mind some tongue-in-cheek ribbing and I will gladly mock ugly costumes.

Did anybody else see Karen's instagram story? She's having boot problems again?!

I believe it's time for the invention of a new type of skate, one that doesn't involve boots, for Karen. Skate sandals, skate slippers, anything but a boot. If I were her, I'd be wary of even buying winter boots. Poor girl.

I mean, the only thing I can think of is that her technique is putting strain on the boots where they're weakest? I genuinely have no clue, though.

I would understand that but seeing how zhenya and Alina jump and jump and you never hear about stuff like this from them? Just my opinion...

That's why I said the "Plus the trouble finding a good pair."

If there's issues with the fit/feel in the first place, she might be wearing parts down faster than normal after the repetitions.

One time I was walking on a path by a lake and came upon a whole flock of geese. They were lined up in rows on both sides of the pathway. I had to walk through this goose gauntlet. Scariest moment of my life. I was certain I would be pecked to death. But they just watched me.

We have geese problems here. One person I know went to buy coffee and doughnuts for the office, was walking to her car, and got mobbed by them. They actually squawk-bit her on the butt. [emoji23][emoji23][emoji23]

Not sure I agree. It’s become part of the culture. Not sure why we should get a pass for being part of it.

I sort of agree with you. But, unlike us, journalists for an international stage are, or should be, trained to keep their commentary unbiased and professional.

I don't like reading the extremes some people go to bash either, but it's still unlikely that the athletes would ever come to GS ever. The NBC broadcast is there for everyone to watch, and it also shades the viewpoint of the casual viewer. Their biased, disrespectful commentary normalizes the viewers' own not-so-savoury behaviour towards athletes.

Interestingly enough I believe Nathan Chen has also had boot problems for aaaagesss.

Maybe it's a Chen thing,
